K-r all ISO performance

easily useable 12,800 and even 25,600 isn't too bad.

Are these DNG or in-camera jpegs?

Are these 100% crops ?

This is awesome, a 25,600 that you can use ... holy crap :- )

If they are JPEG out of the camera, it's a great achievement for an APS-C camera.

I'd be perfectly happy to use the camera at 6400iso during a wedding ceremony. While it does have less rez than my K20D or Canon 7D, it's more than good enough for a good chunk of wedding work in a small, light body! And I thought my wife's K-x was good!

I would say around 1 stop improvement over the K-X. So we should be on pair with the D700 now?
Despite the lower resolution compared to my Canon 7D, the noise appears as though it could be better than the 7D....which is already good. I was never impressed with my K20D in terms of noise....but the K-x has always been forgiving.

Which is not a bad thing at all considering how clean the K-x output is.

this ISO is not exactly stellar on D700 either

common sense is anything but common

I'd say the top, useable iso is really 6400. With 6400, I see a decent 8x10 print....11x14 with the slightest bit of NR is LR3.2

In all honesty, even at a wedding ceremony in a dark church, with an f2.8 zoom and SR, iso 3200 is about all I ever need. If I need more, than f2 or 1.4 glass solves the problem. A Sigma 30 f1.4 at 3200 can by used in a DARK church.

Really, 99% of what most people use is between 100-800.

I find ISO 6400 on my D700 brings me through probably 98% of all shooting situations I'm in, ISO 3200 probably through 85%. If the K-r can get within a stop of the D700, it means I could use a ~$700 (street) K-r for 85+% of the times I'd use a D700 to get good high-iso performance - It's a pretty great achievement for aps-c if true.

The K-r looks very good to me

This is clean and I can't wait to see the next generation FF sensors; should be super clean up to ISO 6,400.

Yes, ISO 3,200 and fast f/2,0 glass can handle almost everything - almost a perfect wedding machine, although I would like to see a model with a very silent shutter (K-5).

By and large however, APS-C seems to be at a point where it can pretty much match the current FFs high Iso performance. The canon 7D gave us a taste of it last year and is now confirmed by what we see. This is good news, as my shooting conditions often bring me over 800 ISO.

I'll have to see how the K5 is in hand. I've been building up more Pentax gear for weddings and less Canon gear. If the K5 can handle 3200+ very well, and has a responsive AF and metering system, maybe my 7D will be sold!

Clean of noise, but also clean of detail. It would be great for a snapshot, but I certainly wouldn't use that for something like a wedding, or for any other type of serious picture.

But having said that, who knows what processing has been applied, whether the picture was in sharp focus to begin with, etc.

Where are these pictures coming from, by the way? How are people getting their hands on the K-r already?
