Having just bought a WB2000 yesterday and looking forward to exploring all the features, I thought I would take my time and understand them one by one.

Today I spent time during lunch walkabout snapping pictures with and without Smart Range turned on.

I walked out of the house, set the camera to ISO 80 (everything else at default) and started my snap day.

For some reason, once Smart Range turned on, it seemed like the picture got cropped a little (I recall I may have moved slightly)

The ISO also got bumped to 100 by the camera.

From the intial attempt, I would say parts of the exposure looked slightly washed out.

The camera also alerted me at some shots saying 'Smart Range not applied due to camera shake'

However, upon image review the picture looked like Smart Range had indeed been applied (presumably? a wrong/inappropriate system message?)

Upon further experimentation, I realised that the HDR result was also dependent on the metering settings, and

I left the default metering setting (multi) alone and pointed the camera at different spots (I aimed for a slightly darker exposure) and obtained the following result:

The camera again bumped the ISO from 80 to 100 and appeared to crop the image slightly (observe the cutoff point of the building on the right)

There'll likely different folks either preferring the former, more contrasty exposure, or the HDR result (I thought it was slightly closer to how my eyes were seeing the scene, especially the clouds)

Again, with Smart Range turned on, the camera
  • auto bumped the ISO from 80 to 100
  • cropped the image slightly (perhaps to produce a seamless HDR image with no ghosting/shake)
  • occasionally reported 'Smart Range not applied due to camera shake' yet still produced the HDR images.

For these photos, I switched to ISO 200. The camera left it alone when Smart Range kicked in.

Based on my day one findings, the Smart Range is a great and usable feature for some photo ideas.

My only gripe is needing to go into a 2nd-level menu in order to toggle it
(MENU -> Photo -> Smart Range)

I'm very satisfied with the camera's image quality thus far, its a huge bump up from my previous Samsung NV24HD, which has given me a number of memorable snapshots although it had very poor ISO performance.

Those of you reading, hope you found this useful, I'll be sharing more findings as I explore the other features day by day.

Thanks for your though testing report on HDR mode in multiple posts. Your pictures look very nice in general.

thanks jinwon & RipnBurn!

if you guys have the camera, do post up your photos camera performance/features as well (lens & image quality, ISO performance, white balance, photo styles, smart filters)

More photos can't hurt! Will also cross post my earlier photos to the wb2000/tl350 flickr user group as well :)

Nice photos guys!

I like the HDR mode a lot, because it lets you preserve the highlights and brighten up the shadows. It only lacks a bit of contrast which you can add in camera using "Image Adjust" or later on a simple curve in Photoshop.

Your pictures are very nice. Would you please make a test for HD video?
Thanks.

Hi,

I do have the Samsung WB2000, and have had it for a few days. I have started a blog to review the camera ( http://more4u2c.wordpress.com ) and hopefully help someone in the same situation that I was myself in just a few days ago - that is NOT having a WB2000. It is a real little supercamera but with its shortcommings!
I would be glad to answer any questions about the camera here in the forum.

I have one question concerning the "Smart range" - my WB2000 misses out 8 times out of ten - complaining that it can not process the pictures due to camera shake - even on a tripod!

ONE of my "Smart range"-pictures turned out like this! And I did NOT shake the camera!

Hardware problem with my sample do you think?

Sfenn

I had the same problem with the smart range setting. I thought it had to do with things moving in the scene like leaves or waves on the water.

I have had the same problem with the camera refusing to process for HDR even with stil life pictures indoors. The sample picture was taken at near no wind at all.

I am glad for your responses as I get more and more convinced that I have a hardware/firmware problem in the camera.

I have updated the firmware to the latest I found: 8261.

I use SDHC - the fastest Class 10.

Also if you look at my picture a few posts back it looks very vierd - with two copies of the boat ... this is the way the picture came out of the camera - I have just scaled it down a little.

hi sfenn,

most of the smart range photos i've taken thus far had little or no ghosting, including moving cars and people.

the SDHC card i'm using was given as a freebie with the deal, its a Class 4 16GB. shooting so far without any problems with it including video.

i do recall a fellow forumer who praised the wb2000 as having relatively minor 'ghosting' as compared to other cameras with similar built-in HDR feature.

from your sample picture, it seems to look like your camera might be a defective set. not sure if its firmware or hardware related though.

if you could, please post up more pictures (perhaps 5 or more) so we can check it out, and perhaps look at the settings too

cheers

Would you say that it is possible for you to have most pictures come out properly (HDR) when you hold the camera in your hand?
Ratio? Mine is like close to 10:1 - that is 9 failures for each good one.
