Planing a 2 week trip to Colorado, with specifics of Rocky Mtn Park, Pikes Peak, Georgetown RR, and much more. But....would like to travel light, yet have the best gear for the job. Here's what I have.

Canon T1i and Canon 18-55IS, 50 1.8, 28-135IS, 70-300IS and Sigma 50mm 2.8 Macro. And also: Canon SX20 IS, and Canon A650IS. So what's the least I can get by with and still get things covered well?
Thanks for your feedback.

if travel light is really your priorityl, understandably, then SX20 is going to be sufficient. since all your lens are more or less mid-core, IQ difference is not going to be significant, but wieght and flexibility is. just make sure you use flash at night.

It looks like to me you don't have enough! :)

Tripod... flash... computer... external hard drive for back up.

You need two cameras in case one takes a dump. Leave the 50 1.8 and the 28-135 and Sigma Macro at home... unless you really feel a need for the macro. That gives you 18 to 300 and you don't need anything between 55-70. (your feet can zoom that range if really needed.)

Only you know how light you need to get... take it if you can.

Good suggestions. But I'd need one of the 50s for lower light. Probably wouldn't need the "macro" feature, though. So, maybe include the 50 1.8?

Cutting from 5 lenses to 3 is good. Maybe could include one of the P&Ss then for any super quick, light, well lit situations, too. I find both of them to be capable cameras (for me, anyway).

Why even own a dslr if you don't use it for this kind of trip?

IQ will be much superior with the T1i.I'd take all the lenses with me and use the 1 or 2 appropriate for that day.

Come on, if you are going to be serious about landscape pictures you NEED a tripod.

Anyway, I would take the 18-55IS and 70-300IS to cover things nicely. If you want you could also take one of the canon P&S cameras for macro and/or lower light pictures needing flash.

I would take a polarizing filter and an ND filter too.

While you are there, say hello to Continental Falls, Hanging Lake, Seven Falls, the Garden of the Gods, Royal Gorge, and Cave of the Winds. (Pictures in that order.) I had a great time there in 2008. Stayed in a Breckenridge timeshare.

I agree with citylights unless you are looking for a recomendation for adding something to your lens collection then I would say a 10-20 lens.

I took a course in art last winter. I learnt the difference between a fine oil painting, and a mechanical thing, like a photograph. The photograph shows only the reality. The painting shows not only the reality, but the dream behind it.

Why even own the SX20 is you dont use it where its advantage is the most obvious?

and to answer the question, owing an SLR can mean shooting portrait, sports, wildlife marco, not limited to travelling. I thought it would be rather obvious for most people.

though if there were argumentative, they may still argue the obvious.

Yeah,you're right.No reason to even own a dslr when a P&S can "replace" it.......lol.

Of course,I'd rather have great pictures from a great trip rather than "OK" P&S pictures. But this is an slr forum."I thought it would be rather obvious for most people".

I'll second that.If you can get your hands on an UWA lens, take it.It likely will be used a ton.

Why is it so hard for you to compute that OP has a SX20, and he wants to travel light.

and what SLR forum got to do with this? OP told us he has SX20. read before you write.

Folks,

I'm just trying to NOT take everything that I own on this trip. It's not totally a photo-trip, though every effort will be made to take lots of pictures. Nevertheless, there is an itinerary to follow. So i can't be to all those "tasty" scenic wonder spots early in the morning or at night. And I don't have any back-up plans if the weather happens to turn ugly on me. Many will be visited during that less-than-great mid-day sun time. In other words, this is going to be a rather touristy visit to Denver and sourrounds, and I'll need to take what I can, when I can, with what I have(your suggestions).
Maybe this explanation might help in your assisting me.

Not a thing other than EXACTLY what the OP said:

Do you seriously think he's not intending to take his dslr?

Why all the animosity whenever anyone disagrees with you .You need to chill out. This is a camera forum, not life and death.

i think my travellings are generally of the same nature, travel + have fun first, photography second. I almost never bring SLR with me when i travel, because of the few times i did take it, i found that, A, it is too much bulk to carry and walk all day and it makes you look like a tourist (though u really are one), B, since i never bring tripod along, low light scenery shots often dont come out good, C, there are hardly ever any action (moving objects) to justify SLR. So basically the baggage of SLR has never justified itself as far as travelling goes.

These days I just bring a compact, and it only does 24-60mm, but I have never felt i missed a shot.

And since I am just a hobbyist, i dont make money with my photos, i really see no reason to have a "back up camera", so I never bring one, if my camera needed a back up, then i probably need a back up bag, back up car, back up phone etc...

I do bring more than one memory card and battery though.

Our photo club met for lunch today and I posed your question. We had a low turnout as school just started.I asked that they not "add lenses" to the mix.

Results:
3 members said:T1i +18-55IS only
7 members said:T1i +18-55 IS + 70-300 IS
1 member said :T1i + 18-55 +70-300 + 50 1.8

Nobody suggested a P&S unless you are treating this a vacation first and foremost, with little picture taking interest.

This is an experienced group of pros and really good amateur photographers. For bad weather, take some zip-lock bags!

Fred,

I want to thank you for bothering to bring it up to your group. I got 11 quick opinions in one foul swoop. Much appreicated. Thanks again.

No problem.Sometimes we get in a rut (a lot of high-end equipment.....talked about ad nauseum). But many of us have a mix of equipment....some kit lenses,mid-range,L....same with bodies,etc....It was a welcome diversion for most of us from the "pro talk".And I thought the results were interesting.

Fred,

You might want to relay to the group that I'm strongly considering the suggestion/advice of the lone "1" voter.....the option including the 50 1.8 lens.
Basically for interiors, museums, etc.....that sort of thing.

I took a trip to the Michigan Upper Peninsula and took a DSLR with something like a 18-55, and 50...along with a supper zoom P&S. The DSLR was used for WIDE and the 50 for DARKER, and the Panasonic FZ30(at the time) for everything else. Not a bad combo at all for it's purposes. I don't recall being limited, or missing any important shots, becasue of any gear left behind. Everything (lenses)had it's own responsibility. No real decisions had to be made as to what to grab. I REALLY like that sort of feeling.

you need to chill out fred, you need to let it go and stop that obsession of trying to argue with me.

OP asks a question, i give my take, it is simple as that. somehow to you it becomes a fight, and I need "others on my side" to win.

Grow up.
