Hi has anyone still got and use the F717 i'm thinking of getting mine out again see how it holds up to the moden stuff

As a snap shooter, I haven't found a worthy enough replacement. Well, I finally, recently, "upgraded" to a used F828, but I won't get rid of the trusty 707. Makes a great backup now, and batteries, flash etc, are interchangeable.

It's not as bulky as the 828, yet still can mount an external flash, hologram assist, bright lens, swivel body... and I'm used to it, like a broken in pair of sneakers!

get it out , I still have mine .. sensor was replaced in 2006 , even though I have three canon dslr's ... in fact I gave my neice my sony s85 for her first camera .. I missed that so much ( s85 ) I purchased a used one on e-bay for myself ( just fits in my pocket ) .. not about to give her my f717 , I purchased one for her on e-bay ... last summer I saw a f828 on cl .. I called and low & behold he was just down the street from me ........ it was MINT MINT MINT .... all for two bills .......... I couldn't say no , so ENJOY .........

I'm like you - have a 707 and and 828. Recently bought a used R1 and also like it very much - see no need to purchase anything new (except for the large sizes and weight of the 3 older cameras). May consider an H55.

It hadn't failed, but I love the Sony DSC F717 to let it go unused. I particularly like it with the Raynox DCR 250 for supermacros.

It cost me $91 for them to replace the sensor, and included shipping back to me. I had to pay the shipping to send it to them.

I hadn't asked them to fix the broken on/off switch which I had pasted back together, but they did replace is.

Works better now. Before I had it fixed it took a while for the white balance to stabilize when I first turned it on.

My original Sony battery pooped out on me and just wouldn't take a charge any more. Have had a couple of 3rd party batteries that I never really was satisfied. Time remaining indication wasn't accurate and they didn't last very long.

Just bit the bullet and ordered an official Sony battery and I'll try to keep using the camera just to keep that battery going.

Great thought, I just charged up my original sony battery and backups....dusted off my H2 as well and did some snaps last weekend...abit awkward on the controls and small view finder but shot thru a dirty van window thru SF of the bridge and ol'ferry tower.

Isabel, yes, that seems too short....only 120mins. My old Sony battery shows at least 197mins after sitting over two weeks and I believe they usually last about 2.5 hrs when freshly charged. Sorry to here that from a 'new' battery.

I thought that perhaps something might be wrong with my little plug in the wall Sony Charger (BC-TRM) so I tried charging the battery in the camera two times...first time was about 127 minutes of record time. Second time took a long, long time to charge and recorded 225 minutes. Just needed to be revved up I guess.

Now I'm going to see what happens when I charge the 3rd party batteries in the camera.

Finally dusted off the ol' f717 and wow it still works after storage for 2 years. Still a great camera but my eyes are straining to view thru the small viewfinder and small LCD...need more powerful eyes! Yeah still love my first digital.

I just bought a mint boxed 707 from a high street dealer for an unreal price . it's limited to 128Mb sticks and is better made than the 717 and the flash Shoe is cold but otherwise much the same, shame it doesn't do the front-ring zoom trick though the zoom rockers are better ..

I've not had either model for 7 years I'm amazed how fast it is shot to shot compared even to newer stuff and how sharp the lens is widepoen (F2-2.4 remember) , I used the old ones in Green mode (its the P mode of the 707 as you can still alter stuff) . has the oild world Sony green cast but its easily removed and then the colours are lovely ..
I'll post some up when I get chance

I'm after getting some more powerful IR lamps and going Bat hunting .. IR lamps cost the earth in 2002/3 , they can be had cheaper now.....

I'm still amazed at how fast these cameras are for their age, they stack up well to new stuff and made the likes of the Nikon 5700, Oly E10/20, canon G2 and even the early Pannys like the LC5 of their time look very very sluggish

Yes, I agree that many of the newer cameras are not made as solid. It seems that the plastics are getting cheaper and quality compromised and lighter. Hang on to the old machines if you still use them, they are made better.
I did a field shoot with the old 707 and it still stacks up well, had to WB correct a few but when set to Sharp-2 and PP'd it's still excellent by todays standards

As for Build Quality, yep, there was a drop even going from 707 to 717 - the body alloy is thinner and cheaper, the mode dial and Speaker panel are plastic, the focus ring thinner and not as precision feeling and the buttons down the lens barrel cheaper too. the 828 redressed the balance and was the best made of the lot (Yup, marginally better than the 707 even) - shame the innards were junk :(

New Sonys are as poorly made as Panasonics etc - I remember when everything Sony made had Rolls Royce build, even basic cassette recorders etc - though that was the 1970s ....

I always liked the 707 better than the 717 despite the lack of MS Pro support and the front ring not operating the zoom ..

A very heavy crop from the 707 as it doesn't get get close in Macro mode at full zoom .... I DO have a 58mm Sigma Apochromatic macro lens which I'll try, the quality of it is the same as the Canon version (called the "500D", I bet they regret that name now - LOL)
