Football Pictures

Nice Pictures romoto! It looks like college stadiums have a lot more light than the High School fields I have been shooting on. My only comments are in regard to lighting and color. It seems the green of the field is not that green and that the players are pretty dark. Maybe you can tweek them up in photo shop some!

I've had my D100 since July after moving up from an Olympus E-10.
I use my camera for mostly sports, mainly football and basketball.

great shots, I do highschool and some college sports. What iso were you shooting at? How do you compare the shutter lag and frame rate on the D100? I have used a D1h and S1 pro. Would like to try a Kodak 720x and also the D100. Your shots look good enough for you to give hints. The dive pic is super, with the crowd expressions too.

That is the color of the field. It's old astro turf. Big controversy here about changing the field to field turf. The lighting is pretty good. I've been shooting mostly at 1600 and some at lower iso's. I think I probably can get away with shooting at 1250 or even lower. I've shot only three games with my D100 so still learning. Just got my nikon 80-200d for the last game. I don't notice that much of a shutter lag, but still trying different techniques for focusing. Frame rate is okay so far.
Thanks for your responce to my contribution. Hope to contribute more.
Thanks,
romoto

Do you have a 400mm ?? That is the best lens to isolate the QB and throw the backgrounds out of focus.

Pretty good stuff for that "amateur" camera!!

If this is the real color of the field then why does it vary from picture to picture???

Most of my pictures were shot with wb auto. A few with wb cloudy-3. I think the pictures shot with wb auto seem to capture a more true picture as far as color. I resized all my pictures to facilitate a faster upload. Also processed each picture with fred miranda's photoshop action. I may have over processed for web viewing. My prints seem to be alright. Still a learning process with my D100.

Did you notice what % of the players on Hawaii had that same tattoo around their left calf?

Pretty interesting.

Thanks,

Great photos. I'm on the same sidelines but with only a Oly C2100 and E100RS. I was thinking about a D100, 1D or D1H, but your pictures convinced me that a D100 will do just fine. I would appreciate it if you could answer a few questions. Did you use a monopod with the 80-200 D and what shutter speed did you use? What percentage of out of focus pictures do you get and are you able to switch from the QB to a WR quickly with success? If you see someone shooting with a C2100 come by and say hi, I'd like to meet you. Some of mine.

Never mind about the shutter speed, I found that info. When you got you new lense, did you go down to ISO 800? Also, is that 80-200mm the AFS model and if it is, where did you get it from? Doesn't seem like I can find one in stock. I would rather get the VR one coming out but doesn't look like it will be out for a while.

Alright, this man is clearly lying... The D100 is never that sharp and the focus is too slow for sports! Come on admit it, this is a EOS 1D or D1X isn't it?

Actually before you guys threaten to do bad things to me let me just say that I'm joking here and love my D100. Most of those are very sharp and excellent pictures overall.

I hope you're mocking people there because I don't believe this is an amateur camera. It may not have all the bells and whistles of big brother but it isn't exactly impotent either.

I forgot to bring my mono pod at the last game. I get less OOF pictures with my D100 than with my E10. The autofocus on the D100 is much better. I'm still learning to use my nikon. I shot mostly at 1600 but I think with 2.8 I can probably shoot at a lower iso or at a higher shutter speed.

Your pictures are very good. Hope to see you at todays game

I looked at your UH photos again. At the Tulsa game, what ISO is you use? I ordered a D100 yesterday. I hope it comes in this weekend so I can play around with it before the San Jose St. game. Since I won't have it for very long before the game, are there any tips and settings that you can share with me? Thanks Irwin

Here are a few tips:

Get to the game early. Take a bunch of photos as the players do their warm ups. They usually get out onto the field around 1 hour before kickoff. That should give you enough time to figure out what works best with your setup and the conditions at the location.

If you can bring a laptop and transfer some to the computer, you can get a real fine look at the detail, take note of your settings, etc..

I've found the viewfinder to be less than optimal for reviewing shots.

I wish I had a laptop but don't. I guess I'll have to play around with it days before the game. I'll bring my C2100 just to be sure that I get some shots if I have a hard time prior to that day. Whats the learning curve like for this camera? I've shot with a fully manual Canon F1 and the rest have been point and shoot cameras.

I don't think the learning curve for this camera is any higher than any other SLR. You may want to tinker with some of the extra features though, which could take you as long as you want them too...

;-)

-m (still tinkering, after about 1500 photos).
