USB 3 CF card readers

I just installed that and is fassst. Make sure you have a SATA port that supports hot swapping. The SATA port on my board supports hot swapping but wasn't compatible with the reader. Switched it over to a SATA port on a PCI card (only SATA I) and it works. Just ordered a PCI-E with SATA II so I hope it works with that.

PCI 150 is good enough. PCI E is not going to give you any faster speed.

The only time a smaller sensor with the same pixel count is superior to a larger sensor (aka higher pixel density) is when you are focal-length limited.

I've tried these Addonics cards but I think they're more trouble than they're worth. I did manage to get one of them to work on a 32 bit Windows 7 machine but it made Windows take about 6-7 minutes to load. After that, I was getting read speeds of 40-41 Mb / s. from a Sandisk 45Mb/s CF card. That's quite fast.

I couldn't get one to work at all on my 64 bit Windows 7 machine so I eventually gave up and decided to wait a few months until USB3 card readers would be available. The simple plug in procedure is easier than trying to get SATA readers to work.

It works for me. Perhaps that's because I'm in the U.S. and you're in the U.K., and something about the link assumes their US site.

Just use google (or a similar search engine) and search for Pretec 240 and you should find it.

Here is something for people impatient with vaporware...

I was able to create my own USB 3.0 CF reader that works with my Super Talent 64 gb card... It also works with one of my Lexar cards -- all others I have are not recognized -- so it is not foolproof.

Unlike the eSATA cards I can hot plug it and it will play the 1080 MKII Canon QuickTime mov files without a hitch on my laptop directly from the card without the need to reboot. I can copy the files at about 30 MB/s which is pretty much the max of my card and is no different from what I get from eSATA.

Here is what you need

1) Addonics CF to SATA HDD Adapter

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=addonics+CF+adapter&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=16880248972578468304&ei=CW1CTImlJcL78AaowpAc&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CDAQ8wIwAg#

2) USB 3.0-SATA External enclosure (Tried 2 of them -- both work)

http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=IM-U25183B&c=pw&hash=cab863Vwf5yXKtAze58VGtEyd5wPiJTHzPiv8XutFZnyhNfFmPTelnxMxHoSzn7c9gTkOVuRkklvl9Tc6UJ8Jb%2BEumvN0m6amiP86lMjwGX402Ejxpm6brNW8Ttv4uFG7sbzneBHMLcErugl%2FMYHZ4nBkIi4sK9SioeuOFOewF9kBq105E9lQYHLtDH0FyRy0drOvpGh6y8NeTnpG6RCf2nblJ0J7MdykhTHjdlyEiMF8pA

Of course you will need a USB 3.0 port on your computer. Can be added via a PCI adopter on desktop or an Express Card on Laptop (examples)

And here is the card it works with:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250643134112&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=%3F*F%3F&GUID=7d2321651200a09c16912c61ffed0b5a&itemid=250643134112&ff4=263602_263622

The reason you can read some of the cards but not the others is because of the controller in the enclosure.

Just use Addonics as it is connected to $30 controller with SI (Silicon Image)chip on it and it will read all your cards and hot swap.
How do I know? I have it.

That is because Addonics only made it to work with the cards with Silicon Image chip on it. If your motherboard has one you are in luck. If not you can buy one for less than $30 in any PCI form you like.

There are good reasons:

Until USB 3 came around, I was able to copy files from a CF card to an internal hard drive on my laptop at + - 30 mb/s using Addonics placed in a eSATA "toaster" enclosure. I normally do not store photos or movies on my internal hard drive, so I had to do this again -- from internal laptop HD to external eSATA HD using the same "toaster" -- (which was still faster then copying it directly from the Addonics to external USB 2 HD... My laptop has only one eSATA port)

Now, I can do it in one shot from one external USB3 device to another in a few minutes instead of an hour or more. Plus those 2.5" hard drive enclosures are much smaller than the eSATA"toasters" and they don't require external power -- those are biig pluses when you are traveling or transferring files "on location" away from a wall plug.

Addonics USB 3.0 enclosure? or a CF card to SATA mini-board?

I connected Addonics internal drive (just like you have in the picture) to a internal controller with SI chip on it. SI chip is a requirement for the drive to work with all of the cards.

http://www.itechnews.net/2011/03/30/usb-3-0-superspeed-card-reader/

As the world is moving from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0, multi-in-one memory card reader also joins the crowd. Brando‘s new USB 3.0 SuperSpeed card reader utilizes the USB 3.0 interface to deliver a transfer rate of up to 92.22MB/s for read and 62.17MB/s for write. The reader offers two SD/SDHC slots and microSD/SDHC slots, as well as Memory Stick PRO DUO, Memory Stick Micro/M2, CompactFlash and xD slots.

I've heard SanDisk or Lexar will have usb3 Card reader, but dont know when they will release it? CF must keep up the speed otherwise it's useless.

Delkin recently announced that it's USB 3.0 card reader is now shipping. You can order it directly from Delkin here:

http://delkin.com/i-6483222-usb-3-0-universal-memory-card-reader.html

It should start showing up elsewhere soon, too.

For example, I see that B&H already has a "New Arrival" listing for it you can use to order one (although it's shown as not being a regularly stocked item with 7-14 days delivery from it B&H):

Reading this thread reminded me that my tower PC had already got a card reader fitted by the supplier. Indeed also with a firewire slot.

For years I have been downloading my files via a USB 2 card reader. I decided to see how much faster the pre-fitted device was - I think it is connected by SATA to the motherboard.

I got 35 18 meg RAW files to the minute on the USB 2 route and 47 to the minute using the pre-ftted device. Not all that impressive a jump. I don't have a firewire card reader to try - and am not tempted to buy one after this experiment.

I am staggered that USB 3 is going to be so much faster.

But then I don't understand computering.......
