Hello All,

just got the new camera from fuji, had little time initially to play with so just switched it on checked up on the zoom and turned it off, but today when i turned it back on again, things went okay till I pressed the shutter to take some pictures, the main screen went blank and remained that way, the green indicator just lit continously and I was like now what ?? so after a few minutes I turned off the camera and nothing would happen, so finally took the batteries off and tried it again, the screen came back like normal, so adjusted the camera to take another snap and same thing happened, my cam just froze like before. So I changed the batteries and again tried switching it on, nothing is coming on the screen. It's totally frozen, but if I press the DISP/BACK switch while turning the cam on, the firmware version info is appearing saying v1.02 which I believe is the latest. Did I buy a brick ? please guys any info would be help full. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the problems straight out of the box. Don't be detered the camera has been excellent for me. You've really tried everything I can thing of...I'd call a fuji tech or return the camera. This isn't acceptable.

Good luck.

When I first started reading your comments I thought that maybe you were using the EVF for shooting because the LCD will go dark when doing such, but should quickly resurface unless the EVF is being blocked.

I would try a factory reset for starters. If that doesn't work then I'd try some good old fresh-out-of-the-package Alkalines (if you're not already using such). If the problem still exists.....I think you got a brick. :-(

Is that the QC on these cams is not as it would have been if they were manufactured in Japan. As far as i know now, the HS10 is manufactured in Chine and i think Indonesia.

There may be issues with QC in both countries.

There have been some lockup issues with this camera posted in the forums here...a few, not many, but I've also experienced this. In fact I did yesterday I believe. This was almost certainly a battery issue. My indicator was on showing that I was getting close and all of a sudden I got the frozen screen. I didn't feel like unscrewing my tripod mount to reset via a battery removal, so I ejected the card as I had done a previous time.

That reset the camera. I put the card back in and turned the camera on and I got the big red battery light in the center so the initial lockup occurred right when I was just about out of juice. I think I can trace my lockups to battery level. FWIW, I'm on 1.02 also. I've had this happen with 1.00 and 1.01 though. It has happened I believe 4? times since I've had the camera though, and considering the number of shots I've taken (about 4000) and if it IS a battery level issue, I'm not too concerned.

If you get it with fresh batteries, though, I'd be contacting my nearest (or most responsive) Fuji rep!

First, make sure your batteries are fully charged, like Photorealm says.

Next, make sure you are using a good memory card. Try another one if you're not sure.

Then, do the reset (it's in the menus).

If it still malfunctions, send it back. No point in struggling with a defective product. Your retailer will probably take it back or exchange it without question.

Frankly, it sounds like it's shutting down due to insufficient battery power, but it could be something else. Defective products do get by the inspectors occasionally

Thanks All for the responses,

Batteries were changed to brand new, I figured out after playing a bit to get access to the menus, took the batteries out, switched the cam off, batteries back in and press playback button while switching it back on again, got the setup menu on the main screen. Did a reset, nothing changed.

EVF can't be a problem since it was working fine with the above scenario, if I put my eyes closer to it, it activates otherwise the big screen was working fine. Now once I switched it off and back on again, the same thing happened, blank screen and nothing et all.

Even switching it off does not switch the camera off, there's a subtle clicking sound along with some squeakish noises coming inside the cam but I need to put my ears really close to hear them. Wonder what they are for ? Anyway spoken to the guys who sold it to me, they want it back, keeping myself patient and busy in other stuff while things get sorted out ...

Hiya Photorealm,

You might end up corrupting the memory card, resetting as you describe. Would be painfull on a important shoot.

If i remember correctly, it is mentioned in the manual, not to remove the mem card while the camera is on.

The clicking sound - that could be a battery issue. It's happened to me a few times on rechargeables and the batteries were the culprit. Never happened when using Alkaline.

Formatting the memory card on a computer card reader might help... the camera might go nuts if the card is corrupted already... (i know my mobile phone goes)

Yes, i think it's a corrupted memory card issue. Format memory card using the camera and it will be back to life. I hope so.

Greetings.

Often devices don't provide a proper/complete support of memory cards protocols, so it is always advisable to avoid in device formatting... however, sometimes, a device only works properly with a card formatted in it...

Well.... i can only wish good luck...

hmmm! anyways I've given the cam back, tried it all on cam, like formatting the card etc. so my lesson on this: whenever you purchase a product - open it, check it thoroughly, I was in such a rush that I asked the guy to just pack it and let me go, too bad I never realised this could happen :) second, when you post for help don't leave the post count to 13 either ... specially when the next day you'll get a replacement. See ya guys, will come back with pics

The LULZ ...

Well... hope you have better luck this time...

I've ordered the HS10 2 weeks ago and it was supposed to arrive this week, but the store supplier is making me wait for quite some time :(

Friday (that luckily is not 13th - Thursday his an national holiday here) the store guy said he will try to contact the supplier again and tell me - try to get where the HS10s went... ... or if they exist... or when will exist :|

With my luck.... hmmm .... i won't get the camera this year... *sigh*

Got a replacement today, it could have come earlier but the guy said they normally check the returned one to see something was really not okay with it, and it turns out to be some manufacturing defect as loose internal wiring causing the black outs. Ahhh!!! so, for the folks comparing it with DSLRs,

well this is a very good camera for those wanting to learn photography, I mean combining everything it offers, high speed, long zoom, manual settings, histograms and a long list of etc. etc. IQ is not that bad and the samples show that. So for me, getting a complete package with a lot of stuff to play with and learn over a period of a few months I do not et all mind the money spent, it was every bit worth it. Technology keeps improving over time, try talking to people with 5MP DSLRs and the money they spent on it a few years back :)

HS10 starts a new era, a long way to go! thanks all for the responses, next field trip pictures ...

I'm impressed with your enthusiasm!...
I really hope it works out the way you want or dream about it.

But I did wonder. Did you have to wait for the HS10 to put all this enthusiasm to good use and learning? Was, for example, the S6500 or the S100 any less of a 'camera' or too incomplete a learning package to start with?...

Good luck :)

Excellent. Good to hear everything worked out for you.

I went to the store again (it's 3 weeks since i first ordered the HS10)... they gave me a date: 28th June... Since i will go to a big town today (it's around 200Km or 120miles of travel) because of family and health issues, i kindly asked if i could cancel the order for the case i would find it cheaper ... they accepted... as long i give them the cancel confirmation in the next week ... :)

Additionally, a friend of mine recommended me to get a better camara since he thinks i would rapidly reach the limits of this one, i told him a bunch of cameras that would be better, but price is quite higher, he searched and found the Panasonic GH1 quite cheaper than it is usually sold (about 60% of official store price)... so i'm a bit troubled for what to go... i love the HS10 price/features balance (i've even made a RAW converter for it)... but GH1 (and now with hacks or the new 1.33 firmware) has a lot more into quality for both stills and video... the price and the risk of international internet commerce makes my choice quite hard...

(jk'ing) oh choices.... why couldn't they sell them for the same price... that would make my life a lot easier...

Well, the GH1 is significantly better than the HS10, but beware you're opening a new can of worm when you buy an interchangeable lens camera.

First, there'll be a huge learning curve (though you can do okay in auto mode).

Second, there's no do-it-all lens. You're going to like the kit lens, which is okay. But then you'll want a prime, like the 20mm 1.7, which is great. And great for low-light party/restaurant/indoor type settings. But then you'll realize that lens isn't enough and only covers certain situations, so you'll want more lens....
