What the he** is going on with the forum!!!!

I would not use your words, but yes the last thing we need is a higher than though individuals choosing what should and should not be discussed. It's funny the ones that complain discuss the most in the very posts they are complaining about. I think if a post was out of line Phil would end it. He stops bad language, I don't think he wants to stop free speech.
I've said that this forum needs a moderator before because I've
seen pretty downright stupid and childish posts here like the ones
you've mentioned. I would have deleted many useless threads had I
been a moderator or at least I would have grouped them in another
heading. Some people seem to post threads like this forum was a
chat room instead of using email directly.

I get so excited to read about the Nikon D100 and more... but now with all the BS, I kinda avoid all the threads and only read my threads that I reply to or posted.

-Randy
So, here I sit, looking at all the threads and the first 9 out of
10 are about either a petition or a lawsuit.

So, I dig further and look for the injustice or malicious behavior
that would require such actions.

So, what did I find?

I found posturing, chest-beating, immaturity, and irrational behavior.

I used to drop by here and give and receive tips on photography and
using digital equipment. Where has that gone?

Instead, I have witnessed bashing (yes bashing) of individuals that
provided update information and bashing (yes bashing again) of the
person that provides the forum and provides in-depth reviews.

I truly believe the energy put into these child-like high school
cafeteria activities should be diverted to learning the craft and
art of photography. This camera is just another tool – like
a brush to a painter or a chisel to a sculptor. If the tool does
not work, get a new one – technology does not drive artistry.
Talent transcends the technology. Suing the toolmaker because he
wants to repair it for FREE is ludicrous.

Give Piggy back his glasses and move on.

Take photographs, critique yourself, learn, ask question, and repeat.

Well if you really think about the D100 is still very much new...most people wont write about photography until all facets of the camera have been discussed and takeing apart with a fine toothed comb. Also the fact that there are still things here and there that people find with the camera that are not so Kosher, doesn't help. So let them say what they have to say...come back in a few months and all will be diff until the D2 comes out...hahahah.

That's funny. It will start up again. It's like the Boxster and then the Boxster S,etc.. Boxster (D100) vs the 996 (D1X).

I agree with you, Kathy.

I used to come around here a lot, learning from others about technique, experience with equipment, etc. I only check this forum 1/10 as often as I used to, becuase of all the B.S. you refer to.

Phil, if you're listening, I suggest the following: establish a policy that in a forum such as this one, postings MUST BE DIRECTLY about equipment, problems, solutions, uses, techniques, etc. Then, set up another forum where people can talk about initiating a lawsuit, what petition they want to develop, which Nikon technician they want to draw and quarter, who they want to bash, etc. You maintain their free speech rights, and I maintain my 'right' to see I come to dpreview.com for in the first place--that is, the art and craft of photography. If the posturing and bashing and lawsuit-threatening continues, I think you'll find those who come for an educational experience spending less and less time here...and that'll hurt dpreview.com's bottom line.

Just my opinion. Now go ahead and bash away. Or, better yet, sue me...lol

I think you have made some valid points. However, I would like to point out:

1) The internet is a great tool. I wish I could eliminate junk and porn mail from my computer, but I can't (at least not totally). Does that make the entire internet worthless? No. I ignore and move on to sites I enjoy and learn from.

2) Forums are great tools. I have picked up many great tips from them. We all choose which ones we can follow and participate in - if bashing doesn't interest you, go the other way, nobody is forcing you to see the whole spectacle. If you don't care for a television show, what do you do - keep watching and then grouse about it?

3) Judgemental perhaps? IMHO, when someone has a "photographic" or digital problem, I am not going to sit here and say that they have no right to voice their opinion. I do believe that's how they operate in IRAQ! If I personally see no merit in their arguments, I close the window and open another one. Posts about lawsuits and complaints may be extremely important to the posters. These are people speaking their minds. What you consider "junk posts" may be very heart-felt opinions from a person who is looking for help and advise.

4) In case you haven't noticed, there are a ton of forums out there. Maybe you can find one more to your liking.

5) I think Phil has done a great job in managing this web-site. Moderating must be very difficult with all of the diverse opinions.

Please do not take this personally. Your opinion has been voiced many times previously, as so has my reply.

Friendly your,
Nicholas

Some people get frustrated here...:)
Some people expect more from an $1000 investment then others do.
(and it's a lot of money I think..)

Some people read a lot about a new digicam...most of the reviews

are all "good-news-shows"....but with the digicam in the hand it's a kind of different:-)

Don't shoot at me please but the best comments I saw for a long time came from that Fuji S2 digicam:)))

After people bought a digicam, more and more of the truth is coming out in forums like this one, if you like or not.
(and more frustration is coming up???...)

But, I like to read this forum, it's different:)

If you don't have a Nikon DSLR, why are your trolling here? Oh, I forgot...Finland

A nice troll post? Hehe. Go figure :)

Anyway, yes, true, I don't have a Nikon DSLR, but that doesn't, as far as I know, mean I can't read stuff in this forum and even gasp make posts. Let's just say that I have a general interest in cameras.

As for trolling... I'm sorry if you think I'm trolling, that wasn't my intention. I was merely showing my disbelief on the actions of some of the people here. If I'd get a firmware update to my CP5700, I'd be happy to send it to Nikon for them to do that, just to get it. I really can't understand why people are about to sue Nikon for offering a free upgrade! Unless you're a pro who has to have the camera for his work, you shouldn't have too much trouble with this. And in no case should on consider suing them for this! Not that I'm saying everyone is doing this, but some seem to.

As for me being from Finland, what has that got to do with anything? I can do that too... "Bah, them stupid foreigners, always suing everyone for everything." :)

You're welcome here anytime, Teppo. Besides, you own a Nikon. Since the actions of other Nikon owners may affect Nikon's attitude toward toward all Nikon owners, including you, you have every right to voice your opinion on this matter.

Ron

And, I disagree that he doesn't own a DSLR. If you get into technicalities of light path and the desperate need for the sound of mirror slap, he doesn't. But if you look at it from a "making photographs" point of view, he does - what he sees is what he gets, high quality zoom lens, high resolution and high pixel count.

Maybe he can't come here because he doesn't have dust problems on his CCD?

I'm VERY interested in the 5700. I find I like working with a 995 more than a d1x, much to my surprise. Better ergonomics, better for street work, less obvious, easier to hold on to in tight dangerous places. The only thing I dislike is the viewfinder, same as I disliked in the film world. I've always thought that a paradigm shift in image capture as large as film to digital needed a similar size shift in user interface and packaging. The 9XX series was close but no cigar. The 5700 may be the one...

There goes the degree stuff again. As I said, I'll be more than happy to scan my degree and email it to you. You sound pretty insecure yourself. What is your degree in? Secondary Education. I'm right about the Kindergarten teaher- aren't I?
The feeling is mutual hun!!

Rob Muller, you win (if you felt you were in some form of “dish it out” match” )

Yes, I surrender.

If you want to pretend to be an engineer with an MS and have a successful business - what do I care – obviously you do based on your persistent urging to prove the point. And I especially don’t care for you to email me proof (suspect of course) of same.

Also, if you believe me to be a Kindergarten teacher…fine. You are SO superior (feel better?). Geesh.

What I do know (as provided by your past posts to others) is that you do not help people – you criticize them and make fun at their expense.

What sick enjoyment do you receive from that??

Yes, you win. Your type normally does – even if means hurting others.

Oh, and PS…Drexel is not a “real” college, if you know what I mean. You should have picked a better one.

Last post for me on this thread - I refuse to converse further with a person that derives sick pleasure from hurting others.

still don’t get it. I suppose the MS Degree curriculum from
K-mart does not have any English lit requirement
Nope, never said I had an MS in English
c) Beating your chest excite me?? How pitiful. The fact that
you are asking indicates your how poor your sel-esteem really is
along with the attempted boast of a figment degree in ‘a
‘ above.
It was a joke. See, that's the problem with you. You don't know
when people are joking with you. You have to learn to get a sense
of humor. I have no problem with self esteem. I'm happily
married, have three kids, own my own business and am very
successful- thank you. And, since you're still talking degrees, or
the doubt of mine, I will be more than happy to scan it and send it
to you..
d) I have reviewed some of your other post to this forum.
Wow, I really did get to you. Starting to wonder who I was before
you started insulting me. That is weak.

It would
seem you have a penchant for poking fun and ridiculing others.
Nope, just a penchant for voicing my opinion just like you voice
yours.

You
feel good when you do that don’t ya? You feel like a bigger
man?
It upsets you that men rule the world..doesn't it? You probably
talk about your male boss behind his back too. I know your kind.

That fake MS degree is not good enough to carry you through
There goes the degree stuff again. As I said, I'll be more than
happy to scan my degree and email it to you. You sound pretty
insecure yourself. What is your degree in? Secondary Education.
I'm right about the Kindergarten teaher- aren't I?
The feeling is mutual hun!!
