EVIL prototype

Thank you for your reply. The back of this camera is approximately 8 centimeters wide, and 6.5 centimeters tall. It simply cannot have both an EVF and a decent sized LCD. Maybe there should be two versions, one with EVF, and one with LCD?

The DP1 already uses the most elegant solution which is to have a detachable EVF. It's the best option because 1) you don't have to manufacture two versions of the camera 2) Many people would rather compose with the LCD than an EVF so the EVF would be a smaller market 3) A dead/defective EVF could be replaced without service or even upgraded with a more featured version down the road.

I think the biggest failure of the design is that it hinges on K mount. Any attempt at an EVIL from a minor player in the DSLR war needs to be a completely new mount that would allow for adapters for K mount as well as Canikon lenses. EVIL is a niche and so is Pentax. A niche of a niche = no sales. The first into the market needs to tap users from other brands.

Not sure about this prototype but IMHO the reason that Live View in DSLRs is way behind "prosumers" is because they don't have the benefits of EVF -

Whilst there are many things about my previous prosumer I don't miss I would certainly like a Live histogram in the viewfinder of my DSLR, EVF is the way to go IMHO - it's probably way off yet though as it certainly needs significant development for DSLR use.

The only thing evil about your prototype is that it defies the laws
of physics. The Pentax K lens mount requires something like 45mm
from the back of the mount to the focal plane. That's almost 2
inches of depth added to your prototype.
Oh come now, with heavy cheating, surely we can overcome mere physics!
Add another lens affixed inside the camera body to shrink the focal distance.

What? you think the thickness of the additional lens would negate the gains?

Try something REALLY creative. Make the lens out of diamond because of its high refractive value, or use a fresnel lens. THAT would be evil.

Or, just change the gravitational constant of the universe. That'd get 'er done.
:-D

There should be JUST your version, with an optional LCD screen that plus into the camera. This LCD screen could be the same exact size as the back of the EVIL cam and have a touch screen feature so, once you attach it, the manual buttons won't be needed. Plus, you could have a different one, one that is more for macro work, 7" screen (actually be able to make a good judgment for a shot) plus loads of integrated flash memory (say a 128Gb or so, depending on prices) and it's own battery...yeah, it'd be a brick. But hey, everyone would get what they want. If the EVIL isn't enough on it's own, Pentax get more money because the user has to buy the extras. Those who don't want them don't buy them. :)

Those were some of the most interesting pictures on this forum :) :) :) Good job!

I really like your idea! A cheap camera with expensive add-ons would be good business for both Pentax and smart consumers. Those who crave something special could for instance get a tiltable LCD if they are willing to pay a premium price.

The camera is now under production:
Hehe, it seems as if Sony stole this idea.
And then they removed most buttons to make the interface much worse.
