Don't list your gear here

I don't understand the reason some people here sign their names and list all their camera goodies underneath. It didn't bother me at first, but then it made problems for me.

It royally fouls up attempts to search the forum archives to find evaluations of the equipment when half the results are just someone listing their gear in every post they put here.

Someone in the Nikon forum recently raised the same complaint.

So, please, don't mention "ST-E2" or your 28-135 or whatever else it is you own unless you are actually talking about what it does or how well it works or if it's what helped you capture that great photo sample you are posting a link to. Something useful or informative, please.

...you start to recognize whose posts to ignore in the search results. It's a shame, they may really have had something valid to say, but I'm sure there's someone else who owns the same equipment who has just as much to say about it without needing to tell everyone s/he has it.

Oh no.... big egos will be tarnished. My toys are better than yours ;-)

Also... some of these people may be known on their communities and expose themselves to lurking eyes, but I suppose they don't see it that way.

This is also a limitation of the forum software. My forum software seperates the Sig from the text body and will only search body text & subjects. This prevents this very issue.

and there's whole threads here about people not using relevant subjects also. (subjects like "What do you think").

One thing the internet has done is to lower my estimation of the average intelligence of the general population. Guess I've been mislead all these years because in my line of work (computer software) I generally deal with fairly sharp people.

I just list the cameras, that way if someone is thinking of upgrading from - say - an E10 or C2100UZ or has a D60 and wants a carryabout with IS they can ask me what I think of the others in comparison and why I kept them..

I don't list lenses and won't even when I get L-Glass, I don't see the need and feel that listing things like Grips, tripods and bags is definately over the top..

I also modify the subject line from the original if I remember so that people can get an idea what direction I'm going in with the conversation..

Altering the subject line is particularly useful when going back to a lengthy thread to dig up a particular post. I usually try and do this too, particularly as a thread gets longer, but sometimes in my haste forget.

Having a doctorate, hopefully exonerates me from being juvenile(but occasionally childish, admittedly so being a member of the human race). I was expressing the frivolousness I felt towards the statement. This being a free forum, one persons opinion can respected, but not be expected to effect change upon the whole forum. This was my way of injecting a little humor into what I felt would get a little nasty towards the poster(have seen it before on those kinds of posts). I also do not feel offended by your comments. This is a free forum to express your feeling, but less not forget we are wasting space once again NOT posting anything useful to the photographers here, which was more or less why I posted in this silly topic. I am dreadfully sorry tho' that you have grown so old and intolerant of your fellow man that you would stop enjoying life. I would really miss the theatre myself.

Hmm... I suppose it is bad for searches. But, see below...
Someone in the Nikon forum recently raised the same complaint.
It was a thread in the Nikon forum that made me put up the equipment list on the signature. Hmm... something to do with... something... LOL. Anyway, I put it up because I thought that it's useful to see what others use, so you can get some idea of what the other guy is using and then you can view his/her statements in a certain angle, etc etc. And easier than listing over and over again what you have when people ask, etc :)

Of course one solution would be to have the information on the "Plan" field on one's profile, as someone suggested, but I thought the signature way to be quicker... oh well.
