I know dpreview likes pasting their ads everywhere, but yeesh can we please make the text forum and reading blocs bigger? We come for a forum not some flash showcase with giant ads assaulting us from all sides.

I agree. I really hate the new format.
The forum only takes up 2/3 of the screen widthways now!
It's so bad that a significant percentage of the thread titles are cut off!

Browsing just gives me the feeling that the site is saying "hey look at all this and oh!! theres a forum down here in this tiny box now too!"

We don't need the hot topics and posters etc on every individual forum ALL THE TIME.

I also miss having a different selection of challenge entries at the TOP of the screen, and not as a large slideshow format.

yes I would much rather have a banner of ads across the top and a wider forum aspect. I get one maybe 2 messages on the screen at a time and have to scroll scroll scroll ... I really just need to find another forum I guess.

which happens to have forums as one feature. The only way to avoid advertising is to charge admittance.

There are a thousand MWC out there in their own little worlds with web sites dispensing information they've gleaned from their years of experience- or so they say- anyone who chafes here has options.

I never said we should avoid advertising did I. I have no problem with advertising. My problem is that the ads take up as much or more space than the actual forum.

There are masses of forums out there who have full-screen width forums who manage to advertise and pay for themselves.

A) Don't put animation on your website. Full stop.

B) Don't clutter up your website with images and graphics that look like ads themselves.

Uh... it's the same width it was before, except that the left and right columns are now combined in to one column on the right, which looks to be equal to the width of the separate left and right column of the old version.

Ah someone worked it out, you get a gold star.

The new design pretty much draws attention to the massive side panel as almost a waste of space. The old side menu has gone and the advertising panel/features i don't want to see panel has been widened to take up the space the menu had.
The forum sorely needed that space instead.

We all know advertising is important and keeps business going. The problem is that when I try to read something and someone is constantly waving his hand into my view it gets annoying quickly. That's what all these little animated ads essentially do. There is constant movement in my peripheral.

Yes it's your site you can do whatever you think is best for it. But don't get sarcastic and condescending when visitors get annoyed and use ad blockers and scripts to use the site the way they like it.

Well, one something (ad, image, graphic) split into two sides draws less attention than one combined into one bigger entity. Do I also get a star for stating the obvious?

Exactly. Thus the new layout is better for advertisers. ... the ones who make DPReview possible.
I am not arguing against adds, I am just arguing against pretending that nothing really has changed regarding the relative weight of the different kinds of content (which is what Phil was implying).

Sorry, where did I say that?

It looks very professional and I expect to get used to it very soon.

The ads are a necessity for free-of-charge survival. The page can be easily adjusted to hide them and still show the forum very clearly
Congratulations on a very smooth result : )
