Shay... you've met your match here ! LOOK

I think I remember seeing a post that he removed all his photos from the site a while back...... for whatever reason I have no idea.

As for graduated filters.... I've never been much of a fan of them... despite the fact that I went out and bought a 12 filter kit to experiment with many years back.

L8tr,
Mark J
Zip.... I have a little bit of filter knowledge but, what the heck
is a tabacco graduated fiilter and pardon my inexperience to ask?
Or, maybe I should be asking what does tabacco graduated mean ?
your guess is good as mine. Thats why i had to look it up. I was
expecting to see a UV filter made by some smoke-a-holic with
yellowed tobacco fingers. hehe

I have some filter knowledge too but not when it comes to these
graduated filters. Im always meaning to look into them but always
seem to forget. Theres another photographer on PhotoSig that uses
grad filters a lot too (Darwin Wiggett). Youve must have seen his
work

and its only a $15.00 filter...amazing....may have to look into that.

You are right about one point... that some of the guys shots are twilight shots filtered to perfection.

However, as the old saying goes....

it's not whether you wiin or lose.....it's how you play the game. In ths case, the guy is playing the game quite well !!

I really only used the Shay reference because his night shot of Settle was foremost on my mind when I saw these NY night scenes and started wondering if the guy was using the layering method to create such great shots. Also, I wanted others to see that there are OTHER ways of getting good night / twilight shots wiithout the use of layering.

PS, Shay needs no defence... he needs more offense LOL Especially if he's a Seahawks fan. LOL

K ?

L8tr,
Mark J
This other guy's shots are excellent, which confirms something I've
been noticing lately. The better night shots are really twilight
shots. The graduated filters give more of an illusion of
nighttime. By comparison, Shay's night shots are just that, making
it more challenging to get good exposure.

BTW, I'm curious what the image would have looked like without the
warming filter. What's a good site to see the effect of warming
filters?

Chuck

Sorry to hear that....
some people are just plain immature!!

If it were me I would have ignored the jerk. Then knowing me, I'd probably start some flame thread in the thread posting area. LOL

Mark J
If you look at this photo of his:
http://www3.photosig.com/viewphoto.php?id=161997

He didn't like someone's critque of his photo. He got friends to
gang up on Andrew Van Beek and I'm sure the same happened to the
other 2 members. They basically took almost all of his points away.
I experienced this same problem after 2 days I joined Photosig. I
got so upset that I did the same back to the other member. The
admin wants me only to reverse what I did. I told him no and he can
delete my account instead of waiting for the deadline.

I think he said he needed a 'fresh' start or something like that. He got tired of looking at his own photos and wanted to evolve/move ahead. Imagine that....tired of looking at his own photos....man ol man. But anyways...he's back. He's posted a few and hasnt lost his touch. Nice work

Not to change the tone of my original message here but,

that guy Darwin Wigget is one of the best I've ever seen at filter use and his technique knowledge is astounding. I hope some day to reach the level at which he is not.

Probably happen right after I buy my first DSLR LOL
See, motivation for plunking down 2,000 plus green backs !! :-)

I bet it can. There are a ton of aftermarket filters for PS that can be done to the exact amount that looks great.

Hal
I have blue, grey, and tobacco grad filters. I haven't used the
tobacco one yet, but I've unsuccessfully used the grey and blue
ones several times! lol They really are a little tricky, and only
work well under certain circumstances.

Here is probably my best result from the grey one. It's not great,
but I wanted to maintain some exposure on the far side of the pond
so I used the graduated filter so I could expose a little longer
without overexposing the sky.

and its only a $15.00 filter...amazing....may have to look into that.

That's my simple conclusion, having examined them closely.

Of course, this is not a contest. :-]
However, toinght I learned of another photographer who's night
shots make my jaw drop. I don't know who this person is
(personally) but he's a master of the "night shot" for sure !!

Well,

I can tell you that the 58mm thread kit exists. I have one from Cokin.

Don't know about this met your match thing but the photos are wonderful and I'm particularly interested in the nightshots. In particular the Manhattan shot is amazing.
One of my favorite types of photographs.... one I have yet myself
to master, are night shots. Shay's infamous (infamous to me :-)
night shot of the Seattle skyline (please correct me if I'm wrong
on my memory) is one of those images I am just in awe of.

However, toinght I learned of another photographer who's night
shots make my jaw drop. I don't know who this person is

Take a look and tell me what YOU think of these.... especially the
Brooklyn Bridge shot, a shot that has been taken a gazillion times
during the day, rarely seen as a masterpiece like this....
