taken with E-3, 14-54, off camera vivitar and FL-50.

next attempt i'll make an effort to use a tripod and liveview to manually focus on the Rubik logo, which is not in focus in any of these.

in remember some time in the 1980s when my dad would not leave home without it ;) Today he can still resolve faster than I can - as he probably will decades from now...

Focus could be sharper, but you could cheat and run it through Focus Magic once with radius 1- that would sharpen up the edges considerably.

Clear glass over black felt for the bottom? I need to try that with some of my "product" shots. I've read about it, but never experimented.

Did you have a 3-foot long snoot on the FL50? That beam is tight! :)

Thanks for the inspiration - I haven't done enough of this style work in a long time.

Good shooting.

Equipment in plan

I have made easily usable "snoots" or "snoods" with everything from paper towel rolls to mailing tubes. There is a LOT of long tubular "stuff" in the world...

I even used a 6 foot long 8 inch diameter plastic pipe to make a subject appear to be in a spotlight, when I didnt have a "spot"..

thanks... a had a bit of time after a long working day and thought I'd photograph my toy. The cube was placed on top of a tall wooden stool; its top surface was semi-gloss, hence the relection you saw. I did think about using a reflective surface (I have a piece of glass that when placed on top of a black surface gives nice reflections) but that would have taken a bit more work so i skipped it.

I did not use a snoot. Instead, I zoomed out the head of the Vivitar and placed it right at the endge of the frame. That was on the left side of the cube. On the right side i used an umbrella, the larger light source, with FL-50. I had a black cloth some several feet away to prevent any light spill. Next time i'll take a photo of the setup and post it, it's pretty rudimentary.

I'll use live view next time to focus on what the spot i want... thanks for looking.

That is a very neat cube! :) It almost looks as if the photos are illuminated by some backlight... very cool, thanks for showing it.
