Three shots from E1 get published!

Gidday Raj

Congratulations! Well done.

Lovely, evocative shots, mate. Well seen and well captured.

I reckon these just made it into your "Hall of Fame" folder on my HDD, along with your previous shot "Dark Corners". With your permission, of course.
Of course not John! Personally, I feel honoured, thanks so much.

Do you just send your photos for their consideration
Or it works in another way.
So far I've been approached by several services and I do a little research to usually see who they are and then decide whether or not to give them a release.
I highly would appreciate

And do you get paid for that?
So far I haven't actively pursued monetary compensation, however I do ask that my work be credited.

I believe folks like Doug Brown will have a better idea about these matters as they are real professionals that pursue photography actively as their career.

I was thrilled and now I'm actually elated by all the responses here. It's also so nice to see members taking an active interest to ensure my well-being in these matters, truly a delight!

A few of my pictures have been used in a newsletter, small publications, and in a book.

I have gotten paid for photographs that I made in assignment, but not yet for photographs that I have been contacted about.
I do however :
  • insist at the very least to get photog credit
  • ask them to publish the URL of the gallery (furhter exposure)
  • try to make some sort of arrangement to make it a win-win situation, if not moneywise then otherwise
Example :

FNAC has asked me to use a few pictures of the Fun Lovin Criminals Mini Concert for their website. I was there because I wanted to be there and enjoyed it.
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1022&message=34856645

I will do that, I mean give a few photos in web-resolution (with photo credit) for the exposure, but will also try to arrange for FNAC to throw in future photo opportunities, remember me when an interesting assignment comes up etc : I've shown them a bit of how I work and am friendly to them, now if this results in them ASKING me to make pictures a next time, I think I can negotiate a few terms.

PS : and I like these winter shots of Raj, but I've already said that when he first showed them. Now i thought this sub-discussion merited some thought.
I personally have a problem with this. Both free Metro and free AMNY are owned by the NYDaily News and Newsday....both large corporations...both make $$$ from advertising. I'm sure their execs and writers don't work for free....neither should you. Again thay could offer you something...a small stipend. Your're helping them make $$$. I guess you could rationalize doing it for the exposure and the photo credit but again I feel differently....
Thinking about this, I really hope Raj is at least getting a photo credit. Raj, I don't think you mentioned if you were? Generally this needs to be specified beforehand...
These are the reasons why I really appreciate the support system this forum can sometimes provide! :)

They mentioned that I would be getting photo credit, but I believe I will be asking for money if they come back to me. Although, there are so many free images available on Flickr, it would hardly make a difference to them.

These are very nice pictures.

For all the people on this forum who freak out on the latest sensor, best DR, most FPS... it might be an eye opener that it is only your photographs that matters for clients. The camera is just a tool and even with old and outdated tech great images can be made...
... all this tech stuff is highly overrated.

Keep shooting with your E1 and enjoy your pictures

Next time when you are asked to give your photographs for publication for free: ask yourself, if everyone who is publishing your work has a retirement plan, if everyone who is publishing your work is paid a salary...
Why should you ever consider giving your photograph for free?

If the writer or journalist gets paid, if the printer of the magazine gets paid, if the guy who is on the phone with you gets paid while he asks you to give your photographs for free....

If you don't get paid and if your credits are not given directly under the photo, why would you even consider giving them your photo?

Pricing: what is the value for your customer? What is your investment in time and money?

You can value your images on what is in them (not only where it appeared). Value them in what they convey, how people respond, react, pause while viewing them.

Highly recomended reading: Best business practices for photographers... by John Harrington. After reading this, you will ask money for every photo published. (and you will get it)
