550D - Video Recording has been stopped automatically

Well my results are not very good in my tests.

Samsung SDHC Plus Memory Card (class 6 hi-speed) will not record for longer than about 15 seconds.

Lexar 133x SDHC (class 6) again records for slightly longer, 15-20 seconds then stops.

Verbatim Pro Video SDHC Card (class 6) performs slightly better, 2 minutes 30 seconds of recording, then fails also.
Transcend SDHC (class 6), around 30-40 seconds, then fails.

After I checked the black card, I got the red one, 16G. This is seems to be fine, recorded 12:15 movie, taking about 10 RAW pictures. Meter went up to about 2 bars, sometimes didn't show up at all, so looks like this card is OK with 550D

Hi,
I would like to add a few observations..

I am using a Canon EOS 550D

Movie recording aborts with the following message:
"Movie recording has been stopped automatically"

I observed the problem in 1080p independent of frame rate.

I have only observed the issue occur within the first 30 seconds of the start of recording.

Restarting the video, once, twice or three times usually seems to resolve the issue.

For example after the camera aborts, I restart and it will record problem free for 10 minutes.

Some have suggested that the SDHC card may be the source of the issue.
I have not observed an obvious co-relation between the cards and the problem.

I have reproduced the problem on different Class 6 SDHC cards.

Strangely enough I was not able to reproduce the problem on my slowest SD card, below Class 6.

Low level formatting of the SDHC cards made no difference - the problem persisted after formatting.

Basically, what I have observed so far suggests to me the issue is in the camera.

There could be several reasons for this, but I don't want to speculate.

Lastly, I am seeing this problem at room temperature and at 5 degrees Celsius outdoors.

Cheers,

I received my 550d yesterday and it had the same problem. It would record 2-10 seconds and stop automatically. A quick format of my class 6 Sandisk did not help, but the low level format (within the camera) worked wonders. I was then able to make several 4 or 5 minute 1080p video recordings without issues. Good luck to you.

never ever seen the gauge u mention

i have shot video thats over 5-6 minutes and no issues 1080P or 720P

I use a Class 10 16GB Sandisk Extreme labeled 30MB/s
I have the same problem "Video Recording has been stopped automatically" on my T2i . It happens when using both of the Class 6, 8GB SDHC memory cards that I've tried. One is a PQI, one is a Transend. Both have been formatted in the camera.

The problem shows up quickly in both 1080/30 and 720/60 modes. Sometimes the gauge fills quickly and it quits, other times it just quits. I've never successfully recorded more that 10 seconds.

I was assuming that the cards weren't quick enough, but then I saw someone mention HD Tune for testing transfer speeds. I downloaded the free version, and they both transfer at greater than 12MB/sec using my laptop card reader. That should easily be fast enough. Both cards recorded video OK with the T1i.

Anyone with any suggestions?

Thanks

As discussed before, not all class 6 are equal. I had Fuji class 6, which chocked immediately on video. LG class 6 was OK, but stopped video, while taking RAW picture. As far as other users experience, good ones are:

LG 16G class 6 Pro (red and yellow), SanDisk 16G class 10,Transcend 16G class 6/10 - although one user reported intermittent problems on class 6 card. Anybody else has no problem with SDHC card and video/taking RAW pictures simultaneously , please add to this list.

I'm using an ultra cheap brand-less Aldi card marked 'high speed' with no issues at all. I guess I must be lucky indeed!

My 6 month old Sandisk Extreme III 30MB/s cat 6 works perfectly with video in full res, no bar on the side after 5 min. However, I do get a small ( 1 sec) delay in the video when taking a raw shot during the movie.

Hi guys,

I have the Canon 550D and I'm using Kingston 4GB Class 4 SDHC and Kingston 4GB Class 2 MicroSD with Adapter.

Both recorded the 1920x1080 30fps videos flawlessly.

Even on the Class 2 - it recorded more than 4 minutes, to only stop due to lack of space. :D it wasn't an empty card

Interesting though, Class 2 was rated 2Mb/s but my 4.13 minute video was 1.35GB in size and that comes to more than 5Mb/s

Not sure how that works out. :D

I had a bad card as well, I posted a thread maybe a week ago saying "that my video only lasted 4seconds" well I did have x2 SanDisk EXTREME III 8gb class 6's but I guess they were either defective or what not but i returned them. I just received an A-DATA 8gb class10 :D memory card & it works flawlessly. I use an 8gb class6 microSD card for my smart phone &i've done plenty of things with it, partitioning, etc and it runs perfect so I personally trust A-DATA. I'll test out how long the video lasts & take still photos in between to get an estimate of how long it'll go for. I also paid less for the A-DATA 8gb class10 too. Definitely satisfied.

I picked up a PNY Professional, 8 GB, Class 10, SDHC card for my T2i that is supposed to arrive tomorrow. It's a 20 MB/s write speed, part # P-SDHC8G10-EF.

Has anyone used this specific card in their T2i?
