Went to my local Washington State Dealer today and the Canon Rep entered with a preproduction 1DS. Not having a digital camera yet I can't comment much on it's features. The camera is one of twelve preproduction examples in the country. However, in conversation with the rep, I found out that the camera will complement the 1D and is intended for architectural and landscape photography. The 1D to be aimed at Sports photographers and journalists. Intial deliveries along with the G3 will be out at the end of October. They are hoping to have production ramped up by the end of December.

He also stated that Canon was trying to get D60 production caught up by the end of October a date that the dealer thought wasn't likely. Canon is trying to get a whole line of Digital slrs out and his gestimate is that it would take around four years to complete the line up from the rollout of the D60. He also tended to think that the D60 would remain the same in resolution except for refinements in in the cmos.

Hope this is somewhat informative and not too much of a rehash.

Glazers but the rep wasn't leaving the camera behind and wasn't letting anyone store any pictures. Glazers already has two on order!

Are you sure it WAS a 1DS? - not just a 1D with an S transfer on? I mean, the difference is all INTERNAL isn't it..

So, are you one of the two? Are they charging for being on the wait list?

When I asked about the 1Ds in HK, the guy at the store immediately referred to it as the 'Gold version'... that was before the official announcement. So I guess there are preproductions floating around.

I wish my pockets were deep enough to justify buying one. Thus I have no idea if they are charging to be one of the first. I have yet to buy my first digital camera so my learning curve will be extremely steep. My first one will probably a G3 or D60.

Yes, the camera could have been a ringer with just a rebadge! The store salesmen were joking that that could be the case. The Canon rep was a marketing guy and stated that there were only 12 preproduction models within the country. He also stated that by sharing the body with the 1D Canon was able to save considerable money.

Hopefully some inspiring soul from this forum will have a CF card intheir pocket when they spot one and let us all see a real test pic under known circumstances :)

I can testify to the validity of the camera. I was there as well and know the Canon rep. It is a full frame camera. Yes it was a pre-production model, and we were not allowed to take pictures with it, as it was not the final firmware version.

Samys in Los Angeles hosted couple of canon reps for Q&A over the 1Ds. The turnout was nothing I've seen before on the second floor. There were four 2 hour sessions and each were jammed packed!

We had a very brief moment to handle the 1Ds as it was passed among the goers. In the expressions of each person's eyes that touched the 1Ds caused the everyone to more and more anxiously anticipate the experience. So much so that in every session, according to samys staff and the security guard, a brawl broke out whenever someone beheld the 1Ds longer than others.

When the 1Ds arrived on my lap, I started to grow beneath. My life changed from then on; when the rep told us the price tag I wilted in grief.
