i hate digital zoom

Careful about saying "I do," it's gotten a lot of people into trouble!

Digital zoom on Sony digicams uses the raw data prior to compression and seems to be as good as or better than the best PhotoShop can do with JPEGs. I haven't noticed any significant degration when going from10X optical to the additional 2X djigital. The images may not be as sharp as wide angle, but they're pretty good, and they certainly allow me to record images that others can only dream about. Especially envious are those who travel with a P&S with no more than 3X zoom. They cannot believe what they see when I show them a 20X zoom of what they have just photographed at 3X.

I admit that I was anti-digital zoom for a long time. Especially going from my experience with the one from my old Olympus 2100uz.... then I saw some of the photos that mxcat was taking using digital zoom. I was quite amazed!! Heck, I had to try it from myself! I'm still amazed at the quality. I always had mine turned off but it is now permanently on. No, it's not perfect but it's pretty darn good to me!

what camera u use ?
x10 opt + x2 digi?

it was alway off on my 707
bet few days ago i did "reset"
in it turned on-i didn't see it
and it destroied a days work...
 
I use a 707 which is 5x optical and 5x digital totaling 10x when both are used.

I always left my digital zoom off until I saw those pictures. Now I use it, because as you say, it's not perfect but is still pretty good.

Or you mean 5X at 2X digital? : ) It's a multiplying effect to get 10X

CD1000 of course. Whatever slight deterioration that takes place when going from 10X optical into the digital realm is of minor importatnce compared to the added magnification you obtain. If you want to make 11 x 14 prints it may not be that great, but for everyday purposes such as travel photos that will be shown on a monitor or TV, its almost as good as sex ( I said almost!).

isn't using digital zoom the same as if you simply enlarged it in photoshop? if you do NOT use the digital zoom and then later just blew up the photo in photoshop and printed a cropped portion of the picture wouldn't that be just as good or better than using the digital zoom?
 
thanks to the digital zoom i could take this photo still almost as sharp without needing a telescopic lens and not to have it half the size!

Maybe yes, maybe no. The Sony system digitally enlarges the image before it is made into a compressed JPEG. Your PC opens a JPEG which has already been compressed and which has already lost a certain amount of data. Once it does its thing it recompresses the image and looses even more data. In theory at least, the Sony system should have better results and it seems to. Some reviewers stated as much when Sony first introduced their system. Do other cameras work that way - I don't know, but maybe not.

Sony cameras use the RAW data from the CCD to extract the digital zoomed photo. That makes the quality of the digitally zoomed photo much better than if done in a program like Photoshop.

This is especially true of higher-megapixel digicams like the F707, where there is the quality glass to augment the substantial amount of pixels.

I don't quite see how the glass affects the digital zoom in higher megapixel cameras. I seem to be missing a step in the argument somewhere.

I don't think he's saying that better glass effects the digital zoom, just that better glass along with Sony's system results in better photos than from a camera with lesser quality glass and PC enlarged images - a one-two punch so to speak.
