Two days ...

... I was looking at another photographers 'asia people' portfolio, and was inspired to try and get a similar look. Not as easy as it seems.

Anyway, I would be interested in your feedback.

It is probably a love/hate thing.

Cheers.

I thought they ought to be here - shows what can be done with the humble S6500 without a macro adapter , just the bare camera .. for far more varied 6500 stuff look at Lillianna's excellent pages

... Cool !! Is that in-camera ?

Love that first one.
Its PSP9, I applied some clarify, then chrome effect with colour set to dark gray, then a large increase in contrast while keeping brightness down to control highlights, then sometimes some edge erosion, then resized and sharpened.

Here's a few more

... OK. Found all the settings but I don't get the effect you are.

Can you help a little with values for the settings. Also, dark grey, which values. I found 64,64,64 seemed OK. Still don't really get same as you though.

I like the effect, would be good to try and master it, as you have.

Cheers.

Hey Dave,
You know me ...I'm often going for a DOF look.

This one is nice but the subject went a bit out of focus. If that was the intent, great.

Usuallly I dup the original layer, then select the foreground subject and place it on a third layer, and clean up the edges of it. Then I blur the middle layer, apply a mask to it and then a gradient blur to the mask so that the foreground isn't blurred and the background is. Then I just have to burn/dodge the middle layer a bit to temper the almost inevitable halo behind the foreground subject.

Not sure if that is the sort of feedback you were seeking but in looking at the photo I immediately got the impression that a shallower DOF was part, at least, of what you were after.

Cheers,
jj

Here is the exact values I used, but sometimes you have to vary them based on the particular image.

Enhance photo, clarify; value=5

Effects, artistic, chrome;
values: flaws=1, brightness=50, colour=32,32,32

You can experiment with all of these, and if you want a colour one then choose use original colour.

Enhance photo, automatic contrast enhancement;
bias=darker, strength=normal, appearance=bold
(applied 4 times or untill dark enough)
these can also be experimented with.

Now if the edges are too sharp and bright, use:
effects, edge efects, erode

If you did this step, you will then need to use fill flash filter, value =50
and also add some more contrast and brightness as required.

Otherwise, it is ready.

Here is the untouched original wing

Here is a giant insect wing in BW

Here is chrome with Using Original Colour (I also increased the colour saturation)

All of these settings can be adjusted using your eye as a guide.

Have fun
Brian
