My box from B&H arrived today, containing a shiny (ok, matte) new Canon EOS Rebel XSi + 18-55 IS kit and 55-250 IS lens!
  • Battery is charging
  • Software is installing
  • Weather is horrible, so first shots may be later than I would like, but I'm glad it is here!
More to come... :)

well, how is it to believe a print that is photoshopped?

All in my humble opionion of course!

If I seem to talk nonsense or you can't understand me, it's probably my English :)

Thanks!

This is far from my first DSLR. I started with an EOS D60, and played the "1st in line for an upgrade" game for a few generations until I ended up with two EOS 20D's due to forgetting to cancel a pre-order. I sold one right away, then the other a few months later when I was entertaining the idea of the next big upgrade (5D, I think).

To "hold me over", I picked up a Rebel XT (350D). After looking at my actual results, and considering my shooting habits, I decided to I decided to jump off the roller coaster, and lived happily with the XT for a long time.

I expect the XSi and I will be very happy for a long time to come (or until I get the "video" bug, ;) ).

Thanks!

I already got an interesting tidbit out of the 55-250 IS manual. I've always maintained that you should use the "effective" focal lenght of the lens on a crop body when calculating shutter speed, but I never saw that suggestion formally documented anywere. Until now.

I noticed that Canon's own calculations do take the 1.6x crop factor into account when suggesting shutter speeds, and talking about the IS advantage.

As mentioned, lousy weather, and now it is dark out, so here is something I pulled from the closet...

Most of the EXIF is there for those who care. 55-250 @ 200mm, wide open f/5.6, 1/60 sec, flash, IS, ISO 100.

Full frame (resized):

Center Crop (unprocessed actual pixels):

Center Crop (autolevel, USM 143, .6, 0)

Note that the patterns on the boxes are the offset print screening, not camera noise or other artifacts.

Congrats on the new camera! Looks like it's working great.

I got a T1i for Christmas (with the 18-55 IS lens), and it's great. I'm very impressed by the kit lens -- it's good enough that I (for now) feel that I have the "short-end" covered well, and I'm thinking of getting the 55-250 IS lens.

I'm just blown away by the fact that I can take very good, hand-held shots inside at night (with normal interior lighting) and not have to use a flash. Even at ISO 400 and 800 -- the IS must really help a lot, because when I looked at the picture data, I noticed that many were 1/10-1/20th of a second -- and sharp!

Contracts! I have the 450D as well....but with the Sigma 18-50 F2.8 lens.

Heres the future investment list:
1) Pol filter
2) Battery grip (Either canon or Opteka)
3) Flash gun (I bought a Cullmann 4500C - great price!)

My future-buy list lincludes a grip, one or two extra batteries, and a proper bird lens (I know 250mm isn't going to be enough for that). Otherwise, I'm going to give the kit lenses a workout, and do a spot comparison between them and the 24-85 I still have from my prior kit.

Congrats! I just got my T1i last night. Due to other preengagements, I was not able to do anything really with the camera. I got it turned on, took a quick pic of my lens and camera cap. Then it was done for the night. I look forward to playing with it more tonight and hopefully "work" from home tomorrow due to the "massive" snow we will be getting.

You might also want to consider the EF 70-300 IS for your bird shots.

I too am playing with my new 450D which arrived a few days ago. Like you I'd been using a 350D since '05 which has been a solid, reliable performer - sad to see it go, but I've sold it to a young, new photographer who will use it well. I'm very happy with the 450D so far, the low light performance is terrific, I'm finding ISO1600 shots to be excellent compared to the 350D. Plus the control enhancements, bigger lcd, new IS kit lens - all great improvements!

I did some test shots yesterday with my 70-300 @ 300mm, this is a detail of our frangipani tree (Plumeria) flowering in the summer heat.

Glad you're having fun with yours!

For the birds, the 70-300 won't be long enough. I'm leaning toward the 300 f/4 L IS + 1.4x TC or the 400 L f/5.6.

I might also just get a new Bigma (50-500).

Hi Woody,

How do the two Rebels compare? My wife is a Canon shooter and currently has the 350D. She would like better auto focus and especially better high-ISO performance and was contemplating the 450D. You have just made this very migration, so I'd be quite interested in your impressions and a comparison between the two bodies.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Unfortunately, I can't give a true side-by-side, as I had sold my XT (and most of the rest of my kit) early last year. I did take the XSi out for a spin yesterday, and so far it seems to be doing OK. I definitely need to get back into practice, though, as some of my shots - especially at the long end of the 55-250, even with the IS - aren't giving me good vibes. I'm not going to blame the equipment yet, however.

The screen is huge. :) AF seems pretty reasonable. I "accidentally" took some ISO 1600 shots in full daylight, and the noise wasn't too horrible, though it was noticable compared to ISO 100 (big shock, eh? ;)) I might post the 1600 and 100 of the same subject just for grins, but not a bit until later today.

Woody,

A very good choice! I got my XSi, 35 f/2, and 18-135 IS a couple of weeks ago, and my 55-250 IS on Friday. A really nice to use camera and lens set. I also have the 270EX and 420EX flashes to go with it.
