Went to the Apple store today for the first time since it was remodeled last November. I noticed that none of the about 20 machines I checked had Aperture installed. Asked a couple of the sales reps and they acted like they had never heard of it.

Since I have about 20,000 images in my Aperture library and have been a little paranoid lately about the lack of visible support from Apple, this just played to my paranoia. Any idea if this means anything?

It's a professional application and most of the employees aren't trained on it. I went for training and there was only 1 guy in the whole store who knew anything about it and I knew almost as much as he did.

The Apple stores are "retail" outlets and that application is used by professionals. So.. I wouldnt' read into it.

The apple stores I frequent have aperture on their MBP and MacPro machines. They don't install them on their consumer level computers (for what ever reason).

I don't take the apple emplioyee's lack of knowedge as any sign as they seem to be lacking in much computer knowledge in the first place.

About every 18 months there is a ripple in the Force and every Aperture user goes nuts predicting the end of the world. Actually, it goes along the lines of "Apple hasn't provided RAW support for X camera" and "Apple is going to dump Aperture."

Sadly, the first criticism is too often true, but the second is usually simply silly. Apple may indeed drop Aperture, but there is no reason to believe that they are going to do it any time soon. (Ironically, there are also people complaining that Aperture 1.5 won't run under Snow Leopard, and I consider AP 2.0 to be a REAL advance over AP 1.5)

Lightroom 3 beta is available for a free download. If you see things in Lightroom that you want, right now, then switch. But make the switch on the basis of tools and features that are available today, not futures. If not, then relax, your 20k images aren't going to erase themselves just because Apple hasn't released Aperture 3.0. Playing with LR3b there are certainly some nice tools, but where is my soft proofing? Where is my full screen editing? And why do I have to put up with this "modular" silliness?

Best wishes!

The same can be said for some of Aperture's silliness as well Perhaps version 3 (if apple does update it) will rectify the problems. But the plug-in architecture seems to be a stop-gap measure of adding increased editing capabilities that LR already has. Sadly this is destructive, where as LR provides advanced non-destructive editing.

This was one of the main points as to why I switched. Plus Adobe seems quicker in update ACR then apple does with providing RAW updates.

Overall I liked aperture but I feel Adobe gives LR more attention then apple does with aperture.

I visited the Apple Store de La Jolla , CA .. and Aperture is installed but not in the Dock.

You need to go to applications then Launch Aperture ..
It is still my favorite Application to handle my Nikon's NEF file

Indeed AP2 is much better as I had a trial vs of it on a pre intel G5, after losing patience with the unsuitability of the bought vs of 1.5. Recently I was surprised that the program wouldn't install on 10.6 with the latest MBP. Why? It would show ok for compatibility, allow to download and install, then not open saying it was unrecognised after all.

People have been defecting from aperture to LR for a while not because apple has been very slow in updating the product. If they don't come out with it, then I'm afraid you might see a mass exodus.

I'm one of those switchers (aperture -> LR) and would hate to see apple drop aperture. I like LR and I think its has some features that are superior to aperture, I miss some of the aperture centic options. If apple addes localized editing, better editing for that matter and maybe even non-destructive plugins perhaps I'd reconsider it.
