Happy New Year 2002...errrr, 2003?...whatever!

Good to 'hear' from all you old-timers again :-)
time warp! Is exactly what I was thinking before I read your post Jim. I was wondering where is Sandman, UZpshooters, Daniella, Stinson, Buzzy, Bill H, Juli V, dboogie, Willa, and a few others. LOL Great memories to bring in the new year!

Hi EricPT
Can you please spot the deferences , between FL-36 an FL-40 .

I something that you believe that the FL-40 does better than the FL-36, or the other way around ?
The FL-40 is more comparable to the FL-50. As such, relative to the FL-36 it should be a more powerful flash (higher guide number). Also, I believe the FL-36 only uses two batteries vs 4 for the FL-40/50, so it should recycle faster too.

Finally, the FL-40 and C-2100 are the "same generation" so are far more likely to be "made for each other". Given how much cheaper this "older" technology is, it's the route that I'd go. (Still have my Uzi and FL-40 but haven't used them in ages).

Inigo,

I agree wholehartedly with your explanation and you said more with less words than I would have. Thanks for handling my 'light' work ;-).

Eric

Olyboy,

You might want to check out the Yahoo UZI Group for more UZI specific information. I see some of the same names here too but the Yahoo group has a files section that is a treasure trove of information about the UZI. Joining is free. Here's a link:

Have fun,
Eric

Michael,

Thanks for the excellent TTL info and example photos. Now that Harold 'Doc' Edgerton has passed maybe you can assume his 'Papa Flash' moniker ;-)?

I've bookmarked your photo example site, great stuff. One suggestion, maybe one of those styrofoam wig holder heads to check for 'raccoon eyes' next time tou run a series of tests? I know I'm being awfully free with your time.

Thanks again,
Eric

I tend to agree with you about the UZI and FL-40 being of the same generation (though if I remember correctly, the FL-40 had been out before the UZI came out). However, I've read that some older flash capacitors lose their capacity over the years, particularly if you don't charge it up and shoot a couple of high power shots every so often. If you are buying used over the internet, it is hard to know what the state of the flash is.

Lady s and Gentlemen .. :-D

The Olyboy had become, a truly Olyboy hahahaha .

I had on my eBay watching items , about 8 Olympus FL-40 .

In the beginning I was think to chase the low price ,
but then I said, that you do not buy a good flash every day ,
so my target changed , to get the one, at the best condition & good price.

I found a German eBay seller who had it , and by looking his other items, I realized ,

that he was an true cameras seller , that probably he had buy the item from another person, and had all ready inspect and test too.

Its at top condition outside , described as Class-A .
Price .....
Well primary price was 111 EUR , but he had an "made an offer" choice .

For start I made an 80EUR offer .. to test the ground .... He made a counter offer to 100 EUR ....... I did another counteroffer to 94.50 EUR , with shipping to Greece by Air Mail , another 15.50 EUR ... we have a total of ....

110.00 EUR = 158.519 USD

The German seller called Niels, and its a great person in communication, and speaks English too.

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130355131675

I am so happy , that no one can imagine , the UZI will have soon his brother to chat with ... :-D

Plus
Genuine bracket - Cables TTL & PC socket, on the way from US ( 60$)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320467340063

The best flash unit , on the way from Germany

And the genuine Olympus leather holster, originaly made for it , on the way from UK . £9.99 + 5 shipping .

Thats why I got this ,and the one for the E-10 ( its a bit bigger) , for more choices
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370234885071
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370227713320

And as a Chery on the pie , one rubber part , Celestron Rubber Eye Guard for Telescope Eyepiece.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250552216254
I think that it will do a great job , around the viewfinder of the C2100.

I would never imagine that i will come to the point to say that I have it all .
Specially by having in mind the original pricing .

I would be happy even if i just touching them (complete pack) ... The C2100 its not just a camera,

its an idea .... the idea of how an almost perfect camera should look - act - and survive in time.

In praxis , I mostly take pictures of things like motorcycles - and all sort of parts,

mechanical (tools ) - electric - electronics , and special devices that i compose my self .

Bouncing the light , would be a great add on , for my pictures , and because my shop its full of fluorescent lights , it will made my pictures perfect .

I liked allot the little umbrella as reflector .. that Michael demonstrated .

Not to say , that with all this Olympus stuff near me , the idea of getting and a second C2100 , as spare , starts to grow .
By having the remaping software for it , I feel totally free and independent,
as I do not need the Olympus technical services .

I've thought about trying to show the effect of racoon eyes. Generally what it needs is for my wife to be out, but for the weather to be lousy enough that I'm willing to do the setup. So far, in the last 3 years that hasn't happened.

Thanks Eric .... I had long - long time to visit it , found some new interesting files in it . ( Dial repair )

Thanks for the tip . :-)

Flashbacks, I've certainly had more than my fair share of those.

Flashbacks, I've certainly had more than my fair share of those. Did I just say that, or is there an echo in her?

To the best of my knowledge, here are the updates on the others mentioned.
time warp! Is exactly what I was thinking before I read your post Jim. I was wondering where is Sandman---{working for Fox news}, UZpshooters--{doing photography with a cel phone}, Daniella--{sitting around somewhere, looking good}, Stinson{don't know}, Buzzy--{barricaded in some compound or another in the Pacific NW, waiting out 2012} , Bill H--{sadly Bill is homeless. Got caught by his boss sending something UPS} , Juli V--{hanging out in Konica/Minolta TF, giving everyone the fish eye}, dboogie--{selling Amway, BE SURE TO AVOID HIM}, Willa-{has her own home remodeling show on cable access}, and a few others. LOL Great memories to bring in the new year!

Happy 2010

Nice one Kiriakos !!! - I have the proper UZI leather case (had it with the First UZI) and it's just fine but you'll find more room in the E10 one for a larger eyecup etc .

As for Flashes - the UZI has one of the most powerful built in flashes ever fitted to a Digicam but a bit more doesn't hurt - I have the FL50 (most powerful but most hideously expensive Oly flash) , I will have to get the cable since the FL36 would appear to work - the FL50 DOES work on the C8080 - is there a 3rd party cable available with a hotshoe on the end which doesn't need the bracket ? ......

The Oly FL-CB01 is the one that works with the Oly bracket FL-BK01, but I think they also had one that doesn´t need the bracket, the FL-CB04.
Actually no if you want TTL. Olympus never produced a cable that went from the TTL socket that the C-2100UZ has to a hot-shoe. Their solution was to force you to buy the FL-BK01/FL-CB01 combination.

I imagine you could splice together two cables that has the UZI socket on one end and a hot-shoe on the other. Since the UZI is no longer produced, I would imagine that the clone companies never bothered to clone the cable.

The FL-CB04 goes from the TTL socket to a pc-sync flash without TTL. You could attach the pc-sync cable to a pc-sync to hot-shoe converter.

I recall when I used the FL-CB04 that I came to the conclusion that the pc-sync cable was one of the worst designed cables ever, and I usually had use a rubber band or velcro to keep the FL-CB04 attached to the flash'es pc-sync cable.

Adam ... I am super happy that I got both , I had read years back ,

that could be small issues about the size , thats why I got both with minimum hesitation.

True ... Does any one remember how many GN its the C2100 flash ?

Got ya there ... all the line of the FL flashes use the same shoe ,
if it was one shoe with cable ... i would possibly get it and my self.

Funny enough , the Chinese even today , they do not even think of making an replication of it .
In many other products , they do not think , they replicate .. :-D

You are right, Michael, no TTL with the FL-CB04.

Good to have you here on the forum, I think you know more about flash and UZI than most of us!

René

This is why I was asking about a 3rd party one
