Hello,

I've got a Nikon D5000 and it came with a 18-55mm standard lens.

I am looking for a good lens for Portrait and Makeover photography. Nothing too pricey please.

Any Suggestions...

Budget?

But agree with the previous post, 60mm nano coat has the better bokeh.

Will a manual focus lens do?

I just received my Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 not long ago and am very amazed by the quality in every way.

I can't show any image now because I still can't focus properly on a moving human subject (they are all, sort of blur, I have a lot of cat shots though), otherwise it's bokehlicious...

f/1.4 cat, less saturated, it's already set to Vivid.

It's not the speed of the lens, it's the quality of the glass and coatings.

Go for the 60mm - it will give you greater detail for close ups.

Hi,

I have a 50f1.8D. It fits nicely on my D300 for portraits (for my taste). At f2.8, is very sharp and the bokeh is ok, I think.
Never tried the 1.4 (no special value added for portraits, right?).

I'm very happy with my Tamron 28-75 2.8, at 75 and 2.8 it gets decent subject isolation. One of these days I'll get around to setting up an account to show some of my better shots :O

Hi the nikon lens is fine but in comparing it to the sigma I found the sigma sharper wide open and having nicer brokeh also it's build and focus is super. Also look carefully at the reviews on dpreview and for portrait the sigma for other uses the nikon may be preferred.

The 50G is fine, but the 60G has dual purpose (general and macro, and even portrait), unless you need the faster aperture (2 stops difference can be a big deal). The 60G nano coating gives you micro-contrast and is extremely sharp.

Cheers for all the responses everybody...

Do you think this is a good lens...

Nikon AF-S 50 F1.4 is very good lens, but in my opinion Sigma 50 F1.4 HSM is slightly better. Also I like Macro lens suggested (Nikon AF-S 60 mm). But it seems all above lens are out of the budget mentioned, so possibly you should consider manual focus lens or extend the budget :)

I also think the Sigma 50mm f1.4 is better than the Nikon.

I'm planning to get Tamron 60mm f/2 macro for that (I have D90). Though I will be trying other alternatives:

Nikon 50/1.4G

Nikon 85/1.8D (does not AF on D5000; there are rumors about next D90 class body will not have in body AF motor so this might be problem in future for me too)

Voigtlander 58/1.4 SL II (manual focus - I do not know yet if I would be able to accurately focus at f/1.4 on D90 with its default focus screen; different focus screen could made it easier, but I have also f/5.6 lens on long end which might become too dark)

Hi Chris,

I am interested in your experience with manual focus since I also thought about buying CV 58/1.4. Which body and which focus screen do you use? Is manual focus reliable option for static subject at least?
I have D90 and default focus screen.

I'm not Chris, but I can answer somewhat. You can use your autofocus indicator to tell you if you're in focus or not.

I think you can use a Nikon eyepiece magnifier for the D90, DK-21M. Think it's 20% magnification.

Since your D5000 has no built in motor and can't autofocus with AF lenses, i would recommend the AFS 50 1.4G as well..

I agree the Sigma has better overall picture quality and nicer bokeh. But from my own and my friends personal experience, the inconsistent autofocus accuracy is really a problem so i would suggest Nikon more.

You can find my quick review and some sample pictures i took here, the samples are unedited straight JPG from camera.
