7D service experience - focus problems

Somewhat still on topic, but from what I'm reading in this thread, if one were to send a 7D (or any other body, for that matter) in to Canon for repair, it will be in Canon's hands for a period of WEEKS? If this is the case, is it due to current volume, or is that just standard turn-around?

I always thought they turned things around somewhat quickly (as in a few days, as opposed to weeks).
Heavens no. I paid top dollar, (which I knew at the time), shipped it off after the return period ended from the place I bought it from, (Aden in Canada), and it took over 3 weeks before they finally admitted they had the software in their hands to fix it. The jury is still out if it is good to go. One day I can put on my 85 f/1.8 and take a bunch of shots of our new puppy, everything is good. A week later took some of my wife and they were all acceptable but not quite as sharp as I'd like. I can't complain as some of the shots are great but I have a wedding to do in a few days and I'm worried as all heck and might stick with the trusty 5D Mk 1.

Do you have a problem with reading comprehension? Where did I say the cameras "failed"? Where did I say I had returned 4 cameras? I returned 3 that did not perform as well as my 40D or 50D on AF with a few other issues that were less severe.

What is your basis to state "incredibly high quality control at Canon"? Is this why Canon has taken full page color ads in the major papers the last two Sundays touting their CS center in VA and repair center in NJ? Companies the size of Canon don't do things unless there is a very good reason such as market research indicates there is a perceived quality problem with your products and services.

Do a search on the Internet and you'll find many people on their 3rd 7D looking for good static AF. I just may be one of the first to get to 4 to find a good one but I consider myself fortunate it didn't take 5.

Have a great Holiday.

Bob
.
This is purely statistical, , you are the only person in the world who has had 4 7Ds, there is nothing wise about my statistics. In fact due to the incredibly high quality control system at Canon... those statistics are conservative, 1 in 20,000,000,000. Have you had 4 brand new HDTVs fail in succession ?

Bob must be amazingly unlucky, the chances of this happening (4 bad 7Ds) must be 1 in 20,000,000,000,000, so congratulations you are a winner! I was going to joke that I was on my 75th 7D in 3 weeks, but I would be lying...
Jokes are supposed to be funny.
I know you'll keep it a secret. I can tell.
I read your joke.

When I read or hear a funny joke I laugh. What photome31 wrote was not a joke it was sarcasm and it wasn't funny at least to me. You may have found it funny only because you're of the camp that believes Canon rarely does anything wrong. You even started a recent thread about your wonderful Canon experience. Some of us have not been so fortunate or maybe some of us just have different expectations. ;)

Bob, a little problem here.

Not only did you not understand that I had not find photome31 joke funny, but you're putting me in some sort of a camp. I just said what my experience is, to a letter. How is it putting me in any "camp"?

You may have noticed I owned, still do, equipment by other manufacturers, also lucky.
How am I in a camp?

If some have bad experiences, and post them, I see not much wrong with it if there is a legitimacy there.
If some have good experiences , I see nothing wrong with posting it either.

OK, now that I read your explanation and re-read your post I see that I misunderstood the intent and I apologize. That's the problem with the Internet as it many times is difficult to understand the true intent from what is written. I know I'm not always as clear and concise as I should be.

Have a great Holiday.

Perhaps he should team up with Darwin Wiggett and start buying lottery tickets.

After a bit of thought this is bad advice -- these guys are "lucky" with bad luck, they should avoid the lottery.

As an update to my previous question below, I shipped my 7D on December 23rd, and received it back January 4th. That's 12 total days, door to door, and this is with Christmas AND New Year's holidays in the whole mix.

I'm happy.

I think LensRental is totally right when they claim every lens needs to be perfectly calibrated for each body:
http://www.lensrentals.com/news/2008.12.22/this-lens-is-soft-and-other-myths
That is one of the most useful articles on AF I've seen to date (which is why I'm echoing it here).

One of the reasons I wanted a 50D was to Micro Adjust, and it's proved itself to be worth it. My 17-55 usually found focus on my XT/350D, but I could frequently see that its DOF was almost entirely in front of the subject, not mostly behind, where it is when a lens is correctly focused. And my new 10-22 was slightly back-focusing.

Both lenses behaved the same way on my new 50D, but MA of +7 on the 17-55, and -4 on the 10-22 has banished the problem (and along with the higher resolution of the 50D, the 17-55 is now breathtakingly sharp wide open).

Like others who've posted this, I'll never buy another camera body without focus adjust.
