RD1s Tokyo Night Scenes - B&W Series - 9 imgs

I like these as well, maybe more than the color just yells at you, these are quitter. Nope, I like the color as well as these. Sometime I just want a drink of water and other times a good red wine, one is not better than the other, it just is.

thanks,

Excellent series! A job very well done although in the second shot, the guy has a very unkind look on his face! :))

As I said in a previous thread this camera seems capable of producing exceptional images.

SO WILL PEOPLE STOP POSTING THEM AS IT ONLY MAKES ME LUST AFTER ONE.

Andrew

P.S. I like your photographic style.

P.P.S. Any idea where I can get one?

Polarabbit - wonderful series!

The snowboarder shot is priceless!
yeah the guy has an attitude problem ;-)
You use the R-D1 regularly or you just digged a dusty one out and shot some frames ;-) ?
i've actually used it quite regularly for a while before i got an M8. later on i sold the M8 and switched to some other "fun" cameras ie DP1/2/EP1. then i got myself a GF1 and was excited for about a week. moved on to some older cams ie LC1 and digilux 3 and finally decided to take the RD1s out for a spin again. it is still the best camera out of the ones i've mentioned above. color rendition is the best as are the truly fine film-like grains. i would say the LC1 and RD1 produce the best straight out of camera b&w jpegs that requires little, if at all, tweaking, other than to bring back shadow details and adjust brightness.

when i was in tokyo the last few days, i was surprised to see many new and preowned RD1x (the newest with larger LCD) for sale. i was so tempted to get one as a "backup" for my RD1s for (touchwood) when it fails, but the price was prohibitive. I will likely pick one up in HKG the next time I'm back as I remember a couple of stores had new ones going for very reasonable prices (compared to current ones on offer in tokyo).
M8fan - don't think twice, just get one - it's a great little, exotic and inexpensive body option to use Leica M lenses.

Thank you. means a lot to me.

I live in Shanghai and have seen a couple for sale here, both RD1 and RD1s. Asking price is reasonable I think. Have seen many new and old RD1x (newest version with larger LCD) in Tokyo but prices quite high (almost double the asking prices of RD1/1s i saw in Shanghai).

Did you see any R-D1x in Shanghai so far?
nope. but have seen plenty in tokyo just now and a couple in HK a while back.
I am curious about the price point on these in the PRC, as prices in Shanghai are somewhat different from other Asian areas (namely Hong Kong - read: items show more usage for a higher price in SH).
i think this is a misconception shared by many. this is not necessarily true. used M lenses can be found for cheaper in Shanghai sometimes than in HKG. So can new cameras. For example, I picked up my LX3 brand new from an AD in Shanghai than was being sold anywhere in HKG some months ago. The D700 is selling cheaper in Shanghai than in HKG, and in some cases, just slightly higher (1 or 2%). I have seen a preowned D3 just two weeks ago selling for cheaper than in HKG as well. Finally, preowned M8s are much cheaper in Shanghai than in HKG (this applies to not only Shanghai but China - just do a search online for used M8s).

Mmh - I might look in the wrong shops then … where do you investigate the prices in Shanghai?

Do you have any hints (especially on used Leica M glass and a M8)?

Used M8s were offered to me in Shanghai for more than 20.000 RMB a week ago.

The advertised going rate in Hong Kong was 16.000 HKD (lens price differences were not as extreme) - that difference lend me to believe the Shanghai - Hong Kong trend.

I would love to learn the opposite ;-) , as much, as I like to visit Hong Kong from time to time.

I do only buy at shops - not from private and not used over the internet in Shanghai - that might be the culprit. Oh - and I pay the Laowai Tax too.

i mostly frequent xietu lu x luban lu, top floor is my favourite, as is another store on 3rd i think near the Leica dealer.

sounds like the going rate.

did you see this in person? i seriously doubt that you can get a M8 for 16K HKD. last time i checked in TST used shops they were going for 25-26K HKD.

same here. I bought a lens from the big top floor second hand dealer with the big Leica assortment (table in the Leica corner, lots of film bodies…).

I am not sure about the shop yet, are his prices ok? The lens is in good condition - no issues.

Thanks for the feedback - I know, what to look for now. Last time, saw two M8 going for 22500 RMB - too much for my liking at the moment.

No, I asked in a Leica only shop for the usual price at the time, as they had no M8 there at the moment. It looks like I got the price wrong then (might be more like 26.000 HKD).

Sorry for the misinformation.

After my first negative experience with a damaged (knowingly sold to me), highly priced lens, I have this bad feeling, buying here and look still for a reliable dealer for second hand Leica.

I had a good feeling with SanFrancisco Photo in Hong Kong, Mody Rd. 62, where I got my VC 15 Heliar.

i think his prices are fair. The chubby lady is a tough negotiator though. her dad (the owner) is better. also look across to the shop with the old gentleman with pictures of celebrities hanging on the wall (he has a cat in his store). he is nice. my feeling is that both shops are OK. also check out the shop on the 3rd floor, small, on the side, with the owner with mustache and his wife (i assume). he gets many of his stuff from japan i believe. condition of his stuff is usually quite good therefore.

yeah i think 20-22k sounds about right. if lucky u may be able to get something at the low end of the range.

no worries. yeah, usually that's what they do right. if they have no stock on hand, they quote you a very low price to get you to go back. the prices i quoted i saw in teh shop windows so expect a bit of bargaining lower...maybe 5%? don't know. but the point is prices in HKG nowadays are not cheap, and it makes good sense as shop rents in HKG must be among the highest in the world, thus much higher costs. this is why you often find cheaper stuff in teh US than HK nowadays, new or old. Japan can be cheap with those shop points that you can redeem/use as money and tax refund but not with the current high yen.

yes i heard a lot aobut that shop though have not personaly shopped there. you can also try Tin Cheung in TST. It is a well known dealer with fair prices and decent selection.

Menos, Polarabbit,

I enjoy seeing your photos as both of you are from Shanghai. I am from Shanghai as well, and like you guys frequent Hong Kong. Keep up the nice pictures!

Great series Polarabbit!

I really enjoyed these - thanks for sharing. I partilcularly liked the little lad on the steps. he looks like he is passing the time while his parents are doing that "boring" shopping.

Best regards,
Carl

The snowboard shot - a real slice of life. People in small cites and towns can't imagine such scenes on public transport. Yet in very large cities hauling oddities onto subways is common. A real slice of life.

Number 6 - the little boy - of how I love this shot. The highlight on the right sleeve, the dimensional softness of the face, and the slight lift of the little foot. A simple happy moment in the child's life framed by the pleasing chaos of the signage. Outstanding. I'm in awe.

Add me to the list of those who congratulate you on this excellent series!

For someone like myself who lives in a small city in the midwestern US, these pictures are an interesting blend: the setting looks very exotic, but the way people behave is so familiar.

Speaking of familiar, your experience of switching among various other cameras and then coming back to the R-D 1 sounds very like mine. I don't use my R-D 1 as much as I used to, mostly because I have let myself buy into the hype that six megapixels "aren't enough." And yet, when I do use it, it always works so well!

I have the 50/1.1 Nokton, but have been using it mostly on a Panasonic G1. Seeing this series really makes me feel I need to go out and use it on the R-D 1 a bit more!
