My rant for the day.

OK, so I just got through with a visit to the "new" KEH.com website. Man, what a mess they have made of that place IMO. Very, very dificult to navigate and read IMO. Why is it that when a site finally gets built "good" then some wise a$$ has to change it? It reminds me of when I was in the US Navy. Each time a person made rank to the point that he/she was able to change things, they did it just because they could. And they usually made a mess of things in the process. Remember how good the old B&H was? Just a couple of clicks of the mouse would get you where you wanted to be. Now, it seems it takes many multiples of clicks to do the same thing. Then you have the stupid blogs of folks these days. Everything written on a single page so you have to scroll and scroll and scroll "forever" to get to the bottom of the so-called page. Then any cliick on a link or an image takes you away from the blog, you hit back and have to search again to find the place you left off.

I thought Algore invented the internet to be fast and to save us time. :-)

Cheers.

Here is why good websites are good. It is the big industry secret and I almost wish I were kidding.

After building the basics of a website, it is standard practice to plop some of the dullest people who will be using it in front of it, give them a task like make a reservation to fly to Tucson on Friday for an airline site, sit back and see how frustrated they get.

You watch where they look and where they click. Regardless of whether the information is actually there, that is where is SHOULD BE. If that's where people look for it, that's where it goes.

There's a bit more to it then that, but basically, as people build more complex sites they forget that the visitor's first though should be that's interesting! let's read that or 'hey! exactly what I need/ when they come to a site, not oh gosh, this is some complex that it much have been designed by someone really smart Often, we don't test anymore. We forget to plop the dull guy in front of the screen and see how madly he can break things as part of making ourselves the better mousetrap, errr... website.

Technology, Photoshop and women's undergarments have one important thing in common - nobody should ever have to think about them while appriciating the results.

Their site sucked to begin with. They need someone in data architecture to smarten that site up because they have some great stuff there.

I agree. I always found it one of the most frustrating sites to navigate I ever visited. Get a listing of Pentax manual focus primes, great. Now want to see the af ones to, and I have to start all over again?

The new site appears incomplete to me - the drop downs are unpopulated. Right now its not just frustrating, it's unusable. But I assume that's just a temporary glitch.

I haven't been on KEH for a while but for the amount of time I spend on it, it probably would not mater...
Cheers.

Well, I guess that I am in the minority (again), because I rather like the changes.

I have been blowing money on the KEH site like crazy lately and I DO NOT like the new design. Most of the time I have to refresh the pages to get them to load properly.

why do they still have a category called 'digital'? you never know where you ought to be looking for any particular lens. Yes I know there are cross-references but that's a pain.

why not put all the lenses together? whether something is full-frame compatible could be indicated in the description.

AF/MF and prime/zoom are more meaningful categories.

the old site was AWFUL to navigate, just AWFUL. I could never ever understand where I wa sor where I needed to be. The search function was useless, it was just a horrible experience.

The new site is great, I love it. Just bookmark som eof the way in, easy ...... it REALLY, really needed this update.

The original KEH website was very good. Then about three years ago they "improved" it, and simply ruined its useability. I complained, and they had the nerve to tell me that it is better. Now it appears that they have "improved" it again.

For some reason, software engineers just don't know when to leave something alone. They also tend to be out of touch how computer interfaces are used by people who aren't software engineers.

I guess I could get used to the new site if I have to. However, for me the text is just too dang small as compared to what it once was. Makes for a very unpleasent experience for me.

Cheers.

As far as I can tell, there is no functional difference between the old and new sites - they still force you to browse by first selecting camera mount - with no way to include both AF and "digital" and MF in the same search - and then selecting lens type. Aside from that, I see lots of cosmetic changes which also makes no difference whatsoever as far as I am concerned. So my overall imrpession is, it's still the same awkward design, just with a different looking face.

I haven't looked at the update, but I will vouch that it was in desperate need of one. I doubt they changed one of my bigger gripes though - labeling stuff as misc brand.

I have to agree with the complaints re the new KEH website; It just doesn't work! It either times out before I can login to my account or in the unlikely event that I do manage to login the checkout does not work, as evidently others have also found. This is a pity; I have found the quality of KEH's goods and the level of service to be excellent. They just lost a sale from me because of the problems with the checkout. To add the final touch to this mess I can't even see any 'contact us' option to ask for help!
