I've just had a careful look through the 50mm samples with APS-C sensor for the Ricoh here :
http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/ricohgxr_A12_preview/

And I have to say, (apart from the bokeh, which does look very nice) I'm more impressed than ever - just how much quality we get with the E-P1 + 20mm f1.7... these beta preview shots look soft and dull in comparison (imvho).

Kind Regards

Brian

have to disagree with you here, they look very nice and naturally toned to myself, the ISO1600 shots don't look half bad either, nice concept lets hope the price doesn't get in the way too much.

I would agree, though I thought the APS-C images were reasonable. But if its no more than that & with a very limited lens range I'm not quite sure where they are going with this. The concept of lens/sensor module is an interesting one & like you can see some possibilities for that - particularly if someone came up with a sensor + lens mount module.

However, who is going to pay all that money for a compact camera module when you can buy (wait for it!) a compact camera. The images with that module were typical of a decent compact camera, but no more than that.

The point of m4/3 is the opening up of all sorts of options, including the use of legacy lenses, giving the Olympus or Panasonic m4/3 user the largest range of lens possibilities on any camera. This Ricoh system seems to close options down, unless they come up with some real stunning lens/sensor modules.

Its always nice to see innovation, but ultimately it must have a purpose and have something that makes us say "I want that" Like you, from the posted samples, that is not the phrase that springs to my lips.

For the camera and the two lenses!? That's a trifle beyond my budget. Fantastic concept and pretty nice images though. My last camera was a GX100, so I have a soft spot for Ricoh, especially the wonderful controls.

Are very impressive, particularly the couple of portrait samples.

Cheers

i think it's looking great, might have a mess around with an image or two, the possibilities are astounding with what they could do with the system it just depends if you're willing to pay for it.

Ha Ha. It's a very bizzare concept. If the sensor was interchangable seperate from the lens and 'body', I would be respecting Ricoh rather than laughing. But being forced to buy a new senor when you buy a new lens, and buy a new lens when you buy a new sensor just doens't make sence (except to the bean counters at Ricoh)

Well I am certainly not regretting my purchase of E-P1 and 20/1.7 yesterday.

Looking forward to getting out there and giving it a proper run for the money - from some initial test shots last night, I am VERY impressed. And that is coming from an ex 1DsIII and 5DII owner.

I agree, the images have something strange and not much quality, even those on the Ricoh site

It's going to be difficult to argue with micro 4/3, and m43 is a much pleasant system with much more flexible, besides olympus and panasonic lumix (and leica) do much better lenses

Quick off-topic question...why did you switch from 5DII to MFT?

Thanks, dD

I'm so glad I got up at 7am to include all the prices in our preview.

I guess I was in too much of a hurry to read the specs - and I actually looked for the price - at the bottom of the page. I'm glad you cleared it up. My mother always said "you always have to learn things the hard way." Guess she was right.

Sorry Richard. Thanks for the clarification.

I bet one of the first things you will see in the next couple months is that someone will figure out a way to attach a computer or preferably a smart phone to one of the lens+sensor units. Could you imagine an iphone dock with your iphone as the lcd and controller?

I just wanted to stress that we have provided quite a lot of information, even though we were difficult and made everyone wait until the embargo for it.

I beg to disagree Brian,

The 50mm version looks very good at ISO 1600 AFAIK detail and noise levels.

The compact sensor version also surprised me for detail and DR from such a small sensor.

This is not the camera/system for me but AFAIK IQ IMHO it delivers.
