I love my LC1....a few more Shanghai shots

I love B/W and I think you have here a great series. I like all your shots; great job and great place!

Lovely! The LC-1/D2 is a real killer when it comes to in-camera B&W shots. Very usable right out of the camera and a little PP can make them really shine. Did you know that if you set the jpeg to B&W and shoot RAW you get a nice colour RAW file and a nice high-quality jpeg at the same time. Sometimes comes in handy.

I'm really liking my LC-1 - so much so that I got silly yesterday and won a Digilux 2 on eBay. I'm not sure of the history of my LC-1 and, given the issues with sensors, I just didn't want to not have one of these cameras to play with. The D2 has had the sensor replaced so I should be good for a while...

Look at the picture, not the pixels...

The Panasonic LC1 (aka Leica Digilux 2) was among the best concept/design ever made. They should have continued this series without any body change except just enhancing the viewfinder/rearfinder and the ISO sensitivity of the sensor. Alas the LC1/Digilux2 was plagued with a sensor disease that killed most of the sensor rather quickly, a general recall and free replacement should have been done by both Panasonic and Leica worldwide (which was not explicit in some countries like France).

I miss my dead LC1 and dream that Panasonic and Leica instead of selling their GF1 and X1 would, after their trials and fails with V50/digilux3, etc, could have provided us with a clean Iso 3200 and 8-10 MPX LC1s/Digilux2s, with otherwise exactly the same design....

A very enjoyable set. What wonderful views of the city! You've done the conversions very well. Altogether most impressive.

That is very true !!!

for the encouraging words.

yes, i think shanghai is a city worth visiting. to me, one sees a chinese city either for the scenery, history, or vitality. shanghai cannot compete with say guailin or beijing on the first two but it wins hands down on the third. it also has that rather distinct feel left behind from the very early part of last century under heavy western influence. many of those buildings are still around. then you have the chinese influence from the fifties to eighties, and most recently after economic reform the modern buidlings and infrastructure erected in the nineties and the past eight, nine years. very interesting mix indeed.
Very nice series, makes me wonder if we need to add Shanghai to our trip to China this spring.

thanks,

AMEN !

These are exactly the points that I'd like to see improved.

Don't even think about touching the controls, the body or the brilliant lens of this little gem.

More MP (but not too much), better ISO performance and a better viewfinder/LCD and I would be the first in line to get one.

Ohh, and a better macro ability without any macro lens would be a great plus (other cameras can do this, but the DPx and the LC1/D2 are really "special" with this issue).

I own both the LC1 and the D2 and I love them. Great B&W shots BTW. You have mastered this camera. I have recently purchased a Canon G10 and have enjoyed its more diminutive size in street shooting, but it still doesn't deliver that "Leica" feel in the final product.

Long live my 6 year old D2 and LC1!!!!

I like these shots too:) I've not had the LC1 myself but had the GRD1 in a while and decided to try and find something similar for B&W.

The Minolta Dimage EX 1500 wide or zoom is very inexpensive but still produces B&W in camera with nice random graininess and filmLike colour-shots.

Ofcourse it have it's fair share of quirks like slightly slow refresh rate (latest firmware which still can be had improves on that a bit), not the fastest cardwriting (but a huge buffer though which allow for more full-size jpegs without turning off LCD) and noisy bootup and shutdown.

I noticed that the camera can be shutdown but will not power off completely until all images have been saved to the card, that's good.

It got slammed here on dpreview but is better than that if one likes what it does well, imho. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/minolta1500/

It is hard to find these days, especially the 28mm prime seems to be like impossible to find because most buyers went with the zoom.

I got my EX 1500 zoom (Would have preferred the 28mm prime) from Ebay.de there it comes up regularly but not in too big quantities. From my experience while tracking one down, It is harder to find at ebay.com.

again, I'm not Amy.

you have confused me "polarabbit" with Amy "DRabbit" again.

=-)

but thank you for looking.
Obviously the photographer has a lot to do with it, but I agree with the posters above, this camera should have been continued in some form.

Peter.
