Well, after almost a years planning I'm finally back from our 15 day trip to Japan. I loved every second of it and I thought I'd now share some of my better pictures (imo at least) with you guys/girls for comment.

The trip went as follows:

Tokyo [5days] -> Kyoto [4days] -> Miyajima Island (via Hiroshima) [2days] -> Kobe (via Himeji Castle) [1day] -> Tsmago, Kiso Valley (via Nara) [2days] -> Tokyo [1day] -> Home to London

The following pictures are a sample of the 400 or so I ended up with after pp. Think there are about 40 below, so sorry if that's going overboard a bit but had a hard time cutting down which one to show you! If you have any questions about the subject matter in any of the photos let me know and I'll do my best to answer.

Thanks for taking the time to look and I look forward to hearing what you all think!

Thanks,
Richard.

Going in unknown place, and take photos like you did, is a great thing.
Hard to work in photography and enjoying the trip in the same time.

I like the multiple subjects you framed in your photos, probable you will post more and people will look for those with great pleasure like I did.

Because I never been in Japan, is hard to say what you could do better. I would be more then pleased with a gallery like this after a 15 day trip....

Thanks for sharing (the only one I would take in other way: the forth from back - rainy day in front of the pagoda = I would take one from ground level to use the reflections on the pavement...just my opinion..)
Cheers

Beautiful pictures. Seems like your pictures can tell a story.

Thanks for looking. I like your idea about the reflection in the wet pavement, think that might have looked nice.

Its hard to CC because there's so many if them but I'll give it a go. The first city night scenes were nice, perhaps if it were taken not so long after sunset if would be better. The street photos are nice but lacks intimacy & strong feel to it. The landscapes, the temples, the old village & the monkey were great :)

It's been a while since I've been to most of these places, but your photos make it seem like yesterday...thanks....

It's too bad you can't go back and edit to identify where they were shot...Tokyo, Kamakura, Nagoya, Nara, Kyoto, Miyajima, Hiroshima

Thanks for looking. I definitely agree with you regarding the night pictures, but as this wasn't a pure photographic holiday I had to think about my other half when planning the itinerary, so it wasn't always possible to be in the right place at the right time unfortunately. I did my best :)

Thanks for the other comments, I'll definitely keep them in mind for the future.

Probably more my poor photography skills than anything, but for your reference the lens used (far from pro glass):

Nikon 16-85VR
Nikon 70-300VR
Sigma 10-20
Nikon 50mm 1.8D

Hope that helps.

Richard.
Hi
What lens(es) did you use? They seem to be soft a bit to me

Very cool pics, only the first two night pics don't really do it for me, were they shot at a high ISO or is it movement? (Or are my glasses just blurred ;) ) No, just looking for a second time at them, I think it's just that I'd have liked them better if they were a tad darker.

I do like the taxi-driver a lot as well, I tend to forget to shot those kind of things... The young monkey is wonderfull!

I think you were quite lucky to see so many women in traditional dresses, I didn't see them so often, only one, and she was so quick I could not take a picture so fast. At that time I only had a simple P&S, but we share a couple of perspectives...

Your pics made me long to go back there as well (well, some day).

Keep up the good work!

Very good!

You did take lots of wonderful pictures during only 15 days!

Thanks, yes I thought we got pretty lucky seeing Geishas in Kyoto. We were just on the right street I think at about 5.55pm on saturday night and all of a sudden the street was alive with geishas rushing to their various venues and then at 6pm none again :) First two are fairly high ISO shot handheld, didn't have a tripod with me and did the best I could.

Thanks again!

Thanks for looking, I got very lucky with the monkey in so much that it climb up to the top of a tree right in front of me, so actually that picture is not cropped at all and is somewhere towards the long end of my 70-300mm VR lens.
