I'm about to go for the D60 after selling my entire NIKON F5 with a couple of first rate Nikon ED lenses for it. I'm choosing the D60 because it has a mirror up feature for close ups, its cmos does not attract (so much) dirt/dust, plus I've had great results with the G1 and G2.

Before I sign on the dotted line, I would like to know if anyone who has owned the D60 and has been dissappointed with its picture qualities?

Any regrets with the D60?? - apart from the focussing speed issue.

Are you really basing a major system switch based on the responses you may get from this post? I'm sure you are aware that the weight of problems vs non-problems in a forum like this is high. People with problems are far more vocal than people without problems. But I'm sure you knew that.

There is plenty of published D60 output for you to judge.

Well, I love mine, but I really wish the chip was a little bigger. You can almost get down to 24 mm with a good zoom, but not quite. But from a photo quality standpoint, there's nothing to complain about ( at or around ISO 100 ). Here's an untouched, straight-from-the-camera sample from the much maligned 16-35L, and with in-camera sharpening turned off:

I wish I could have got mine sooner ... three months on a list. I'm still learning to use it.

IMO the D60 has ONE achilles heel and that is blown out of proportion (less than perfect AF) - the competitors around the same price have numerous..

Read the three SLR forums (Nikon, Here and Fuji) and see which has the most complaints then read them and take them into account.. there are so few issues with the D60 that all you see here Negative wise are Lens Flamewars, wild Photokina speculations and - err, more lens flamewars ;-) ----------- that's a good thing as far as the D60 itself is concerned - LOL.

I've only had mine a couple of weeks and I'm totally knocked out with the quality

Edward,

Thats a mighty big system change...from a Nikon fan no less. Its not that we don't welcome Nikon converts, its not that I don't like my D60.

BUT why? The new investment is going to be big...you gotta tells us what you expect the Canon D60 will do for you...

I am sure you already know of Nikon's own D100 and its no slouch!

There are minor gripes...but it depends what you are looking at. For example, if you want to do a lot of shooting in low light or expecting 5fps, the D60 will irritate you no end. BUT is you have tried some of these limitations for your self....and you still find it ok.....then a BIG welcome...

Andre Lam

no regrets..

Welcome! I'm sure you'll be delighted at your choice; from what I've been reading in newsgroups, you've made a good decision. I've had my D60 since May and I'm more than happy. Delirious? Yup!!

What glass do you plan to use with yours?

I wish you well.

Ed,
Since you already have Nikkor lenses, this makes little sense to me?

Why not just pick up the F100 to compiment the excellent F5 film camera you have now. Your lenses will work on both bodies.

I currently have a a Canon D30 and am for the most part very happy with it. The AF has been know to make a grown man swear once in awhile, but that's my biggest complaint.

If I were in your shoes, I would be hard pressed to dump that F5 at this stage of the game. I think there will be many times you wished you had it back for certain assignments.

The biggest mistake I ever made, was selling a mint Nikon F2S Body and several lenses years ago.
I can't tell you how many times i've missed that combo on many occasions.

Many Nikon people think that the F2 was the best quality F series body ever made, myself included.

The reason I tell you this is, because you also have another classic Nikon Film body in the F5. Hang on to what you have & add the F100 digital body only.

I have D1's, D1X, and D60's and the Canon has by far the best image. Its one shortcoming is AF. In the studio, its perfect. Shooting a wedding in low light is less than acceptable.

I'm thrilled with this camera from stem to stern. Wouldn't trade it for anything on the market at the moment. The picture quality goes beyond superb. You're going to love it. I had a G2 before and liked it well enough but the D60 makes it look like a toy.

. . . I surely didn't . I made the switch about two years ago over the issue of IS lenses. Although I am absolutely certain that the F5 is superior in build quality, metering and AF ability, you will not miss this with the D60 unless you are thoughly hung up on sports and low-light photography.

I will be selling my EOS 3 . . . just don't use it since I got the D60. Better AF be damned . . . the digital advantage to just too big to throw away for somewhat better AF.

BTW, be prepared for better AF on the D60 than you might think from reading here. It is just fine unless you need low-light capability. Even then it does pretty well with a 550ex or an ST-E2.

Sure, I'd like the D60 to be even better . . . . and cost even less but, until the next generation, I love this camera.

Incidentally, cameras used and owned before include the vaunted Nikon F through F3 . . . the D60 blows the doors off those cameras as far as thrill factor is concerned.

Still have my F2 but just can't bring myself to use that film stuff . . . UGH!!

I've had mine two weeks and have found the "Low light AF" business to be blown out of proportion, maybe it's because I've come from an E10, I don't know, but the only OOFs I've had due to misfocussing have been either My fault (not focussing on a contrasty bit) or Sigma's (when testing the dreadful 17-35)..

The D60 focusses in pitch dark - it turns on a light to help it like the C2100UZ does and it works too!.. the only cameras I've come across which deserve all the hell which the D60 has picked up over this are some low priced fuji models (which tend to have F3.5 lenses) and the E100RS when loaded with version 73 firmware (76 onward is OK) .. UNLESS Canon accidently fitted the AF system from an EOS10 in my 60 when building it ;-)

I've not tried it on moving subjects in low light, the E10 is hopeless at this, maybe the D60 is too - but I'd rather have ONE issue than a whole damn multitude of them like the competition..

I am so happy with D60 and it is a great Camera!
I am enjoying each and every shots of it. Go ahed and enjoy.

You will love it (as most of your respondees(?) do). I fixed the exposure problem by changing ISO from 100 to 200 which seems to have fixed it.

Cheers

I totally agree Adam... I think alot of D60 users aren't getting the red boxes in the viewfinder on the subject they want to be sharp. Steve

than focusing speed, the one and only flaw of the D60, will not even be an issue since auto focus is virtually useless in macro work. Furthermore the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro is absolutely amazing.
