Down since 9-24? What a joke? I don't like to go through the troubles of transfering my files but this may be the final straw.

Yup! It's the straw that broke the camel's back.

I bet a lot of people will cancel their subscriptions to pbase...as a result of this.

Cheers!

you have slug and the oracle boys on it.
Nancy too?

How about Mutt & Jeff?
doesn't that inspire confidence :)?
Yes! Very much so!

I am wondering what they're doing right this second...

hmmm!

It must be like Homer Simpson's mind...empty except for a single fly hovering inside.

Cheers!

a technical disaster can happen to anyone,

I am a long time user of pbase, and have a lot of pictures on the site. I hope they get their system back up and running soon, but I am not upset. technical problems can happen to any site, and as an engineer I know how long it can take to get things up and running.

what is more of a concern to me is what is happening on THIS site, dpreview. the quality of the postings really seem to have taken a nosedive. so many of the people that made this site great seem to have left or gone silent. there is so much whining and complaining and bad copy this and bad copy that. what happened?

I am a retired engineer, one of the things I retired from was Oracle, man I hated that interface.

I have 2500+ images and 139 galleries and about 6-7 years with Pbase. Been pretty loyal. Been unwilling to change mostly because of the learning curve. Now I have just about learned Smugmug and Zenfolio. Not good for Pbase. My reason for staying just got demoted.

I wouldn't mind if it's just this one incident, note I said the last straw. I have been a long time customer of Pbase like you but customer loyalty is not a right for a company. Like Ben said Pbase is not among the better photo hosting sites and did not seem to care too much to improve. Same situation for your complain of this site. You should just go to the better sites where the quality people went. Isn't free market great?

I don't know about pbase and oracle but the MIS people would be in deep s--- if this happens in my company, if they still has the job.
In my company where I used to work...the imbecile asskissers kept their jobs...and some of the good programmers were laid off.

Cheers!

right now if you aren't performing you'd be lucky to be pulling lattes at starbucks :).
Not necessarily true!

I have seen non performers (baggages) keep their jobs. All they needed was a brown nose and some good connections. In my work experiences (14 companies) I have seen total imbeciles in very high places. In meetings they bring up the most absurd ideas. Sometimes I couldn't help laughing...but luckily I did it outside after the meeting.

Cheers!

PS It happened in my sister's company too. They let go some of their excellent workers and kept some of the useless ones on board.

I'm in a similar boat, I've been using PBase for 6-7 years only I have over 100,000 photos and 700 galleries.

I mostly post sports photos and with one location over the past 6-7 years I have thousands of folks who view the photos. The real claim to fame for me is always having the photos uploaded and ready for viewing the morning after the game. I'm now queued up with several games worth of photos awaiting upload.

The problem with switching to another site, aside from the time to re-upload the photos, is that once folks start viewing the alternate site they probably won't come back to PBase. It will also take a long time to get the word out about the site change.

I'm going to give them some time yet but I'm starting to get nervous.

Anybody hosting photo data base as a business should have a backup system? I am duplicating my hard drive through Mac time machine.

...I understand accidents and systems going down, BUT, I don't understand a backup system not being in place.
...1 day I can understand.
...2 days start me thinking.
...3 days confirms IDIOT status.

I paid last week with 1 month left and I can't ask for a refund because their system is down.
I'd vent to my wife but she doesn't listen to me.
Thanks guys.

I agree. However, we don't really know the nature of the problem. It sounds like the hardware is back up but the database is still being restored to another server. DB restores can take forever.

It's very likely that PBase has never had to do a full restore and as such has never tested their procedures - unfortunately there are a lot of businesses in this same position. Mirror sites and warm sites are nice but chances are if PBase was paying for one of those we woudn't be seeing $23/year membership fees.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I could still be a happy customer if the site were back up for Monday morning.

I think Dpreview must store these locally.

I posted from a Smugmug trial account this week. Good chance to rry them out and see how I liked it. I also did a Zenfolio trial. Trting to decide which I will choose.

Even if I stay at Pbase, I will start a new one.
