Just spoke to my local Ritz-Wolf dealer
he told me there were aprox 2000 prepaid
orders with ritz and the stores would not receive
any D60 until all repaid orders were filled
he also told me according to what he had been told
the D60 will be discontinued and replaced with a new model
and this would happen buy the time all the preordes were filled
"in a few months"
anyone else out there have similar info.

Yes, of course, and pigs are flying...

Eventually, all models will be discontinued and replaced by other models.

The naivete of certain people never ceases to amaze me.

I think it is about time that these rumourmongers (dealers by description) should be named. Not just to pat them on the back at "told you so" time but to also ignore anything that these idiots might say in the future should they be proven so ridiculously wrong. How many people are now thinking that they should perhaps forget the D60 and wait? For what? Something that MIGHT be appearing soon? Something that might be in such short supply because of all the people cancelling their D60 orders?

Why don't we all sit and wait to see what CANON say?

maybe not so naive
i have bought several high end cameras from this reputable

dealer and have never know them to give me misinformation. It is not unusual in the high tech world for models to
undergo early discontinuation and improvement many digital cameras
have product lifes of less than 1 year. I would not be surprised to see a
slightly improved model in less than 6 months about the time frame it will
probably take canon to fill the back orders.

it may be all rumor
but what advantage is this for the dealer
they were more than willing to accpet my money
for a paid pre-order for the D60

ps
by the tone of these messages
i sense anger and fear in the possibility
that this rumor may be true
personally it wouldn't matter to me if i was one
of the lucky few who own a D60
sounds like a great camera.
However when ever one chooses to be an early adopter
of new technology the trade off is early flaws in the
technology which are rapidly overcome in new models
and droping prices.

Bill,

Anyone who pays out £1800 for a D30 after Canon UK denying the rumour that a D60 is imminent has to be cautious next time around. Yes, fear is a factor. Anger too. I asked Canon UK on the Thursday about the D60. As all companies would say, "not heard anything" came the reply. On the Friday, the D60 was announced. Was I angry? Immensely. Do I fear the same thing with the D60? Certainly.

Fortunately, I have a good dealer who offered to let me have a D60 with cash adjustment, he still hasn't seen a D60. Am I pleased with my D30? Very much so.

Alan

When I worked at a 'camera store' the owner always came up with phrases like that to switch customers over to some camera he had in stock or would be getting a good buy on.

THis sounds more feasible. THey are back ordered 2000 units and if they want a sale today, they need to sell another item or else you will be 2001 on the waiting list... Moreover, a Canon rep told me that honestly they get very little advance notice on Canon plans. On the order of a few days before an official announcement. mark

makes sense except this dealer knows i am only looking for the canon d60 and
is more than willing to take my money for a prepaid preorder.
I asked several times how long it may be until the camera actually arives

thats when he told me how many prepaid orders they have (ritz) and explained an updated
model may be available by the time they fill these orders
it makes sense
the d60 is probably a model that canon plans to keep around for a while
this however doesn't mean they aren't palnning an upgrade to the model
relatively soon. Possibly the newer version will have improved autofocus;)

wasn't the D60 announced last winter?
many months before it was made available?
ps

just doing a quick google search i found a d60 description from feburary this seems well
in advance of its actual availability

I agree, I've just bought a D60 and don't mind price drops, that's expected and wouldn't care much if they just upped it to 9Mp with a price increase BUT I wouldn't be happy one Iota if they announced a D60V with the focussing system of the EOS3 (or even the 30) ..

Considering that Canon don't seem to be too quick on the uptake about shipping D60s, and it not been out too long, I would think that they should/would offer an upgrade scheme to the few of us who have actually managed to get our hands on one..

Personally I think it's a load of toss..

There was another rumor started awhile ago. Check http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=3131825 for not much more information.

It seems pretty clear to myself and many others that for Canon to protect the high end it has to upgrade the 1D first. I bet it won't be until next spring or fall before the D60 upgrade appears. Of course that also means at least another 6 months after the announcement before anyone can get there hands on one.

Which means it is a tall story because even with if the D60 upgrade was announced today, Canon will have to keep filling orders for at least another 6 months.

Aside for the part in your original message where they said "in a few months," it is quite possible that what Ritz said is true--except not exactly the way it was worded.

If they have a pre-paid backorder of 2000 cameras, how long will that take to fill? I'll bet they're getting about 10-20 cameras per week--maybe more but I seriously doubt they get even close to 100 per week. Do the math and it's easy to see that at the current rate, those 2000 orders will take at least a year to fill. There's little doubt that the D60 will be discontinued by the time they fill all orders, but it won't happen in "a few months."

Canon is discontinuing the D60 because it is too popular. Thet just can't make enough of them, so they're giving up!

The issues with the first post isn't that a new camera is coming out, I'm sure one is, it's that the D60 was discontinued. Why would canon do that? Anyone who has any real businesss expereince knows that's just plain dumb. If anything, they would hold a D60 replacment until al the back orders were filled. Geez.
