…but – why not: so going to NY in December (yes – with my wife; some Xmas shopping). Witch lens would you recommend on a 5D MK II?

Depends on what you shoot...

50mm f/1.2L, 16-35 f/2.8L II, 24-105 f/4L IS, and 70-200 f/2.8L IS are popular choices among wedding photographers. So are the 35mm f/1.4L, 85mm f/1.2L II, and 135mm f/2L.

The tilt shift lenses are popular among landscape and city photographers.

Telephoto lenses (300mm f/2.8L IS, 500mm f/4L IS, etc) are popular among bird photographers (althought the 7D seems like a better camera now for birders with the 1.6x crop and new AF system).

And do you see yourself tote many kilos around following wife-shopping-spree?

And does the choice in any way depend on the lenses you already own?

For me, weight and size would be important. I would want tele (long straight streets with colourful traffic and people and lights), so I would bring a 70-200 f4 L USM.

And wide angle, so a 17-40 f4 L USM. And the 35mm f2, simply because it is such a funky little lens and does not weigh much.

Man, don't be offended, but if you ask yourself such a question why don't you just buy a 450D? 5DII are for photo-enthousiasts, pros or semi-pros who know their needs.

But to answer your question (because I'm a nice people :) ):
16-35
24-70
70-200

or

24LII
35L
50L
85L
135L
300L
400L
500L

100mm macro L
65 MP-E
17TS-E
24TS-E
45TS-E
90TS-E

Actually this is why I ask - because I tend to take to many "kilos" (lenses) with me.

Of course also.

Ok - yes; 70-200 f4 L

Well - haveing the 16-35 f2.8 L II and the 35 f1.4 L... but here are the "kilos" again :-(.

OK.

Now seriously, if you try to avoid too many kilos, get the 24-70 + 70-200 (f/4IS for example) combo.

Now, I own 16-35 (V1) - 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8IS. These lenses are heavy and talking about optical quality are good but as good as L prime lenses.

I'll be heading to Japan in a couple of weeks and I think I'll take 24LII - 50 f/1.4 and 85L. I guess that's all I need.

Only one lens: 24-105L
Two lenses add: 17-40L or 16-35L
Three lenses add: 100-400L
Four lenses add: 100 macro
Five lenses add: 100-400L
Six lenses: add a sherpa!

I would take one of the 24 zooms, I happen to have the 24-70. If taking 2 lenses I would take a tele zoom. I was there a year ago with a 30D. Took the 10-22, 17-85 and 70-300. Used the 17-85 the most and the 70-300 quite a bit. I like WA but hardly used the 10-22. Part of the reason was it was not a photo trip and following the wife all over the city was not compatible with a lot of lens changing. Some shots here:

...just looked at Mitches (masak) NY pictures - and yes: I'll need wide.

So - I think the 24-105L, 16-35L will come with me and I'll keep the 15 Fisheye, 35L and 70-200 f4 L in the hotel and take it with me if I have something "special" in mind...

i've asked this question over the years a few times too...

and i think the very 1st trip i had an opportunity to take photos was in Vietnam. all i had was a 10D 17-40, and a 85mm 1.8... really good combo for me at the time. just simple....
but i think i've come some way since then.
I've traveled with all sorts of equipment heavy and light.
i'm off to india soon,
i'm taking a 5dII like you.
also 24mm MKII 50 1.2 and a 135f2. that's it!

i have a 85L but i believe it's not a great travel lens as it's heavy and slow to focus, the 135 does a much better job when you have to act fast.

if i was you i'd go primes.. i've taken zooms before and i just end up using the primes most of the time. so i no longer take even one zoom with me anymore.

good luck!

To lighten the mood, I thought witches use mirrors and not lenses

I just did a 9 day trip to NYC. My most used lens on my 40D was my 17-55 IS. 2nd most used lens was my 10-22. My 70-200/4L IS came in a distance 3rd. That was because I was with a friend who never been to NYC and we had to do a lot of walking around, and visit lots of museums. Struggled with available light a lot. Didn't find too many occasions to take long distance telephoto shots on this trip (e.g., people in parks, on a boat to/from Statue of Liberty; top of Empire State Building).

On a 5D II, definitely bring a 24-105; best walk around snap shot lens and you'll do a lot of walking. I wonder if the weather would cooperate for outdoor shots using longer telephoto. Figure out if you want to bring fast glass for indoor or night time shots. If the later, consider if bringing a monopod or tripod makes sense (e.g., Time Square at night).

Given the amount of walking and train riding I did on my last trip, I very much rather go with a lighter bag.

I'll throw my thought process in.

are you taking photos at night? bring a prime or 2.8 zoom.

Are you going to want to not worry about your camera? 2 lenses at most.

don't bother taking photos you could just download. there is not point in shooting ground zero, the skyline, lower Manhattan from the Empire State Building.

I would personally bring the 17-40 and the 200f/2.8 because the 17-40 catches things that are happening right there, and includes the context, and the 200 is enough reach to catch people doing weird things without looking like a jerk.

You're taking vacation shots. Worked for me on recent trip to Tokyo.

I take street shots of NYC constantly. I have yet to find a lens that will not get the job done, prime or zoom. But following the wife, don't even think about changing lenses.

Whatever you take will not be a mistake. But the 24-105 gives the most flexibility.

You can, of course, increase your effective focal range by panoramas and cropping on that excellent sensor.
