How can I connect a NON Sony flash on a 707?

Hi guys, my dentist wants to get a 707 but he wants to use an external flash or rather, a ringlight/flash that he attaches to the lens.

I assume that you can probably get someone smart to use a Sony flash connector and kind of hook it up to the cables of the other flash.

Is that possible, has anyone done it and would anyone here be able to do it if he paid him?

Thanks a lot

George

The peanut slave triggers my ring flash. It does wonders. Look at my complete macro gallery if you want. Many Grasshoppers were done with it ...

The Sony flash system uses a serial connection and transmits information using the LANC code between the two devices. So rather than getting a flash contact closure in the camera that causes the flash to trigger, you get a data message from the camera telling it at what level to set the flash, how far away the focus is and when set, trigger the flash internally within the F1000 itself. Of course this happens very fast.

So as the other message says, it isn't that simple. The slave flash route is the best. The Sony CD400 has a traditional hot shoe and the new 717 also appears to offer this feature.

TDZ,

Like Don said, have your friend wait for the 717, or use a slave. DigiSlave has a slave ring-flash that'll work with the 707. I think it's $250 though :-( http://www.srelectronics.com/

Ok, I know about slaves but how do you trigger the slave? With the Sony flash and if so, how do you avoid the Sony built in flash spoiling the photos because of too much light?

Thanks

George

So, how long away is the 717 and how certain are you guys about it?

The ring flash with slave sounds good. After all, the guy's a dentist and my last visit paid for that flash :)

Thanks guys

George

You just block the 707 internal flash enough so it doesn affect the subject and it transmits enough light to the slave unit ... Velcro works ...

This link ( http://www.promaster.com/default.htm ) is another consideration. Though I've seen some discussion/concerns using the remote adaptor and the flash simultaneously, as they both connect to the same accessory port.

Search the "Sony Talk" forum for references on "Promaster", you will find lots of discussion.

I understand that the F707 has a double flash....a pre-flash and the main flash....and that a slave must trigger on the second...........I guess you are saying that the peanut works out the timing ok..............

just wanted to confirm......have you tried it with a Sony F707 ?

thanks...

It works perfectly with both the internal (pre and actual flash) and as well as with the F-1000 (single flash)
