Should I buy an UZI???

By all means, buy one of these cameras! I am a birder, and this camera with the B-300 has been extremely fun and useful! I have owned mine for one year and two months, and I have to say it is fun, reliable and durable too. This camera goes everywhere with me!

Most definately. I just bought one...got it on Clearance at Wal-Mart for $359.00. What a bargin for a camera I would have gladly paid more for. Easy to use but can get creative if you want to.

Love the results. I do have about 3 hot pixels and don't know if it is worth dealing with. But may have them fix it not sure.
When I come to the Olympus forum there are many, many UZI posts and
this seems odd for such an old camera. What is it about this
camera that everybody falls in love with? Is it just plain fun to
use or what?

(Yes, I know that this is kind of a loaded question here, but with
so many fans I'm just trying to figure out what everybody here
loves so much about their 2100's)

And, finally, should I run and pick one up before they disappear?

In the end, it really depends on what you use your camera for.

The UZI is one heck of a camera, very very fun.

The big plus - a 10X stabilized zoom. I don't think you'll see
this on a cheap camera any time in the near future.

The big drawback - "Only" two megapixels.
Regarding number of megapixels, I was eating supper on our porch, and had been told by my wife to read today's Cathy comic strip:

http://www.ucomics.com/cathy/2002/08/28/

Tuesday and Monday were also amusing. Anyway, I mentioned something about the the UZI owners sometimes being defensive about 'only' 2 megapixels when most of the prosumer world has gone to 5 megapixels. My wife said, that she is of the opinion that I don't need another camera, because the pictures I get with the UZI are great (both the online versions, and the 4x6 - 8x10 prints I've made via walmart.com). Honestly, I wasn't fishing for a new camera, I've been having so much fun with the UZI, including all of the mods I've made.

In another thread, somebody asked how many pictures we've taken that was > 4x zoom. I did some calculating and discovered only about 30% of my pictures use the large zoom. The UZI takes great pictures even if the range you are shooting in could be covered by another camera.

You have to decide what you are going to take pictures of. 8 by 10 people pictures? No way! Not enough pixels. Anything outside within 100 yards, It is a deadly camera. 4by 6 prints .is the only drawback to this camera. You be the judge

All taken last week with a c2100uz I picked up last week on ebay.

The closest thing I have tried is the Fuji s602. Its a 3.3mp, 8x
zoom camera. Nice camera but it didn't take as good a picture as
the Olympus. I had to buy an attachement to use filters with this
camera (Olympus lens is threaded for filters) and had to buy
batteries. The fuji did have neat sound effects to make it sound
like a 35mm when you took pictures but, the C2100 is the better
camera.
Hmmm, I thought the s602 was a 6x. If my Oly were smashed and I needed to get a new camera, I suspect the Nikon 5700, Minolta 7i, or the s602 would be on my short list (probably in that order).

Brian,

This spring I naively thought I would spend a few hours on the net researching and then buying my first digital camera. A few hours every day for several months eventually led me to the uzi.

Other camera users write about liking certain cameras and liking certain features. UZI users wrote about loving their camera and loving certain features. Most importantly, they wrote about how much fun the uzi is.

So I bought an uzi and you know what-they were right. It's fun!
Join the fun and get one if you can find one.
Phil

I'm too tired to elaborate. Suffice it to say: "There aint a better deal on the planet with fun per dollar as the requirement IMHO & I'd recommend it to anyone except maybe those who are into 'Wide Angle" photogrphy or printing poster sizes larger than 8x10".

Me & My UZI, Strollin Down The Avenue. Me & My UZI, Focusin On Somethin New. To 'UZe' Or Not To 'UZe'? That 'IS' The Question. Ask not what your Uzi can do for you but what you can do for your Uzi c2100uz/e100rs (in that order) & a B-300

... Unfortunatley they were all gone... At least over here...

The ONLY thing I could get hold of, was UZI's "fatter" brother, the Pro90 IS...

They both rest happily on my shelf now... :)

What a great couple!!!

UZI is the sexy Lady, and Pro90 is the Bull!

It gives me the best of both worlds:

Pro90: Slightly more pixels and a great swivel LCD for "truly" candid shots as you "shoot from the hip"...

UZI: THE camera for indoor shooting AS WELL! (better focus ability).

Regardless: They share the same lens... And nutting beats "cubic inches"!! :) I.e: Never settle for less than a 10X IS zoom!

Happy shooting!

Bo

You won't be disappointed with either...I'm not....I loath the day mine cease to function & are unrepairable. I can only hope someone comes up with something better or at least as good. And if something as good or better came out tomorrow, I'd still keep the both of them as back-ups....
Hey, thanks everyone for your great input!

I don't make really big prints and would use it quite a bit for the
for web.

The big zoom + IS looks like it would really open up new
possilibities.

It sounds like fun, too!
Well, if low MP doesn't phase you, you might look into buying an
E100RS. Same lens as the UZI, but only a 1.4MP sensor. On the
other hand, pre-capture and 15FPS make this even more fun than the
UZI (awaiting the crowd to come to my house to stone me to death).
Must...find...money... ;-)
The EZI will set you back more than the UZI.... :(

Aloha,

It's the only camera my wife likes. We took 2 down to Australia. She did use it and took more pictures than ever before.

When CompUSA had it on sale for $350, I bought 2 more. When I finally told her, she said that if I didn't buy at least 1, she'd have to slap me upside the head. Since I bought 2, all is forgiven. She'd expected nothing less.
I still haven't told her about the refurb E-100RS

Ditto for me with the following edits:
1) It was France, not Australia ( http://www.peacham.com/france )
2) I gave the E-100RS to my daughter as a birthday present.

I and a lot of others would dispute not having enough pixels for 8x10. When printed at a commercial printer with a photo process (such as walmart.com), my 8x10's are gorgeous. I can't say what an inkjet would look like (worse presumably). True you don't have much room to crop the picture, but I have always firmly believed that you should crop in the camera and not in post processing (for both film and digital cameras).

I've been getting 8x10s and even A4s (which is a bit bigger) out of my Nikon 950 for years and the UZI is no different - the Key is to get a QUALITY 2Mp camera and the Uzi, C2020 and of course the Nikon 950 are top of the Heap :)

I've made some very nice 8 x 10s. Most people would be pleased if they aren't extremely picky.

Are there any differences in image quality?
How's the noise and sharpness compare?

Honestly, I do love BOTH cameras. BUT, if you have a sunny nice day and take both outside , the ISO 50 and slightly more pixels in the Pro90 wins hands down. Tack sharp and less noise than F707 even...

For someone who makes a living out of this game, the UZI or E100RS
bring back real fun into Photography, a tiny plastic camera with a
10X image stabilized Zoom lens brings a whole new world to me which
would only be available with either TWO of Canons IS lenses (or one
if you use converters on the end) and obviously more bulk..

I've not had so much fun with a camera in ages - Then there is the
E100RS which is EVEN MORE fun with it's 15FPS paparazzi speed and
pre-capture, there is a loss though, the RS is only 1.5Mp and the
images are more "Digital" looking but it sure does suck in more
information than you'd expect from 1.5 measly MP - and BOTH prove
that there is more to life than resolution..

Then there is the B300 - a quality 1.7X Teleconverter which turns
either camera in to a 17X compact Zoom which can be handheld at the
equivalent of 646mm at a measly 125th of a second with ease!.

Believe me, these cameras are fun, cheap (forget the more expensive
turgid slow Canon Pro-90 purrrlease) and best of all, a great
addition to WHATEVER you have from a Webcam to a D60 - there's
always place for an UZI :)

So now you've convinced yourself you want a 10X IS Olympus - which
do you go for? - for a good alround walkabout which is near the
pinnacle of 2Mp quality and even beating some 3.3s, the UZI is the
answer - if you're doing mainly sports, the extra resolution is
best forgone for the speed of the E100RS,....... the UZI is no
slouch for occasional sports and the EZI isn't half bad as a
walkabout either so if you can't get one, the other should do
nicely :))))

Hows that ?

All I can add to this thread is that I wouldn't be without my UZI. I can produce sharp 10x 8's with ease, and that is bigf enough for me. The stabilizer is a MUST HAVE as being in my senior years I need it.

Finally, if you will excuse the slight digression. I love the kilt, Adam, and have been trying to name the tartan. Come on, fes up. I almost added 'Was that an UZI in your sporran, or were you just pleased to see us? (Big grin)

LOL!!!!!!!!! Rachael took the pic with the 950 and was messing about so anything was possible, Unfortunately I didn't have the UZI then which was a shame as I was doing a Theatre shoot with the E10 and would have liked some UZI candids (of actors messing up) for my own album ;-)

I've had a blast with mine, I've even been able to sell enough pictures at various sporting events to pay for the camera, printer and accessories. I know that it does not provide the sharpest images compared to like the Canon D60, but for the money it can't be beat. It got me back in the photography game and a little business as well. If you want to see some of the pictures go to http://www.danbrown.photoreflect.com

The feedback I get back from parents is great of the images that they now have of their kids. Hope you can find one.
