Wow... I just found a VERY nice noise reduction plugin for Photoshop that does a downright excellent job. It may have been posted before, but geez... I just have to show off my results!

It lets you get very nitty-gritty with just how far you want to reduce noise to ensure you don't lose much detail. I found this plugin at http://www.theimagefactory.com , and here's the results (100% crops, full size links at the end):

Before "Noise Reduction Pro"

After "Noise Reduction Pro"

And now, the full sizers:

is Neatimage (www.neatimage.com) (IMHO) It has much more control and give sexcellent results! Also, you need to learn how to use it correctly, so you have to play around with it a little.

IMHO Fred Miranda's standard PS NR action - isoX V.2 - (in level 2) does a better job and is far cheaper.

And it was way too aggressive as well... Way too much work compared to just dialing in the amount of reduction you want in the channels you want.

No it won't, unless you allow it to use full 100% effect. I have settled for 30-40%.
Neatimage stinks. It's FAR too time consuming a process, and I
found the results to always be worse than anticipated. It's just
way too aggressive about NR, and nearly always takes out details.

I used isoX on your pic (in level2) and it produced a cleaner image with more detail than your filtered one. It will be more aggressive in higher levels, but level 2 is just right for this image. Your filtered image loses too much detail.

ARF in YarcPlus can also add its capabilities in combination with the tools mentioned in this post...

but...that is not my main point.....

There are many tools that can accomplish similar tasks. As witnessed here, what works well for one person, does not for another. So my suggestion is to discuss the available tools, and the virtues, and some examples, and not try to determine a "winner". Each of us works differently, and sees the results in a different light. One person's smoothness, is loss of detail to another.

Let's share the information of the great tools and techniques that we all use and allow each of us to use those which work best for us. And what is "best" on one image, may not be the "best" on another.

Just my 2 cents...

Michael,

Your ARF is amazing. I have a couple of 8x10's shot at 1000 and 800 that look just fine using just ARF in auto mode. I can't help thinking of Orphan Annie everytime I see ARF. That is what her dog always said in the old comic strip.

On adifferant note I have to agree what floats one persons boat might not float another. All I want is a pleasing image that does not look too digitallly enahanced.

Thanks for a great product.

Hi Karl,

I've been playing around with NeatImage for the past few weeks, and I've actually been pretty impressed. It has taken some time to learn how to fine-tune the settings (including the sharpening setting) to achieve a good balance between eliminating noise and maintaining detail.

So far, I like it better than Fred's ISO-R which I've been using in the past.

The time issue is substantial, though. I have a 2.2 GHz Pent 4 with 1024 mb RAM and it must take at least 60 seconds to process a single image. Way too slow for routine use.

One option is a batch process, where you define the settings, and let it process a number of images (overnight, perhaps). But I haven't played with this at all, and am concerned about a "one size fits all" approach.

At this point, I'll probably use NeatImage for individual images that I'm planning on printing large, where I don't mind taking some time to get the most out of the image.

All the best,

Don

Neat Image takes a lot of work to get the best out of and it does a damn good job - Believe me when you've got an E10, you learn how to drive Neat image!

I haven't spent much time with NeatImage yet. I find it quite complex with all those sliders. The number of potential settings probably numbers in the billions. I prefer tools that make my life easier, not more difficult.

I normally use Fred Miranda's Canon D60 ISOR PRO (Next generation Noise reduction) actions and like them a lot. By the way, the EXIF data from your file says that the picture was taken at ISO 800, not 1000. Here's what your picture looks like after using the ISO 1000 action (normal setting):
