Pronunciation of "Nikon" around the world

How do you pronounce the word "Nikon"? Is it:
  • Nee-kon, or
  • Nigh-kon
Please also indicate your country of origin.

For what it's worth, in Japan they call it Nee-kon. In the United States, the television advertisements call it Nigh-kon. I don't know how it is in other parts of the world. I always assumed that the Japanese were just too damn polite to correct their American customers from butchering the pronunciation. :)
 
Here in Texas, we say nahk-own. Since Texas is the center of the known universe, and if ain't known it don't matter, then nahk-own is the pronounciation that matters.

OK, not so purely a hobby.
 
I live in South Africa but came from the UK many years ago and I have only known it as Nickon rhyming with Mick!
 
In Portugal it would be "Knee Cone"

A=Ah
E=Eh
I=Ee
O=Oh
U=Oo

Helder (H is silent)

But not where I live in San Diego. Here we pronounce the H. Also, here both E's are pronounced differently. Oh, well.

p.s. it seems Nikon hasn't cared to correct the pronounciation. They authorize the spoken ads, do they not?
 
Definitely ' Nick On '.

But, you should really be asking yourself how you would pronounce the name ' Nippon Kogaku ', as the Nikon name, as a company, is a derivative of this.

I think I'm making sense. =)

The correct pronunciation is nee-kon -- just the same way we Brits (who invented the English language) pronounce the word divorce as dee-vorce instead of the American digh-vorce. Also: lieutenant -- UK says leftenant, US says lootenant.

The North American continent has a lot to answer for messing up the English language -- I mean, across the pond, you have problems with spelling too -- colour and color?

It comes out Can + in, spelled Canon.

In Australia it is pronounced Nickon.

It's looking like it's pronounced Nee-kon in just about everywhere in the world except the USA. And Cananda. But them Canadians would probably follow yanks off a cliff too... as they are wont to do.

However, I don't know of any American that pronounces divorce as digh-vorce. Sounds odd to me.
 
ニコン = nikon is pronounce as Nee-Kon

It is like IKEA furniture. Correct pronunciation is ee-KEA, not i-KEA as pronounce in the States

agreed. the people in the states try to pronounce non-english words like english. nikon should retain its "nee-kon" pronounciation, and canon should be pronounced "can-nOn," not "can-nan." nevertheless, i refuse to pronounce them the "right" way since they sounds silly in english.
 
In Australia we pronounce it Eek-Spen-Seeve.

Distributors here get one hell of a kickback. Best price I could get for an SB-900 was AUD825 which is about US680 at current exchange rate. (I'm seeing USD prices of around $500 give or take $30 on Amazon).

Highest prices I saw were around AUD1100.

I could get cheaper if I was willing to deal with grey market and dubious retailers. This was a gift so that wasn't a good option.

Well we here in New Zealand tend to say "Nigh Con" even though we know its meant to be Nee Con.

We also say Su-baa-ru instead of Soo- ba- rooo

We pronounce it Nee-Kon in Hong Kong, maybe it is closer to Japan so we have learned the Japanese pronounciation? We have more or less the British version of English so we should have pronounced it Nick-Kon but nobody does that...

...people would not understand me in San Francisco when I say either Nee-Kon or Nick-Kon.

It turns out that many ppl's first language over here is not English so it is not quite my fault that they do not understand me :P...
