While everybody is talking about D60, is D30 still a good camera?

I don't print out large photos and 3MP is definitely enough for me.

Any concerns with D30? Any serious problems that must make me consider D60?

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I picked up a used d30, a Canon 28-135 IS, and a 160mb CF card for $1700. WHile there may be better prices out there this is what I decided on. I just could not stretch my budget to get the new d60. I agree with you in that 3mp is plenty, at least for me. I have only had the camera a week but love it.

Remember, when the d30 came out it was the cat's meow. Now that the d60 is out the d30 has taken a back seat and labeled as old technology.

Sure, if I had the extra $$ I would probably have bought the d60. Fact is I did not have the extra $$ and am extremely pleased with my purchase of the d30.

Some will surely recommend you save your pennies and get a d60 but I see nothing wrong with the d30.

The D30 is an excellent camera!!!

Stick around and read the postings here .. You will see some photo's from folks who have them.
Some of these photo's are stunning!!

I'd say the D30 is worth around $1200 right now.
I'd also say the D30 is much better than the $1500 G2.

Thanks all. Rick or Murphy, any sample photos you posted up (not post processed ones)?

I was thinking of the Oly E20 .

I dont own either. I have a D60 but did extensive investigation into a bunch of different cameras before choosing the D60. And of course, I read about 80% of the postings in this forum.

My point I was trying to make was that the cheaper D30 is actualy a much better camera than a more expensive consumer model.

I hope the person who is considering the purchase of a D30 will read a little more about the following issues:

1. The camera is only part of the price if you buy a DSLR with interchangable lenses.

2. Why it is that a lower megapixel camera such as a D30 will take a better picture than the higher priced consumer level cams.
3. The amount of extra baggage that goes along with a DSLR outfit.

Im just a newbie myself and I can tell the original poster that if he just reads for a week or two every day, he will save himself alot of hassle before he dishes out his money.

The D30 is STILL an awesome camera. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

You should be able to find a used one for less than $1400...and you can get a refurb with a 60 day warranty from onecall.com for $1487

I had the D30 for about 4 months...and an unexpected D60 became available so I jumped on it and sold the D30.

Having used both...the two cameras are very similar. The biggest advantage the D60 offers is it gives much more latitude in cropping. Other than that, the image quality is very similar. I just printed two images @ 8x10 the other day, one from each camera...and they were impossible to tell which one was from which camera.

If you can get a fair price for a D30...go for it!....its still better than any consumer grade camera out there!

Here are some sample photos from my D30:

http://public.fotki.com/abiggs/africa_safari/

All taken with the D30. Most animal shots were taken with the 100-400L lens, and others with either the 16-35 or 28-70. All shot in RAW format, and converted to .jpg with saturation set to 'high'.

hope this helps.

I love my D30, and the D60 will come to me at some point, when I recover from my recent trip to Africa. But the D30 could serve me very well for some time to come.

I bought a refurbed D30 about six months ago and paid more than today's going rate. Don't regret it at all. This is still one fine camera and I expect to keep it for years.

Given all the hassles everyone is going through just trying to find/buy a D60, I am very fortunate and you would be too.

Get one and use it to the max, you'll never look back........except to say"Why didn't I do this sooner?" That's what I keep on feeling.

Certainly nothing wrong with mine. I get super sharp 16x12" prints from mine on Large fine jpegs. It depends on your photographic technique as well as the camera's ability. I've heard people say on this forum that these cameras give very soft images. Well they will if you don;t hold the camera still.

If there had been a bigger price difference between then I'd have a D30 now!- I wanted a 12 month warranty and that meant new (I've seen Refurb Pro-90s but not D30s) and the price diff was only £400, If Jessops had a secondhand 30 (they always warranty S/H stuff for 12 months) for a grand i'd have bitten their hand off

Remember that the D30 may only be 3Mp but those ultra smooooth 3Mp are worth a lot more than 5 noisy Prosumer Mp and depending on where you get it (not in the UK especially) that D30 shouldn't be a lot more money than a Nikon 5700 and THAT is a no-brainer especially with all the secondhand glass on E-Bay

If you can't stretch to a 60 go for it..

Notice the responses?

Clearly you can see the praise lavished on the D30 is no less just cos the D60 is here to claim higher ground.

However, dont think the upgrades of the D60 are limited to Megapixels...

The D60 has a widely advertised 'lower shutter lag', faster/bigger write buffer, even better noise reduction (and mysteriously ISO 1000 not 1600), better AF in poor lighting and thats pretty much it.

Canon themselves are marketing the D60 as 'The camera that we built after we listened to the requests and comments of D30 owners' (Aside: do you think they wasted their money bothering to market it at all? It seems they really didn't need to bother, its a beast to get a hold of as it is!)

I have used D30s, and have a D60, and I KNOW they are different, but other than the minor tweaks here and there, the only MAJOR difference is the sensor resolution. I may get bashed for saying it, but the remaining 'extra features' ar actually predominantly REQUIRED by that increase in sensor data. Think about it, a buffer thats perhaps twice the speed (for twice as much data!), lower noise (its got the same sized sensor with more (hence smaller) pixels on it - so it NEEDS better noise reduction). Better AF abilities (they leave a lot to be desired as one can tell on AF discussions).

Basically, the only thing is... even though 3MP might be 'enough' for you, its true the D60 allows more creative and selective cropping - which is a TOTAL bonus and a half. As already shown on this thread, people have gotten hold of LOVELY lenses with a D30 for incredibly prices, all I can say to the guy who got that IS lens and D30 bundle for under $1800 is well done! However, make sure you shop around, there are LOADS of D60s out there (SURE there are! They are just owned by people who don't want to part with them :D ) and this means, LOTS of upgrades and lots of D30s at a loose end - the market will bear no extravagant prices here.

I must say finally, that I am totally in love with my D60, I wouldn't want a D30, mainly because I want to crop, cut and enlarge, but I know that when Canon made the D30 they did it RIGHT. There was hardly anything TO upgrade, they have made a super job of it though, and its worth the difference in price if you will take advantage of the benefits, but take joy! That D30 is a billion super photos waiting to happen in your life :D

Get the D30 and some sharp glass. You wont see the need for any more, I promise!!

Thank you all for your comments, really useful :)

I am currently left with two budget lines:

1) DLSR - D30

or scale right down to

2) Prosumer - Sony F707 (or if Canon gets a PRO IS 90 upgrade soon).

Get the D30 and start building lens collection and other equipment.

I was in the same situation as you: thinking to by a D30 or sony. I bought the D30 mainly because now I can by other equipment (lenses, flash, good tripod, bag ect) that I can use with canons upcoming models. Now I can alwas sell my second hand D30 will not loose too much money and only have to by a new dslr. With sony you would have to start building your equipment collection from zero.

Four weeks ago me and my girlfried were shooting at a Finnish techno festival Koneisto. I had a D30 and she had a sony f707. After the weekend we had about 250 "good" picures and only 20-30 where taken with sony.

You will not regret if you choose D30. It is a fantastic camera.

hi ignay!

the D30 is such a great camera! i won the G2 before it and the G2 is a great point and shot camera with a very short focal length (35-105)

the greates thing about the D30 is that the images are in lower ISO near noisefree und the possibility to use other lenses and it dont has to be an Canon EF 100-400 for over 1000$ take a look at my gallery
http://www.jsfotografie.de all images taken with a Soligor 100-400 for just 120$

hope you like it
