Black Rapid destroys my D700 and 80-200m

After searching the internet, My Black Rapid straps are going to be retired. Sometimes simple is better. Back to the upstraps!

;) Fran
My connector that failed was the original, simple clip... it was not this one, which I believe is the new model.

I'm torn myself. I really want just the holster because I know I won't wear that vest, especially when it's hot.

Glad I found this thread.

I have one of these straps & have always felt a tad "unsure" of it. From what I'm reading in this thread you may well have so way of demanding (through a lawyer) compensation from them.

Good luck

Lil :)

William:

I was one of the folks questioning why no insurance which may have come across a bit negative.

I have been following this thread because I am interested in the R-Strap for lugging around 2 cameras in the field.

I visited your site and wanted to comment on how impressive your work is. I first became interested in photography to do family portraitures and have since ventured into many other formats of photography but my main interest keeps coming back to portraiture work.

You have a keen eye and a great talent and I just wanted to pass along some positive comments too.

Some really nice and well composed shots in there. Excellent eye. Sorry about your loss- seems you have gone through a lot, the past few months. Hopefully things get sorted out for you and you can get back to what you do best!

Cheers,

As far as photos, I have one camera and one lens, so I cannot shoot any images at this time, as I am also performing on the road. The lens is REALLY busted up... entire end is crushed in a half an inch, 2 chips in the front element, and the filter cannot be unscrewed out as its twisted and then jammed thru the len bodies own threading all the way to the barrel. The camera is not too bad... just very badly scratched and dinged up cosmetically... and since it's the third use of the body and grip, it's sickening to see it so bad... will certainly lose much of it's resale now due to these dings, scratches and dents. I paid with a debit card, so I don't know if that matters or not. I did not get insurance as I have been struggling to get my car insured, as well as pay my father's personal bills as he has not worked for 3 months due to the construction decline, and being he is 71, he cannot find another employer... so I have been covering him. As for homeowners insurance.. do not own a home, as I am usually on the road with theatres, and they provide my housing for each contract.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully, I can at least get a new lens or get this one repaired enough to use till I start making more income.

All this damage from a three-foot fall? My D200, MBD200 grip, and 70-200 VR fell of the tripod a year ago (five feet) and all that was damaged was the lens hood and grip. Sorry to hear you had the lens destroyed by a short fall.

Yes i think they should offer the holster as a seperate item.

I think it was the way it hit... I had the battery grip attached to the D700, filled with AA batteries, with the 80-200... and they said the camera went straight down, and the lens cap hit the asphalt almost straight on... so all that weight was behind it driving it in... the end is crunched in, almost like a beer can.

They should have changed the color of the connector or something to identify it as new. The only thing they did was send it with a piece of tape on it, which is not great but better than nothing I suppose.

I looked at your site, and I have to say that the stuff you have in there is of high enough quality that you should be able to pay a new lens. It is obvious that you have talent and that in time you can choose what ever gear you need for your work.

I am sad to hear about your loss, but you should be happy that it is only a camera/lens, not one of the more precious ones that can not be replaced (fiancé or kids). It is still just gear. And it is unlikely that you will make the same mistake twice, so you are in a way safer now than before...

Not having insurance for camera gear can be also reasonable, depends how much it costs there. At least here where I live (northern Europe), the insurances for gear are so expensive that the use has to be really heavily to make the insurance useful. Once asked the cost of insurance for 3 week holiday in Spain, and the cost would have been about 15% of the cost of the gear for just 3 weeks. IMO that is insane. 10% sounds about right cost for one years insurance, not 5% per week.

It sounds like you should forget about repairing the 80-200 (condition sounds non repairable), just get a clean used one from eBay (not shipped but collect and test to avoid any further tragedy). I hope you get it worked out.

That is great customer service... and they did it without hassle.

Thanks to this forum for pointing out the problem, but they seem to really stand behind their product!

Picture of tether from post above:
That tether concept is good insurance and good peace of mind. I would actually probably go one step further and make it a single piece of line, whereas your tether clips in the centre (possible failure point but unlikely both the tether and strap would fail at same time).

I count 4 possible failure points on the BlackRapid strap between the camera and where that tether joins the BlackRapid strap.

Two by user error:
1. not closing the positive lock on the ConnectR-2

2. not fully screwing in the FastenR-2 to the camera and it slowly unscrews in the field

Two by product failure:
1. ConnectR-2 swivel breaking

2. FastenR-2 D-Ring breaking -- the D-Ring moves fully in either direction, right?

And I bet that those points account for 95% of where their strap has failed and caused a camera to come crashing down.

Two questions:

1) Does the FastenR-2 D-Ring fold down in either direction, allowing you to leave it on the camera and set the camera on its base without disconnecting the strap?

2) Is the ConnectR-2 swivel fix the fact they glued it? Was this a temporary fix or their current solution?

I must say, everything I've heard about this company in terms of their integrity, I like. They own up to problems with their products publicly and roll out fixes openly. Most companies would just sneak out a fix without explanation. Sure, their CS response times seem to be need some more resources, but this happens with new companies who are succeeding.

Sounds like BlackRapid needs to add the new "BlackRapid safety tether" to their strap? For peace of mind. Any BlackRapid staff still reading this thread? What do you or others think?

I go make a latte and a bag of microwave popcorn, with supplemental butter, and sit down to read a good ol' Internet blowup. I saw a bunch of replies to this and they are all gone now.

I tried using the tripod mount screw method and feared I had maybe even overtightened the screw. Yet after only an hour of use the camera came free in my hand (fortunately not falling to the ground).

I'd say relying on a friction screw without a locknut or other positive connection qualifies as a design flaw.

Yes, it does fold down in either direction, so you can put down the camera with the strap on. Of course the camera will be tilted a bit due to the height of the FastenR-2 but I have not had an issue with this.
