feature request: ignore lists (usernames) for the forums

No, I'm just a family guy.
If you keep leaving her clues, some one connect the dots for her. :'-D
I'm probably another one of your alter egos, like natureman and
Malcolm Practice. Come on, fess up.
Well of course you are, who else but ME could come up with such a
clever plot?
Me
But me is also me, who again just happens to be... Do-OH! You made us give it away!

Once again, I think more folks need to embrace the simplicity of the DPR forum > design. Adding more features is not good. Simpler is better.
A byzantine website design is not a desirable attribute, yet it arises due to the intolerable abuse of the more simply designed website. DPR forums have, over the past several years, turned into, basically, a "fight site," where immature individuals who desperately seek attention from the world at large take up huge amounts of on line real estate. Reading many forum discussions involves overlooking half of the posts, at the least. At this point, almost any solution would be desirable!

isn't that interesting?

Imagine going to a bar and demanding everyone pays attention to what you have to say- however important or not, because you know better than each of them that they better pay attention to you :-)
Apparently, a few folks are really afraid that someone might ignore
them. How terrible that would be.

If one person ignored you, it would not be the end of the world. If
you wanted to click the ignore button on me, I would neither know nor
care.

Andreas Feininger (1906-1999) 'Photographers — idiots, of which there are
so many — say, “Oh, if only I had a Nikon or a Leica, I could make great
photographs.” That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard in my life. It’s
nothing but a matter of seeing, and thinking, and interest. That’s what
makes a good photograph.'

But if you are reasonably smart, you know by then you are being
ignored. Most people wouldn't put you on ignore by accident. This
means at that point if you are trying to write something for someone
who is ignoring you, I think you know what that means...
I just ran into a situation a couple of weeks ago that runs counter
to that.

When I post an answer to a question I may embed one of my pictures as
an example of the point I'm trying to explain, and one of the
pictures that has been posted in multiple posts because it covers
several topics is my 2.5 second handheld shot of a streetfest.

Well, last week I received a complaint about "crossposting the image"
from someone I never (knowingly) talked to in the past that they were
"sick of seeing it".

Now supposed that person instead of telling me just clicked "Ignore"
to ignore ALL of my posts...I wouldn't have known it if they didn't
say something; I didn't think I was doing anything wrong (I still
don't since the times I embedded the image it was always relevant to
the topic).
That's the thing. Someone can let you know- or not right now. And as you say even if they did let you know, then they still have to "stuff it" though they are sick of seeing your image, because according to you it's relevant to the different subjects. So they can just click ignore, not pay attention to your posts while other interested people continue reading your stuff.
Another situation, suppose I had corrected the person (and posted
links to prove they were incorrect) and they clicked ignore just
because they were sulking. Again if they didn't speak up I wouldn't
know.
What makes you think that you have the judgement call, or right to decide for them? Let's say they were sulking- they probably aren't going to speak up anyway.

Now imagine you are in real life and someone is sulking, decides to go home and not go to the same bar you go. What do you do, do you follow them forcefully showing them again and again "your evidence" (and that's assuming that you are after all correct, maybe you even aren't anyway).

What makes you think you have any right whatsoever in forcing anyone to read anything you write? Why so afraid one guy can ignore you by their own free will and choice, for stuff that affects them ?

I don't understand.

I must be missing something here. Who is "forcing" anyone to read anything here?

You can ignore anyone you want on this forum RIGHT NOW, there's no technology needed!

Think about it, if no one responded to you ever again, if all of
your posts and threads garnered absolutely no replies, what would
you do?
in your case, just add another logon name. as has already been mentioned in the past, it is difficult for the moderators to control those who have been banned before and simply create new logon names, like you do.

bans serve a purpose only if the party is willing to change, which clearly you and natureman are not willing to do. on top of that, when banned, you simply go out and create another logon name to rejoin. then the process starts all over again.

lets all just be honest for a second. bans are temporary at best if one knows how to change their own ip address, like numerous people do. the only thing that would work is an ignore list. when someone gets under your skin, you simply click the ignore list on that person and they are dead, gone, history, kaput, etc. if they rejoin and start all over again, you hit the ignore button again.

if this feature was present, i would hit the ignore button on michael j. natureman, and malcolm practice so fast it would make your heads swim, and i have my eyes on another new one now that may just be in that mix of new logons for these guys.

so please, phil and staff, the only option is the ignore button. in my opinion it solves most problems.
This is the risk of relying on ignore lists, that people stop
reporting the real troublemakers.
Folks can still report the troublemaker for the first time, before
they hit the "ignore" button. However, the ignore list is ultimately
effective as well, since troublemakers tend to go away without an
audience.

Also, if reporting troublemakers was truly effective we wouldn't be
having this discussion now.

this place is really turning into a joke, and you guys are happy to ruin it arent you?

to the moderators, if you would clearly check, this guy adverse camber is the previously banned, bobn2, aka b229bn2.

how would a new member know about the joe mama situation and be posting to me already. geeezzzz.

when will it all end.

never.

when i see that the ignore feature has been added, i will return, until then, it is clearly time to leave this circus to the animals. let the chaos begin.

You are a one note looney tune. Get it through your head lady, I am only one person with only one log on name. You are chasing me around because of some delusional fantasy playing in your head!
bans serve a purpose only if the party is willing to change,
Your bans haven't worked on you. You're still stalking.
which
clearly you and natureman are not willing to do. on top of that,
when banned,
I was not banned. You were.
you simply go out and create another logon name to
rejoin. then the process starts all over again.
See "delusional fantasy" above.
lets all just be honest for a second.
Why only a second? Why not be honest about this: If you want to ignore me so badly, WHY DON'T YOU? Don't follow me around, don't read my posts and don't respond to them. I do not initiate posts to you. If you jump into a thread and respond to one of my posts, I'm not going to ignore you - I will respond back. If you want to ignore me, like you say, then just ignore me. Care to try it? It will be some time (if at all) before any "ignore" button is up and running.
bans are temporary at best
As you have twice attested to.
if
one knows how to change their own ip address, like numerous people
do. the only thing that would work is an ignore list.
No, that's not all that would work - you could stop stalking.
when someone
gets under your skin, you simply click the ignore list on that person
and they are dead, gone, history, kaput, etc.
Here's an easier way - STOP LOOKING FOR THEIR POSTS! :-D

A month ago you said I was non-existent to you - I thought GREAT! - but you keep stalking back. Do you want an ignore button because you have no self control? What would keep you from turning the ignore button off and start stalking again?
if they rejoin and
start all over again, you hit the ignore button again.
You don't need an ignore button, you need to turn off your computer.
if this feature was present, i would hit the ignore button on michael
j. natureman, and malcolm practice so fast it would make your heads
swim,
Why don't you ignore all those guys RIGHT NOW?! My head could use a swim.
and i have my eyes on another new one now that may just be in
that mix of new logons for these guys.
OMG!!! She sees FOUR boogeymen now!! :'-D
so please, phil and staff, the only option is the ignore button. in
my opinion it solves most problems.
It won't solve your real problems babe.

You can have less trash to wade through. You still see titles that clog the view, that's all. You can certainly ignore, it's even better when you don't have to look at that stuff, computer assisted.

But the reasons you give for NOT doing so are the reason I wrote what I wrote in my reply. You sidestepped those points completely.

Sorry if I missed your other points - I guess I was fixated on the "forcing anyone to read" quote.

I understand most people's reasons for wanting more control and better use of technology. I don't think it is necessary, but that's just my opinion and not being necessary has never stopped progress before. \;-)

DPR could implement a "Most Ignored" list to sit right next to the new Most Active list, a great opportunity for bored measurebaters and forum statisticians. Those with permanent bans could get a red devil icon next to their ID :)
