My son is an avid photographer like his pop...but his lower end digital is lacking...he would like one that has a good zoom and good macro...

Now keep in mind this will be his 6 th birthday present! :-) it will also be his 4th digicam!

Any other suggestions?

I'd give a 6yr old something without a moving lens personally, he may be an avid photographer but at that age, even the most technical of us were clumsy little mites and moving lenses are fragile at the best of times - I'm sure an UZI would take the pace if you can find a secondhand one, they look tough little beggars..

for a 6yr old, why not forgo the Zoom and get him a C1400Z (is that the D600??) a tough camera with SLR viewing which can be had for next to nothing and takes VERY respectable photos -- I had a 50s Brownie Box camera at that age (1970) and went through loads of rolls of 625 B&W film..

Adam...his camera now has a zoom! :-) He needs it to shoot birds with his papa!

Isn't it interesting how you ask a question and get all these posts that don't really answer it?

I have a 700UZ and I really like it. The zoom is great. Though image stabilization would be nice, especially in lower light conditions.

Outdoor shots in sunlight though I get good handhelds.

Mine is a refurb I bought from an online dealer on e-Bay. I've had it for about 5 months and the thing is really nice. No problems at all. We took it on vacation to Georgia and took over 1500 photos in the two weeks we were there.

I like it because I can use P mode or A/S/M if I want to, but my wife, who doesn't care, can put it in Auto and often get better pics than I do.

The ISO setting ranges are nice, 100, 200, 400, 800, and I really like the choice of Auto, Preset, or Manual White Balance.

Given the chance now I would have spent the extra on a c2100 (UZi as everyone calls it on this forum), but I'm certainly happy with my purchase.

I really love the 10x optical and 2.7x digital zoom.

It loks like you made up your mind Before even posting - There is only ONE 10X camera that compact and that IS the C700 - it doesn't really matter whether it's any good or not really as it's the only game in town if you don't want a bigger camera like an UZI, Pro-90, E100RS or CD1000 -

As it happens the C700 is a nice little camera.. Just make sure that he looks after it and maybe even put a tube and filter on it to protect the moving lens :)

Thank you and some great shots on your sites!
That's what i use and I am quite happy with it. The macro is at
2" but if you use closeup filters it will let you focus at 1".

here are my gallery with sample images:

there is enough manual features to keep anyone happy for a long
time and the zoom is great. The camera is small and sturdy enough.

After looking at some very nice pics here and thinking of my present search for a 'carry-able' camera with decent zoom (I've had two Oly before with GREAT satisfaction - there is a C-702 on sale at a well-known online dealer here in UK at a VERY good price (for us anyway!!) - just what is the difference between the C-700 and the C-702 ... is the 702 in fact a LATER version - seem hadly any difference in spec ..3.3Meg+10x zoom etc etc
Would be glad if someone can clarify this please

It's not a 702, it's a 720 (common in the USA and been around for ages, exclusive to Jessops in the UK and newly imported) and there are a few differences..

The 700 is 2Mp with a 10X Zoom, the 720 is 3mp with an 8X zoom -

the 720 loses the settable whitebalance, manual focus and more importantly, the flash slot - the 700 has all this .. Apparently the 720 is less noisy but that is one can of worms I'll leave to the C7x0 gang..

There's rumours about a C730 which looks like it could be a 3.3Mp C700 with all the bugs ironed out.

My apologies - it IS indeed as you say. Now I understand. Must be this unusual (for us) hot spell we're getting at the moment. Well, that writes that one off and saves money anyway !! Thanks again
