Who else has a problem with the new 'active members' list?

and, Brian, I guess you took this as light-hearted as I did,

Best,

Claus.

I think it is a bit silly, and I've seen it cause issues on forums when all it does is display next to your name and give you an increasing status title or something.

I like the karma like systems where those people who answer questions and are helpful get acknowledged for it.

The funniest thing about this thread to me is that Brian Mosley, the number 1 poster on the list has 9 posts on it! :P Not that I have anything again Brian, I respect his opinion and usually enjoy his posts very much. I just thought it was funny :)

Who cares what someones post count is? It is not a measuring contest

I used to be a regular 'poster' on another forum (different subject matter) and they started to do the same thing. While most did not, some either consciously or subconsciously tried pretty hard to boost themselves to the top. It made for a large drop in the quality of postings. I am not saying that is going to happen here, but I really don't understand the added value of the rankings. If it does nothing to improve the quality of the content, than who cares?

...and likely to just cause infighting. I can't imagine that was the
intention. Puzzling.
I think it may cause infighting, but also a lot of bad feeling amongst those whose well intended replies are buried in an avalanche of empty pointless posts.

we may see a decrease in the number of "sock puppet" posts. Also, trolls won't have the time to reply to so many comments.
Now, Ricardo contributes a lot to this forum and I enjoy a lot of his
stuff, but here he's replying to HIMSELF and writing NT (not text) in
the reply. What?
The only time I see him replying to himself in that thread with NT
was " A few more later (n/t)". So not plain NT but informative.

Also those who start a lot of threads, like Ricardo and Brian, will
tend to have significantly higher post counts since they tend to
reply to comments in their threads.

I'm not sure its a bad thing. A little too early to tell.
I scanned that thread very quickly and may have jumped on an example that is not big of an issue.

I haven't read the entire thread...who in their right mind would?

Generally agree. It increases the quantity of posts, not the
quality. But it greatly increases DPReview hit count, and increases
page views, etc. From a marketing standpoint it's a brilliant idea.
Still, can't they collect data on the number of views like other web sites?

I posted in a wristwatch forum recently. I got only a few replies, but many views. It's nice to see there is an interest in the topic even if most viewing don"t have an answer for you and may be seeking an answer themselves.

Chris, I appreciate the words but I am not "trying" to be "at the top
of the list." I am writing what I usually write. As for texts that I
am replying to myself, I believe I only wrote maybe.. um once? As a
further explanation to readers? Do you find me regularly doing that?
I had no problem pointing you out by name since, in the past, I've had good exchanges with you in these forums. On the other hand, within that thread, there are names there that I honestly can"t connect anything with.
Aren't there other examples you could also pick from? You know the
people that really have nothing good to post but poison a thread?
Maybe those who hijack a thread with the excuse of a magnified jpeg?
I"m not sure about about what magnified jpeg incident you're referring to. I don't believe that's me, is it?

It's hard to point things out because there is simply too much sift through. I looked at your thread and just gave up.
I mean, come on :-)
Well, honestly...you do see a sudden spike in activity here? It was busy before but now?
While I would agree with you for the most part in terms of "ratings",
I don't think the flood of messages as you see it is related to the
new system. I think dpreview has a bigger issue than that in the
forums. Pbase has a friend/foe system that I think would work well,
but dpreview must have their reasons.

Anyway, thanks for reading.
No problem

Am I alone in the feeling that this new most active members thing has
caused this forum to get a bit silly?

Seems that posts that would normally not go beyond 30, 40 or even 50
are hitting 150. Case in point:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1022&message=32083719

Now, Ricardo contributes a lot to this forum and I enjoy a lot of his
stuff, but here he's replying to HIMSELF and writing NT (not text) in
the reply. What?
This is below all levels and even worse than trolling. You owe Ricardo an apology for that.
And the scan of the list shows a lot of people who don't contribute
much more than replies that usually don't add much to the
discussion. Quantity over quality.

I think dpreview should count how many views any given post gets
and/or scrap this current system dpreview.
I agree with that but hey, it's Phil's house, remember?

I hope Phil will pitch in with another pep talk... sounds like
they've put a lot of effort into the development, there must be a
strategy there somewhere.
Do they have a way to deal with potential abuse? Or a standard with which to measure by?

Sounds like a good idea. I have the advantage of living in a different time zone so sometimes I pick up info and post it in advanced of others. It would be nice to know it was helpful to more than just a few who had the chance to type a reply to me.

Brian would be great on something like that survivor show. He can play a game without looking like he's competing ;-)
