Used to use them a lot. Always OK. Have since changed to B&H, but price - not service - was the issue for me.

I haven’t purchased from Adorama in a long time but the last time I did (EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM) I was rather annoyed with having to call them about a problem with my order. The problem turned out to be that I hadn’t ordered some overpriced filters and an extended warranty for my lens. After declining the filters and warranty they did ship my lens out right away and I got exactly what I ordered in good condition.

I was annoyed with having to call in to get the sales pitch though so I started ordering from B&H pretty much exclusively since then and have not regretted it one bit.

I had only ordered form them because I has missed B&H's Easter deadline, my order was all Lee filters, $1800 total, one item was a Lee Wide Angle Hood with 105mm Circular Polarizer.
Adorama: $514.95
B7H: $489.95
Why bother when the choice is clear ??

I live near both Adorama and B&H.

In general, i prefer B&H. They're (slightly) "more professional." As well, the B&H 'superstore' is just a magnificent place to shop. But, i have no hesitations about buying new gear from either store. And, shopping online, there's no appreciable difference. I use them both in that way, as well.

I wouldn't buy used gear from Adorama, though. They just don't treat the merchandise very well, nor do they list/describe it accurately.

Bottom line, though — Adorama is fully reputable and professional. You should have no qualms about placing an order there. It's the Brooklyn-based scam shops you need to worry about. Adorama has nothing in common with them.

Same here Greg. I use to order from Adorama as well. Had an unpleasant experience with someone (someone who should know better) there and switched to B&H and not regretted it one bit.

Could I possibly get an order number so I can check to see what happened?

To be honest Jerry, this is a CONSUMER forum and all should post whatever they want without feeling they might be asked questions. Maybe you do want to help but this is why you have a help section on your site and that you can ask these on resellerratings, so maybe you should keep your PR to those places as seeing an active participation from your store can also raise question about the veracity of some borderline overly positive comments about Adorama, and raise the question if they come from genuine people or from someone in house as well.

I'm surprised to read the comments about pushy sales tactics here -- I've never had that experience with Adorama.

Differences in price with B&H are minimal in my experience, and between the two I'd rather use Adorama... B&H refuses to ship to my mailbox service. If I buy a lens from B&H, I have to have it shipped to my house or work address -- much less secure than the mailbox service. The reason they offered is some vague stuff about potential fraud (translation: They don't trust me after they take my payment). No such complication with Adorama.

Neither Adorama nor B&H is my favorite, but both are acceptable in a pinch.

Jeez, Jean-Claude, relax -- The guy's just trying to follow up on a complaint. It's not like he's threatening people or something; it's called responsiveness. B&H has a presence here too, actually a more aggressive presence than this one (and their rep, Henry Posner, has been a welcome addition to DPR). So do a bunch of companies making accessories. So does Canon. There's no rule against corporate folks participating here, and their participation is usually quite positive and helpful.

yeah I know, bit over the top, but they do have other channels to follow up on problems other then here, as for B&H I have not seen them around yet, flak to them too if they are LOL

Didn't read any of the other posts, but I've had excellent results with the following and the approximate % of the way-to-much equipment I've purchased.

B&H- 55%

Adorama- 15%

Cameta Camera (NY)- 15% Good company and cheaper than the above. Don't stock nearly as many items as the above.

Norman's (Michigan)- 15%

Kent

adorama gives a first class service, no questions

the only little thing that can be improved is the recycling of the returns. They do have a liberal return policy but (for example) B&H appears (to me) to pay more attention to don't sell again returned items without checking them first (and check them well).

there are other stores (in the City) with also a liberal return policy where a returned item will not go to the next customer but to the distributor. To be honest and fair.

it all goes back to the distributor's habit to don't seal the packages.

I like the liberal return policies but I also like not to be forced to go back to exchange an item clearly used and not even assembled correctly like two umbrella one white and the other one yellowish with also stains. That's not fun. Also because it will be embarrassing because it may look like I did use it when I did not. And for me it won't be the end of the world because I walk in the store but when a photographer needs to repack everything and ship it back ?

but beside this little issue I'd buy from Adorama again (like I do). I just open and double check everything right after I pay...now that I know :)

Just trying to see where we went wrong....while you may not want to be helped..there's no reason to get testy. A simple thanks, but no thanks would have sufficed. As far as this forum being just for consumers only...I think you might want to read up on that. I'm just here to try to straighten out any problem that may arise and hopefully keep everyone happy.

One day I'll learn how to post photos. I am 62 & technically challenged.

My experience:

courtesy = -10
professionalism = -10
customer service = -10
product delivery = -10
candor regarding availability = 1
candor regarding trade-ins = 0 (N/A)

... for a grand total of -39. Yep, that's about right.
Friends:

I am thinking about purchasing a new Canon super telephoto lens and
am considering B&H Photovideo and Adorama. What has been your
experience dealing with Adorama? Recently, a dpreview member I
respect was very critical of Adorama. What do you think about
purchases of products from Adorama from the standpoints of courtesy,
professionalism, customer service, product delivery, candor of
representations about product availability, candor of representations
about trade-in values/allowances etc?
