Hi,

I have decided to import the NTSC version of this camera but I was wondering if the cameras sold in Hong Kong, being labelled as ZS3, do shoot at 60fps (30 doubled) or at 50fps (25 doubled).

Do any of you know this?

As far as I understand, AVCHD Lite is 25fps (50p) and Motion JPEG is 30fps.
PAL or NTSC is not relevant.
It is not configurable and it should be the same for all models (USA or Europe).

It is only the video play back that let you have the option to output in PAL or NTSC, and once again it is is the same for all models.

Why do you want to import?
Where are you?
Is it not available from your country?
Is it cheaper to import? I very much doubt it.

Given the username, norvegia, it sounds like the OP is in Europe, in which case it would definitely be a hefty saving to buy/import from H.K. or the USA compared to European prices... British prices are even worse.

NTSC versions of this camera record video at 60fps while PAL versions do it at 50fps; there is no option to change that other than the video output.

I live in Spain and yes, I think it's available here already but the reason I want to import the NTSC version is because I want to shot my videos at 60fps (they are smoother than those recorded with the PAL version of the camera).

I suspect the ZS3s sold in Hong Kong are NTSC but I need someone to confirm that before going any further.

It is cheaper in UK (less than 300GBP (lowest around 280) including tax) than Hong Kong (HK$3690 = GBP330 even without tax).

ZS3 sold in Hong Kong does not do 60p in AVCHD. It is 50p (25fps). In fact I still think all the TZ7/ZS3 sold anywhere (even in USA) are the same.

The only reason you want to import is the limitation of 15 minutes per clip video for EU models. But I do ot think that is a big issue.
Otherwise everything is identical for TZ7/ZS3.
Buy from UK if you want good price (then of course you have to pay shipping).

Is it just a guessing or you actually read it somewhere? (any link would be helpful)

Again, the Japanese TZ7 records at 30fps while the European version does it at 25, and this is a fact, so it's not the same everywhere (there have been disscussions about this on this forum).

Thanks.

It is actually in the manual.
It is a universal manual for TZ7/ZS3.

Well, case closed:

And from the German Panasonic website:

Not that I wanted to prove you wrong but sometimes it's not enough to just look at the manual...

I am not saying which is right but something can be wring especially on a web site.
The printed manual supplied with a Hong Kong Zs3 definitely stated 50p (25fps).

You see different things from manufacturers web site from different countries (though something are legitimately different)
I am inclined to believe the manual rather than a web site.

If I were you I would not be so obsessed with 30fps vs 25fps and just get one from where you can get the best deal.

Well, didn't know you were talking, in particular, about a printed manual that came with ZS3 bought in Hong Kong! In that case, I guess I'll have ask the seller before making any purchase.

Thanks anyway!

Panasonic is treading on thin ice by saying these cameras are 50p and 60p. They are in fact recording at 25 FPS and 30 FPS. For the AVC-HD output they double each frame to make the 60 FPS output. This is not true 60 FPS video and it will not give you the smooth motion of either 60 FPS progressive or 60 FPS interlaced for that matter.

If you want 60 FPS HD video the New Sanyo camcorders are just about your only option. Two of their new camcorders shoot 1080p @ 60 FPS progressive and I have personally verified that they are truly 60 FPS progressive.

All that being said, do you really need 60 FPS? It takes a massively powerful computer to play those 1080p @ 60 FPS files.

Which seller do you have in mind since I'm in the same boat as you: wanting to import a NTSC model mainly because of the 15 minute recording limit on EU models.

Yesterday, I brought it in HK during the Computer Festival in Megabox (a little bit cheaper than the market price).

Mine is PAL version with 50fps (shown in the bundled software: PhotoFunStudio 3).

Personal feeling about this DC:
  • Zoom range is amazing.
  • Noice reduction is ok but it seems Canon DC is better (I have Canon DC & DSLR).
  • AVCHD movie is the selling point of this DC and you take moive in outdoor with sufficient light, the effect is wonderful.

Is your PhotoFunStudio English version?

Thanks a lot m8! So Ron got it right after all ;D I should have guessed that, being Hong Kong a PAL country, the camera would be PAL too and, therefore, record at 50fps, but the Hong Kong Panasonic website didn't help either...

I hope Panasonic had labelled this camera properly because, currently, there are too many variables:

The TZ7 can be both PAL and NTSC (Japan -> 60fps / Europe -> 50fps)
The ZS3 can be both PAL and NTSC too! (US -> 60fps / Hong Kong -> 50fps)

Why not just release one model for the PAL countries and another one for the NTSC ones? That would have been more helpful if you ask me...

Right now, I have the following three options in mind:

1st: Pricejapan
2nd: B&H Photo Video
3rd: Adorama

I will not be importing the camera from Hong Kong because I want 60fps.
