Yes, but I never bother looking at it.

By looking through the viewfinder like all good M and R Leica users do. Of course you may have a Panasonic Faux-Leica.

No problem, screen works well.

However more often than not I find myself using the optical viewfinder and leaving the camera at 24mm. (for what it is worth I did not purchase the official viewfinder, but use a Zeiss 21mm which I already had, interestingly the framelines seems to fit nicely with the 16:9 ratio)

Why would I do that? The M's and R's come with viewfinders built in. Only the Faux-Leicas don't (one may have had some sort of built in optical view finder but nothing like the real ones_)

Why would I want a Faux-Leica when I have the real ones?

Don't you know about M-bodies and R-Bodies or even the LTM's?

M3 cutaway body.

Sorry, I do not know how this happened, but my question was a reply to a Leica D-Lux 4 post.

I have a Nikon Coolpix S4 point and shoot that does not have a view finder and on a sunny day you can not see anything on the monitor and was considering a D-Lux 4 and wanted to know if it had a similar problem since it also does not have a built in view finder.

Sorry fior my confusion.

I must really has appeared the idiot.

you have accidently stepped into something (someone) and need but wipe your shoe off and nxt time post what model camera you are using.

Only in the very brightest of sunlight do I have trouble seeing my DL4 screen and I can make due during those times buy shadowing it with my hand.

Welcome to the DPR forums, most are very nice here so ask your questions and everyone will help.

It's really sad to see that some think that owning a Leica
rangefinder gives them the right to be arrogant and unpleasant.

seukel; please disregard those comments; they do not represent the "spirit" and the attitude of Leica RF owners; but only those of very insecure and narrow-minded individuals!

Philip, be assured you don't owe any apology to anyone! This is (in general) a very friendly and helpful forum and you are very welcome!

To have a camera that's small enough to fit in your pocket maybe? I can't think of any other reason for buying a compact that costs more than an entry level Nikon/Canon DSLR kit.

a IIIF or IIIG with the Col Summicron fits very well in one's pocket.

As for a small pocket digital, I much prefer the Ricoh GR-DII with the CV min 28/35 optical view finder, a photographers pocket camers.

I already own a Nikon D70. Nikon D200 and Nikon D700 and several DX and FX lenses. I will sell the D70, D200 and the DX lenses.

I want a small pocket camera and none of the Nikon point and shoot fills the bill for me, that is why I am looking at the D-Lux-4.

It appears to me to be a very capable camera.

The only thing that makes me hesitate is the lack of a built in view finder because of the problems that I have had with Nikon point and shoot that do not have a view finder..

The cost of an attachables view finder at almost one half the price of the camera, to me is a bit steep.

That is one of my few complaints about the DL4, but I do much of my shootiing outdoors in strong light. It is still far and away the best fired camera I've ever owned.

I don't have a viewfinder. I just got back from a trip to the desert in Arizona. It was impossible to use DL4 outdoors. End of story. Sometimes I have trouble with the screen in Southern California, but I usually manage alright. But out there in the full glare of the desert sun, there was nothing I could do except to use my Digilux 3 all the time :-))

I had the DL4 with me in Thailand for a 2-week holiday. I shot it in the brightest of conditions there and didn't run into a situation where I'd miss a shot because of the screen. It actually gains quite nicely in sunlight.

Then there's also the option of later on adding a suitable optical accessory viewfinder. Either invest a ton in the original one or get another kind second hand.. ppl have reported several great vf's that work nicely with dl4 in other threads in this forum.

So either way, you're set. Fex cv viewfinders you can get for around 100 euros of ebay..

Having been a 100% amateur Nikon dslr shooter for some years (shooting only for the benefit of me and friends & family with variable success) I feel the DL4 is the first compact for a long time I actually enjoy using. Especially since I like to shoot wide for most of my stuff, it really hit the nail for me.

I don't know about the others, but I find the user interface of the camera to be very nice as well. It feels very logical and fast to use. Imho it rivals the UI of something like a Nikon D60. On many occasions it's actually faster to use!

Now compared to more professional Nikons like D200 D700 lines, of course not... it doesn't have dedicated buttons for each functions. But it sure competes with the menu based ones neck-to-neck.

If possible, I suggest you pick a sunny day and visit your local camera store. Then try out either the Panny LX-3 or Leica DL4. Either way, the result should be identical and your guestion answered.

Hopefully these help you with your decisions..

Today I finally broke down and ordered the D-Lux-4, the viewfinder, an extra battery and the black leather case.

I did it because of all the good comments about this camera and because of all the excellent fotos I have seen on this forum.

Thank you again for helping me make this decision.
