Now that we know what everyone looks like and how old they are; what do you do for a living or what do you want to do? I'm a network admin for a company that sells industrial bakery equipment in Upstate New York (yes Ginger even they need a network admin!). My husband calls me the lazy photographer because when I first bought my 707 I must of took 50 million pictures of my cats! Personally I'd rather be working at Walmarts than working with computers lol!

Under-employed Oracle DBA/Systems Engineer turned photographer...

I was .COM'd/layed off a little over a year ago, and now I work the occassional Oracle project or fix a down production database, but with the economy how it is, it's not what it used to be.

So I have turned to writing for companies like WROX/Sams and photography.

I must say, I love photography, developed my first photo 11 years ago by myself, and it's a less 'evil' industry to be in than technology. (al la Enron, WCOM, and the .COM cheating and stealing)

As a system engineer, I would only see people cry when they got layed off or their systems were down... now with photography they are tears of joy when I give a mother a great photo of her child.

p.s. I'm sitll looking for Oracle contracts, I used to work there, and am overskilled ;) Let me know.

Hi, I am a Characterization Engineer for ADI in MA, What I want to do is video editing (that is my hobby and like it alot). I like taking pictures for the memories.

When I was working full-time, I did business research for investment banks, consulting firms, law firms and even worked at People Magazine for about three months (worst job ever). I've never been the sterotypical librarian.

Now I'm (finally -- life long dream) a writer -- fiction, short stories mainly. I've been published a few times in literary journals that no one's ever heard of (unless you write short stories) and are impossible to purchase. I still do some library work part-time.

And of course, I take pictures.

Thanks,
Cara

I don't get what's wrong with taking 50 million pictures of the cats, Viv!

In October we're celebrating the second anniversary of the start of our business. I worked from home for a few years for an Internet Marketing company and decided it was something I could do on my own. Long story short, the Internet stuff wasn't working for me so we switched focus to CD duplication services. Business is wonderful -- growing every week and I love working from home. My only complaint is that I don't get out often enough to take pictures -- which is why my gallery has little more than my flowers & cats :)

I'm a graphic artist, and have been one for about 12 years. I do page layout, typesetting, multimedia and slide shows, and (mostly these days) web design. I recently ventured into the world of video editing as well, as have added that to my list of things I can offer. I use both Mac and PC.

I got laid off in October as a result of 9/11. I had worked for that company full-time from home for over 10 years. I've also been freelancing and subcontracting for almost eight years, and since being laid off, that's been my sole source of income. And, one of my biggest freelance clients now is the company I used to work for -- LOL -- go figure.

Digital photography for me is something I love -- a hobby yes, but also something I've added to my graphic artist title. Now I can do photos for use on web, or for use in catalogs. I'm working on a 28 pages catalog right now that will soley use my photography.

I LOVE what I do, and would not want to do anything else. Even if I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd still do graphics.

And, in addition to my graphics career, I also run a large mental health support website, along with my husband. It was featured in Yahoo! two years ago as one of the best sites of it's type. It's not a money maker, it's just an issue my hub and I think is important.

I love reading what people do -- come on all, SHARE

Man, I don't even know where to start with this....

Officially, I'm now a Senior Business Analyst for Minnesota's largest social service agency. A what? Yeah, I know. I work with the different areas of the company as their liason to the IT staff. I have 5 IT people working for me, and it really comes down to a lot of project management and requirements analysis.

But... what I really do, and enjoy doing is design software applications. Mostly from scratch and mostly web-based. At my previous employer, a startup where I was the third employee and watched us grow to 350 in about a year (I was laid off in January, they make Enron look ethical), I was Internet Tech manager and had 6 web developers working for me building all of our internal systems and extranet. We used it for everything... HR, project management, helpdesk, CRM, systems design, etc....

My proudest career achievement is the 3 years with my own company developing a medical practice management system. I sold that in 1997 and is now installed in about 800 clinics nationwide. I stayed with that company for about 6 months during a transition period.

So, my career has taken me through stints in Gunnison, CO (internship), Kansas City, Dallas, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Fargo, and now Minneapolis again - all hotbeds of tourism. lol

I'm usually doing something on the side, or at least planning my next adventure. I don't work well for people, as I get bored easily and like to move fast. So, stay tuned, no telling what I might do next. Could be anything....

And all this technical work with a Healthcare and Business Administration degree from Concordia College, Mhd, MN. Go figure.

Okay, that got long....

Have a great day! Jim

More seriously. I'm an IT guy. Been working in IT for about 8 years after spending 3 years in medicine school/biology in Paris. I have done everything in IT from phone support to IT manager for a well known company in the business. Actually my last job was manager of customer tech-support for a software company but I have been out of work for about 4 months now. Trying to find work in IT even though I have passed the "hate" stage a long time ago, because that's what I know how to do, but I am also working very hard on my photography. I enjoy that immensely and hope to get a job as a photographer one of these days (I don't want to bother with trying to sell my prints).

By the way, if anybody needs a great IT guy, I'll move anywhere if it's pretty, but you need to hurry, the home-theater setup is already all gone and the Macintosh is the next one in the list to go on eBay.

I have been working in hospitality since college - with the exception of a 2-yr stint in an Emergency Room (I was thinking of med school).

But my dream job would be: A federal or state Judge.

So I am planning to get busy - and try to go to Law School -

I haven't posted in a while (been out taking too many pictures) but I am game to chat.

Currently, I am a Marketing Manager for Bellsouth. I work on a product called Complete Choice (for those of you in the southeast). I have been working here for about 8 weeks. Just finished my MBA at The Kenan-Flagler Business School, UNC Chapel Hill. Interned with Cap Gemini Ernst & Young (consulting firm) last summer. Consulting was cool, but not all I thought it would be before I worked in the field. The economy + my change in interest sent back to my original corporate interest - marketing. Before Bschool, worked for Sprint for like 5 years in 6 different cities across the US. Went to Morehouse for undergrad.

I have been shooting pictures for a long long time, but digital really helped me to improve my skills. The immediacy of the process allowed me to get a better understanding of aperture, shutter, and exposure, and now I spend most of my time thinking about subject and composition. Definitely at a proficient amateur level, but determined to become exceptional. I started with the F505, then purchased the F707. I have logged around 6500 pictures on the 707 at this point. I shoot some of everything. Currently thinking of moving to a DSLR, to take advantage of greater shutter and DOF possibilites. Will decide in the coming weeks.

One thing I have found. When you find a picture you want, take the same shot numerous times. After I blow things up on my computer, it's amazing how the last shot that I took is typically the one that best represents my subject. Take it easy....

Im an Engineering Tech. for a Civil Eng. firm in Spring Green Wisconsin. On top of doing that I am also one of the System Administrators for the company. I also have a small computer consulting bussiness in my spare time.

As for the Tech. portion of my job what I actually do is get Data from our surveyers. I get an .ASC file that is formated something like such.

1,10000.0000,10000.0000,789.0000,89 This format is set up as Point number, Easting, Northing, Elevation, Discriptor. I ussally have from 500-1000 pnts to deal with on the small projects I work with on up to a 3 mile long project I had that was in excess of 10000 points. I then have to connect up line work that defines road edges, private entreances, field entrances, etc. then after I get line work fixed up I then create a DTM (digital Terrain Model) this is a modle of what the land looks like which gives us the contours that lay out the area.

From there I lay in an Alignment whitch normaly is right back over the existing Centerline of the road from them I am able to come up with a new profile. From there we will compile a full Plan set of Road and Bridge plans for each project. Most of this is done in EaglePoint/AutoCad.

That sums up what I do in a very short area.

In what ever spare time I have left I love to take pictures with my DA.
I have started doing 3d (stereo views) with my DA with some great results.

I've been a 9th gr. science teacher for about 18 yrs. now. Prior to that I worked as a research analyst for Mn. Dept. of Economic Security.

I used to be interested in photography 20 yrs ago. I had a darkroom, experimented with developing color picts, then interests went dormant till recent changes at school and the purchase of a Sony 707.

Like most public schools funding support has dried up ($1500/yr when I started, $340yr. current budget). Ended up getting a refrigerator from a parent and put in a permit request to sell ice pops. Students run things - we made $850 the first year and average about $2500 profit per yr now. In addition to regular science equipment & expendibles we boughtr a 10ft AV screen, Bose theater surround sound, and an Infocus projector. It gives us cable TV, the web, or powerpoint presentations with huge crystal clear visuals and great sound.

On a side note I had just finished repairing the window curtain so that we could use this system for the first time on 9/11 when a student rushed in just as class began to tell me of the disaster. I turned it on, and in pitch black students were seeing huge orange fireballs exploding and hearing the narration from all around the room. What a traumatic day's intro to the whole system.

I bought the camera to rekindle my interest in photography and keep ahead of most students. I plan to purchase 3-4 digital cameras for class next year. I would like to turn my classroom into an enterprise that learns and makes money at the same time. I dream a lot and do about 1/4 of what I would like to. I've snapped about 4,000 pictures in the last 2 mon.though you'd never know it looking at my gallery. LOL I really appreciate all the contributions and energy found in this group. It's very enjoyable. You folks are great! - Lance (ps - teachers sure talk alot don't they?)

Prior military, USAF. Posted all over the globe including Desert Storm, but most memorable and tragic moment in my military career: Sgt. posted as Entry Control to the Alternate Shuttle Command and Control Facility, Falcon Air Force Station Colorado Springs, CO on January 28, 1986 when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff. One minute the room was abuzz with activity and chatter, then, silence and disbelief. I saw grown men, military men, officers, generals, NASA technicians, myself included, openly weep when we finally realized what was before our eyes on those monitors. I’ll never forget that day as long as I live.

Currently working as senior grower accountant for a produce company…and no, I don’t cook the books…lol.

I was a commercial photographer in Chicago and then an Art Director and TV producer with a Chicago Ad agency.

Now - at 65, it's retirement and doing whatever I want to do, whenever I want to do it.

The hours are wonderful. The pay is not all that hot though. :)
