Is DIGITAL Photograhy Photography?

Sorry I'm so late responding to this...

There was a photo contest (just ended) here on Cape Cod run by the
Cape Cod Times (only daily newspaper on the cape) that was
restricted to 35mm film cameras, and the negatives were required,
with NO computer processing allowed! Don't they think chemical
darkrooms can do exposure adjustments?

I was really ticked...then forgot about it...and now that I'm
thinking about it again, getting ticked again!
Hi Loren, welcome back! We are hearing more and more similar stories. I think you should write them a letter explaining why the type of camera is irrelevant and what they should be concerned about is setting rules for post processing if they are after something close to "out of the camera". Might take a look at this thread too. http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&message=3117691

Cindy,

Around here every year the school teachers are taking pictures of the kids all the time. BUT.. they have to have all of the parents of the students sign waivers for them to use the pictures of the kids they are taking Pictures of. Now you could really be cold Hearted on the battle AX and raise a stink and start askign about waivers and such.... Just a thought. Technicly since the kids are minors with out your approval they can not use or do anything with the pictures they are taking. Not really sure what it was all about but this last year was the 3rd year in a row the teacher asked me to sign a waiver to take pictures of my Son.

I already did some of that with people that asked me about the BOS pic. But mostly I got "how did you make the background b&W?". Or was "that a B&W and you somehow colorized the girl?". I started getting a little defensive I heard that so much. Other than a very slight contrast adjustment, and of course cropping, upsampling and sharpening to get it to 16X20, that pic was right outta the camera! I could tell some didn't bellieve me. Next year they will probably make all kinds of anti manipulation rules based on "that best of show from last year" lol. But I'm starting to think like you - until digital tolerance is the norm in our society - "don't ask - don't tell" . Cindy

Yeah I'm sure you are right, I was wondering about that too . . .but ultimately I need this lady to be my friend. And besides, I hope she gets a good one of my kid! They are having a blast at art camp. Yesterday my daughter and her 2 friends (all swim team athletes) got the pedal powered potters wheel going so fast their clay went flying off across the room! Would of been a great shot for either the FUN or the MOTION challenge! lol. I sure hope she jumped out of the way as she was taking a pic! Hah!

I started to, but then figured they weren't going to change the rules after they'd already been published, so I didn't finish the letter.

What's especially ironic is that their photogs use Nikon D1X's (in addition to film cameras). I was salivating over one of them at the regatta ( http://www.pbase.com/lorenbc/hyc_regatta ) this past weekend.
