Hi everyone!

I have come back from few days from Malaysia...these are some photos taken with the Canon 1DsIII and four great lenses: by beloved Sigma 12-24 ultra wide angle, the versatile Canon 24-105 L IS; the 180 Macro and the 300 2.8 L IS.

A lot of macro and landscapes, and some wildlife.

Comments and questions are welcome!

hi juza ... im from Malaysia and i would like to thank you for showing the world how beautiful our country is .. i know most of the people don't even know where Malaysia is located. :)

That is an excellent shot.

But why did you do a long exposure using ISO 50 on the 1Ds Mark III? The base ISO for that camera is 100. By shooting with expanded ISO 50, your camera is basically overexposing by one stop at ISO 100 (and clipping a lot of highlights)... and then digitally pushing down the brightness during RAW conversion. Essentially, you needlessly clipped off the brightest stop of highlights. Not a good thing, especially for a very challenging scene like that.

Your work is always great. I visit your site often for inspiration.

Do you use a ring flash for your macros?

That 300 f2.8 is some lens! The second monkey picture with 2x converter too!

wow nice! :] i'm going there soon... was the 300 2.8 too heavy to carry around? I kinda want to bring either the 200mm f2 or the 400 mm is do but... i'm not sure if it's worth it to lug it around

Thanks for sharing. I've been to Malaysia several times and it's a nice country. I notice shutter speeds and ISO on the first several shots and it must have been quite dark? 8 seconds for the first image!

Thanks for sharing.

As the previous poster asked, I'm also interested in knowing how you managed to freeze the motion at such low shutterspeeds for the first 2 shots and why?

Thanks for the comment!

I visited Malaysia with my great friend Daniela...we have chosen this country mainly because we were fascinated by the idea of tropical rainforest, and because we hoped to see the rare Malaysian orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus) and leaf insects (Phyllium sp.). We did not found any of these two, but still it has been a great experience! We have seen a great variety of environments: tropical rainforest, mountain "moss-forests", and spectacular islands with a beautiful sea. The forest is for sure the most fascinating environment, but it is far from easy to find animals and to take photos between the abundant vegetation and the high trees. In Taman Negara, for example, we spent an entire day walking in the forest, taking almost no photos. We have seen many spectacular butterflies, but they never stay still enough to be photographed, and often they flew too high and too distant, even for the 300 f/2.8 + 2x. Overall, we have taken much more photos in small grassfields we found along the road than into the forest.

The society of Malaysia has left me a mixed bag of impressions. Most people were kind and friendly; traveling by ourselves has been quite easy and safe. For an European visitor, prices are really cheap - for example unleaded gas costs just 1.8 Ringgit per liter, that is three times cheaper than in Italy. Kuala Lumpur is a modern city and its symbol, the Petronas Towers, are a truly amazing view, in particular at night!

On the other hand, many times we have seen a lot of rubbish along the roads, in the fields, on the beaches...even on some small islands (as Pulau Lang Tengah), sometimes there was a lot of rubbish badly hidden few meters from the beach :-/

ISO 50 gives 1 stop less dynamic range than ISO 100, but it is even cleaner, in terms of noise, so when it is possible I try to use ISO 50.

Nearly all my photos had been taken exclusively in ambient light, I don't even owe a flash. Sometimes I loan flashes from CPS when I need them for particular works, but generally I don't like flash.

If the purpose of your trip is nature photography, I'd go either for the 300 2.8 or 400 f4, the 200 f2 is an awesome lens but it is a bit too short...

We traveled mainly with car so lugging around the lens has not been a problem.

Many bug photos had been taken in early morning, so there was not much light. Some mornings were really still, no wind at all, so I managed to get sharp photos even with very slow shutter speeds.
