Fellow pro photographer challenged me to a contest, my G1 vs Canon 5D 24-105, 70-200, shot jpg, no photoshop, just shoot and upload.

my settings were vibrant and dynamic, max saturation, contrast and sharpening. photos were shot in Jonesborough, TN this afternoon 4:00 until sunset. If I get permission to post his images, I will, The little G1 did more than just stand its ground.

Thanks, Gary

Very nice sets. I think my faves may be in the last set--the closeups of the rails--and perhaps the wide angle sunset/bell tower (or courthouse tower).

I'd be interested in your friend's shots with the 5D--but some of that will depend upon the photographer too smile .

I satisfied myself about using the G1 vs. the 5D. There are times the 5D will just be the best tool, but for many shooting situations the G1 is terrific.

What lens(es)--I checked the EXIF of several but it gave no clue LOL.

Are you using it professionally?? Do you get any flack back about it not being (i.e., looking--'image') professional?? Do you think it will satisfy your needs or are you also using your DSLR with it (think probably Nikon from your older posts)?

I just love mine--I've added Canon FD lenses also (had one) cheaply which are a lot of fun--and look forward to the 20 f/1.7 esp. but probably need an UWA also otherwise I'll be forced to carry 5D with one of my UWA zooms at times. Since I'm not shooting at all commercailly anymore I can do as I wish--and i'm having great fun with the G1. I haven't printed large yet (16 x 24 for me with my own printer) but usually for my own use or even sale, I don't usually print beyond 13 x 19 and it can handle that easily.

Did you customize any settings to get these results. Very nice, we used to go to the Storytelling Convention in Jonesboro every fall but haven't been in a long long time. Do you know if they still have it or not?

In an open contest like that the end result is more dependant on the photographer, thus it's more of a photographer vs. photographer than camer vs. camera contest.

Also the 5D is nearing 5 years technology wise, and that's quite a lot in digital photography.

The thing is, the 5D MkII is basically the same old 5D, tricked out with a bigger but not better sensor and higher ISO (and processing to handle the extra gain noise), and video tacked on.

So, since the MkII isn't such a qualitative leap from the 5D, I think comparing the G1 to the latter is valid.

Yes, I used it at my last wedding as my second camera, next to the Nikon d3, cannot wait until the 7-14 comes out. It will make a smaller combo than the d700 14-24
thanks

yes they still have the storytelling the first weekend in OCT.

Settings dynamic and vibrant sttings and added saturation, contrast and sharpening. Mostly AWB but I did use the preset color settings.

the contest was just for fun, did not shoot the same thing so it does not really prove anything, however I do think it shows the g1 is capable of great results. Being able to preview the image before you trip the shutter is great. swing out monitor allows you to do really cool angles

I heard that a professional photographer was in Singapore and after she the completed her workshop she took the participants for field work. They were shooting with the top gears. She shoot with a P&S and demonstrated to the participants that it is not only the gear but the skills of the photographer.

In good light, the differences will be small. For me, I made some pictures with the 5DII more than a month ago and on the same place a week ago, this time with the G1 and the kit lens. Comparison of the two sets of pictures is unfair, because of the different weather and the price difference, I like to add. But, the G1 pics are good enough and close to the Canon's. There is a difference in colour (weather and time of day are different, and I did not try to make them more look alike) and there is a difference in sharpness, probably more clear in the originals.

http://www.schalken.info/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=1380 is the first of three 5DII pictures,

http://www.schalken.info/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=1353 is the first of the three G1 pictures.

BTW, the G1 are pictures more closeup and I hope to go back there to give the 5DII the same opportunity.

The G1 is certainly capable, where it is capable. This is perhaps the most instructive G1 gallery I have seen.

Obviously, the camera helps determine the eye of the photographer and the choice of shots.

Did your friend shoot more people and things that move? Did he take more shots that depend on subtle details and gradations and finer resolution in Bw? Did he try things with more DR? And obviously, the 5D has so many lenses available at this time that it becomes a very different camera depending on which one is used.

Any thoughts on where you thought your results would have been better with the 5D and with shooting raw?

Obviously the ground shots, and weird angle shots were only possible with the G1. And I bet the lighter weight felt better at the end of the day.

I have found that without cropping the G1 can hold its own against the 5D. If a G1 image needs cropping then it falls behind very quickly depending on the size of the crop.

One of these days I'll set up the tripod and shoot the same scene with both then do a comparison.
