I am very tempted to pre-order this lens. Not many vendors are offering it yet. And, not suprisingly, it is not being discounted (unless you count 5 cents to $1 as a discount). Adorama is offering free shipping, but I would pay sales tax. Anyone find another retailer offering the lens with free shipping?

FYI: Our best price on Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G (Taking Orders) is $189.00 - BelAir Camera.

Don't know what they charge for shipping, but will find out.

From BelAir Camera in Ca., shipping to NJ would be $13 to $15. Going with $15 it would be $204 for the lens delivered. With NJ Tax from Adroma, it would be $214 delivered. BelAir does not seem to have great ratings and I have never bought from them before. I have made several purchases from Adorama. I guess for the $10 difference I will end up ordering from Adorama

I for one can't wait to get my hands on one of these. A fast prime lens with AF on my D40....for $200! This sounds like a perfect travel lens for landscapes and especially indoor museum photography. I can think of many places this would come in very handy, not to mention being a fraction of the weight of the 18-200 VR that's usually on the camera.

"You'll find the lens very soft at 1.8"

How do you know this?
He doesn't ... unless he's being overly critical of the sample images that have already been published online.

In general, however, ALL lenses are their softest wide open at the maximum aperture.

For example, as great as the 35mm f/2 lens is, it's better when stopped down in the f/2.8 to f/4 range. Similarly, I suspect the new 35mm 1.8 will be better when stopped down to f/2 or f/2.8 rather than wide open at f/1.8

Again, that's just the way lenses work.

I'm going to backup what Leung's probable assumption is about the 35mm 1.8 being soft much like the 50 1.8 is @ its maximum aperture. If you crank the 50 1.8 to 4-f8 it is crazy how sharp it gets! Im going to put my money on this other 'budget' lens being in the same caliber that is. This by no way is going to deter me from getting one my 50 1.8 has produced the best images ive taken with my d50 and now d90.
You'll find the lens very soft at 1.8.

The best 35mm ever produced by Nikon was the 35mm f/2.0 D

Look, obviously these cheap 1.8 lenses are soft at their max aperture. His VERY clear implication is that the 35 f/2 is somehow NOT soft at f/2, which is flat-out disconnected from reality.

Aye, didn't Nikon's own MTF charts suggest that the new 35 is sharper than the old? Maybe you can't trust a manufacturers charts in general, but in relative terms they shouldn't lie..

I pre-ordered mine at Amazon on the 11th Feb. $199.95 with free shipping (super saver). It looks like they may have stopped taking pre-orders.

No word on when they estimate shipping yet.

I am thinking that this is the time to support the local camera shop for just a couple of bucks more - assuming they can get it in stock.

Dang! Don't tell me that (they are not taking any more pre-orders). Now i will have to pre-order one.......

Actually I was just taking family and pet pictures with my D90 and the 50mm 1.8 mounted (using the SB-800 aimed at the white ceiling but with a black bounce card I made with white edges - worked great). I continue to feel that the 50mm is the sharpest tool in my shed. But, it is not good indoors (at least in a house). I was continually tripping over things trying to get enough distance.

I really need the 35mm for indoor candid portraits.....

Adorama is still taking preorders (for the same price that Amazon did ... and with free shipping). I guess Amazon received so many preorders for the 35mm that they stopped taking any more.

I hope the 35mm is a huge success. The D40/D40X/D60 market is actually the LARGEST number of Nikon DSLRs that have been purchased (80% of all Nikon DLSR sales). That means there are more D40/D40X/D60 owners looking for AF-S primes then there are all other Nikon DSLR owners COMBINED.

There's a HUGE market for low-cost AF-S (DX) primes ... if Nikon can keep the quality relatively high and the cost relatively low. I suspect the 35mm will be MUCH more popular among D40/D40X/D60 owners because it is so much cheaper than the AF-S 50mm 1.4G.

I don't know about you, but here in Austin, there is a nice camera store called Precision camera.

While I love the store, their prices are just over the roof. I actually wouldn't mind paying sales tax on some of my purchases, but the price difference is just too large.

I think it is great to be able to walk into a camera store and try out the products and buy them there, but for my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for example, my local camera shop was over $100 more expensive (for a $400 lens) compared to online dealers like amazon/adorama/bhphoto. All that and sales tax? I'll pass for now.
