Challenge 22 topic: Fountains !

Galleries have been set up here:
http://pbase.com/stfchallenge/challenge_22_fountains

Eligible must be shot with a Sony digicam during the challenge period:
4:01 a.m. GMT July 27th, 2002 through 11:55 p.m. GMT August 6th, 2002.
New York= 12:01 am Saturday July 27th through 7:55 pm Tuesday August 6th.

If you are reading this, the challenge has begun no matter where you live...and you will have two weekends to obtain images.

You may enter 4 images in each category

You may delete your work if you decide to before the conclusion of the challenge

You should not move your work or anyone else's to another location.

Please put your name in the title of your work to make voting easier.

In the galleries you will find a link to instructions for uploading to pbase.

The challenge is about fountains !

Fountains are everywhere: colleges/universities, downtowns, village centers, shopping malls, near monuments/museums/zoos, garden/landscape centers, aquatic stores, backyards, pools, within gardens, nature centers, retreats, home decor stores, hotel/motel lobbies and entrances, courtyards,etc... I am not interested in imaging people "playing" in fountains, but I am interested in the fountain itself, the essence, if you will, of the fountain. PLEASE, everybody is encouraged to participate and treat this as a photo skills "assignment"...newcomers are welcome. Try a different angle, an unusual composition, different speeds, a closer view or a view farther away, try playing with shadows and the effect light has on water and/or materials. Just experiment, take alot of pictures, have fun doing it, and post your favorite results...we ALL want to see them !

If you have any questions, please respond only in this thread to keep all the info in just this one thread.

If I am not available, I would ask that any other forum member that can honestly help to please do so. Thanks in advance for this.

Is there a way i can remove the original Size Image i uploaded ?
...not that I am aware of.

If you resize images to a size of around 800X600 (or 600X800), pbase will automatically assign that size the "original" size. If you submit a larger sized image than the above measurement, pbase will automatically assign that the "original" size and add 3 more smaller sizes.

The viewing choice is user determined so it isn't really a problem...although, to be a good sport..and to save some room, it's generally a good idea to submit all images at a size around 800X600 .

Hope this helps...others feel free to answer too.

Also, could you please place your images into the "Exhibition" catagory...by the date indicated, your images qualify for posting there instead of the "Eligible" category.

Thank you very much for posting. Any other trouble, please ask...myself or another forum member will help you.

Um, just because they were taken earlier than 27th of July ?

In the challenges, there are two categories as described above in the information section. The "eligible" category always has a defined and limited time period in which you have to take the picture. If it's not within this period, it simply qualifies for the "exhibition" category. I always have to put images in both categories. Your images are viewed, evaluated, and appreciated the same in both categories. The "eligible" category simply helps to decide the next challenge host...and it "forces" people to take images that are a direct and immediate response to each new challenge topic. It helps to put everyone on an equal basis...that is, everyone has the same opportunity to try to take NEW pictures that fit the theme of each challenge, starting immediately after the topic is announced.
I hope this helps you understand how things work.
If anyone else can word this better, feel free to do so.
If you need any more clarification, please ask.

Yes, because that's the central point of the "Challenge", as it has been from the beginning; i.e. to take the topic as virtually a "new" photo assignment, within which everyone is encouraged to go out and exercise their imagination and creativity from square one, and share the resulting learning experience.

It's always been recognised, nonetheless, that eixisting work is often worth airing to share ideas and techniques already put effectively into practice. Hence the Exhibition category.

Not as such. But what I suggest you do is simply remove the existing ones, resample copies of your originals yourself at no more than 800 pixels on the longer side (i.e. anything up to 800 x 800 is fine), save them at a reasonably high JPEG quality setting and upload those copies afresh.

If you put up your new ones first, you can copy and paste the details you've entered from the first lot of images before deletingthem. It's early days yet, and there aren't any comments posted against your images to be lost by removing them.

Tip and request: Put your name below the thumbnail as well -- it makes voting easier for everyone.

does a water feature with a waterfall qualify as a fountain? i
usually think of a fountain as spouting water.
By a fountain, I mean an artificial spring, jet, or flow of water. As long as it is "artificial" (and not natural), a fountain can include a waterfall feature.

I hope this answers your question. If not, just ask again. Looking forward to seeing your entries.

Please look, get inspired, and participate!
Boy , this drought we are having in my area is going to seriously impair my ability to get fountain shots. But I will give it a try :)

Edit the gallery. Check the box to the left of the "edit" command. Below the images there is a button to push to remove the image. There is also another botton you can use to move the image to another gallery. You can use this to move the image to the exhibition gallery if you want to. I've done both - removed photos and moved them to the exhibition gallery. Just be very sure that yours is the only one with a check in the little box so you don't delete or move anybody else's photo. :) Ann

I can't seem to find anything saying how small the file should be
other than a size of 800 X 600 being reccomended. Should it be
under 100k?
Richard,

I think as long as you stick to the pixel size of not greater than about 800x600, your image will upload fine and be presented as the "original" image size that is requested. Usually I always have to resize my images down to this pixel size from a much larger pixel size before I upload it.
If that isn't the answer you were looking for, please ask again.
Mike(MFC)

Richard, you'd only get down to 100kB with very severe JPEG compression -- way too much for acceptable quality in something like a Challenge gallery. File size at a given JPEG quality level varies greatly according to the amount of sharp detail present in an image, but typically you'd want to be using a quality setting of 9 or, preferably, 10 on Photoshop's current scale of 12. For large slabs of constant colour against sharp edges (such as in the Coke Can Challenge a while ago), you may even need to go to 11 to prevent visible artefacts. In Paint Shop Pro 7, a compression factor of between 5 and 1 would be comparable. Expect a file size (at 800 x 600) of anywhere between, say, 200 and 350 kB as a rough guide.

...the artificial spring, jet, or flow of water. A fountain should demonstrate this artificial movement ...or the obvious capability of it.
A few have asked me to clarify things. I will...a little :)

There are many traditional examples-- all shapes, sizes, degrees of complexity, materials made of, and capabilities of water movement.

Many hang on walls, others sit on the ground or flat surface, others are in motion. Most peoples have access to some form of traditional fountain.
If interested, this link discusses some of the history of traditional fountains:
http://www.gardening-uk.com/waterlands/fountains/types.html

Everyone has access to non-traditional fountains. Although this challenge is primarily meant to capture the essence of a traditional fountain, a few just won't have access to them. Keeping the definition in mind, let your imagination help you discover just how many "fountains" you really do have access to.

Hope this helps.
